The 'Community' Season 4 DVD Doesn't Feature Dan Harmon Commentary

Community's fourth season (a.k.a. the Dan Harmon-less season) was released on DVD last month, and the box set didn't feature an audio commentary track from Harmon after all. Harmon, who was fired from the show after the third season and rehired for the fifth, told audiences at his Harmontown podcast in June, "Sony said they’re very interested in recording me watching it as a commentary track … I think I can do anything. It would move Season 4 DVDs, for sure." The DVD set did end up featuring commentary from the cast and writers, just not from Harmon, which can probably be attributed to him feeling [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'The Bitter Buddha' on DVD

Every good stand-up comedian knows that it's both a blessing and a curse to be a "comic's comic." On the one hand, you receive high praise and validation from those "in the know," and your comedy "street cred" is through the roof. On the other hand, it's hard to continue pursuing standup without reaching broader audiences and building a larger fanbase – only the most hardworking, naturally talented comedians (Louis CK, for example) have been able to achieve both. The Bitter Buddha explores the middle age career surge of a true comic's comic, Eddie Peppitone, as he grapples with family struggles, sobriety, and self-doubt. The documentary features interviews with a [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Web Therapy' Season 2

Although the third season of Web Therapy does not begin until July 23rd, the complete second season of the Showtime series came out this week on DVD! Based off the web series of the same name, Web Therapy follows psychotherapist Fiona Wallace, played by series co-creator Lisa Kudrow. The semi-improvised dark comedy consists of Wallace administering her unique brand of three-minute therapy via iChat to various patients, while simultaneously trying to work on her own marriage to husband Kip, played by Victor Garber. The two-disc DVD set is definitely worth purchasing: the line-up of guest stars is outstanding, including such famous [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Save The Date'

Save The Date, a quirky comedy starring Allison Brie and Lizzy Caplan is out on Blu-Ray today. The indie romcom was directed by the relatively obscure Michael Mohan, who has so far been more prolific in short films. It was originally released late last year on Video On Demand (VOD). Save The Date focuses on two sisters, Sarah and Beth (played by Caplan and Brie, respectively), who take completely different approaches to love — Beth loves the notion of a classic romance, wedding cake tasting and all, while Sarah treats commitment like a disease to be avoided at all costs. Together, the two sort through their own relationship problems [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'John Dies at the End'

Starting this week sci-fi horror comedy John Dies at the End is available on DVD and Blu-Ray. The movie, based on Cracked senior editor David Wong's 2007 comic horror novel of the same name and directed by Don Coscarelli, the same guy behind sci-fi horror comedy and semi-comedy movies Bubba Ho-Tep and Phantasm, is about two college dropouts, a psychedelic drug called Soy Sauce, and demons. Paul Giamatti also stars in and produced the movie, which had a lukewarm response from some critics but got a bit of a cult following, too, and also Julie Klausner and Vulture made this video of Giamatti [...]

Finding Long Lost Jack Benny Episodes

The last time on From the Archives that we checked in on Jack Benny, it was towards the end of his career, in 1973. While he was getting on in years, his oft-complimented timing was still just as sharp as it always was, and he still put on a good show. However, judging any comedian's performance at the age of 79 seems a little unfair, unless they're George Burns, so today we're going to examine Jack Benny at his peak, with the help of the new Shout Factory DVD The Jack Benny Show: The Lost Episodes.

I've spoken many times in this column about the various studios [...]

Strolling Through Johnny Carson's Vault via DVD

Usually here at From the Archives, the titular archives refers to the incredibly vast one at the Paley Center, but this week we’re going to be dipping into a different, equally vast archive: Johnny Carson’s. During one of his many contract negotiations with NBC over the years, Johnny negotiated the ownership rights to all of his episodes of The Tonight Show, and all 3,300 hours of this material exists in the Carson Archives, deep in a subterranean salt mine, beneath Hutchinson, Kansas. Of course every episode of Carson’s show isn’t there. The first ten years of Johnny’s career encountered a problem that we’ve seen several times in this column [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Workaholics' Season 3

The slackers of TelAmeriCorp are back with the third season of Workaholics, available on DVD and Blu-Ray this week! Season three of the hit Comedy Central sitcom follows the continued non-adventures of Blake, Adam, and 'Ders as they get a surprise visit from Anders' father, fall in love with a webcam girl, and drop acid for the first time. The special twenty-episode season includes guest appearances from Tim Heidecker, Alex Borstein, Tom Green, Lori-Beth Denberg (!), Robert Englund, Jordan Peele, and Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys. Don't be so butthurt, get weird with Workaholics: Season Three on DVD and Blu-Ray!

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: Pete Holmes's 'Nice Try, The Devil'

Nice Try, The Devil, the new Comedy Central standup special from the You Made it Weird and future TBS late night host (and also voice of that E-Trade baby from commercials) Pete Holmes premiered on Sunday, and now it's available on CD+DVD. The album is Holmes's second, a follow-up to his 2011 debut Impregnated With Wonder, and a lot has happened in Holmes's career since then, mostly the aforementioned You Made it Weird and late night things. Bonus material on the DVD includes two sets from Holmes on John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show and his appearance on Comedy Central Presents. If you are a [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Bachelorette' on DVD

In case you missed it during its short theatrical release and its availability online since then, last year's movie Bachelorette is out today on DVD and Blu-ray! The black comedy, written by Leslye Headland and based on her play of the same name, split critics and audiences fairly evenly, but the movie was produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay and boasts an all-star cast, which includes Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, Adam Scott, Rebel Wilson, Horatio Sans, and James Marsden, so if nothing else all those names of people you like in other things warrant checking it out.

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Mystery Science Theater 3000 XXVVII' on DVD

Comedy nerds and science nerds alike already know about Mystery Science Theater 3000. In case you're not in the know: the Peabody Award-winning satire series ran for a few years on a Minneapolis CW-affiliate before being picked up by Comedy Central in the early 90s and eventually making its way onto SyFy. The cult show followed a man and his robot sidekicks, who are imprisoned on a space station by an evil scientist and forced to watch a selection of bad movies (think The Room) as part of a psychological experiment. To stay sane, the man and his robots provide a running commentary on each film, making fun of its flaws and wisecracking their way [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Daria: The Complete Animated Series'

If you are even vaguely aware of the 90s, you have probably heard of Daria. If not, let me fill you in: Daria Morgendorffer and her dysfunctional family moves from Beavis and Butthead's town of Highland to Lawndale, leaving Daria with just as many idiots but slightly better animation. She's joined on her sardonic journey through high school by the eternally artsy Jane Lane and the whole lot of archetypal high school classmates, from the ditz and the jock to the obnoxious younger sibling. Created by Glenn Eichler (National Lampoon, Beavis and Butthead, The Colbert Report), Daria is a hilarious show that has definitely stood the test of time. If the [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Wilfred' Season 2

The third season of Wilfred premieres this week, but you can start slobbering now because the second season of the dark comedy is available on DVD and Blu-Ray today! A story of man and man's best friend, the FX series follows Ryan Newman, played by Elijah Wood, and his anthropomorphic dog, Wilfred, played by series co-creator Jason Gann, the only actor held-over from the original Australian series. Developed for American television by the original showrunner for Family Guy, David Zuckerman, Wilfred's second season resolves the cliff-hanger finale of season one, and finds Wilfred confronting Ryan with life's most serious questions concerning love, happiness, [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Repo Man' Criterion Collection

Owning a 1980s cult classic comedy sci-fi action movie on DVD can be fun, but owning a copy of that same movie on a Criterion Collection DVD can be even more fun, especially if your idea of fun is having pretty DVD cases lined up on your shelf. This week the Criterion Collection adds the 1984 Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez-starring Repo Man to its catalog, and the sweet new restored version of the movie available on DVD and Blu-Ray comes complete with a lot of extras like interviews and conversations with the director, other filmmakers, and some of the musicians from the soundtrack including Iggy [...]
