'The Simpsons' Are Crossing Over with Basically Every Other Fox Cartoon This Season

Over the course of last year, several big events slated for the 26th season of The Simpsons were revealed including a Futurama crossover episode, a Family Guy crossover episode, and the death of a character who has appeared on the show at least twice. At TCA over the weekend, a few more details were revealed about all three events, including that the Family Guy/Simpsons crossover episode — which will air as Family Guy's season premiere on September 28th — will also cross over into Bob's Burgers territory. From EW:

In addition to featuring Homer, his family, and various Springfield residents, Family Guy will include a [...]

Brian Came Back to Life on 'Family Guy' Last Night

The Brian saga is finally over. After getting hit by a car and killed, probably not being dead, and being rumored to come back on the show, the Griffins' beloved dog made his Family Guy return on last night's episode "Christmas Guy." Thanks to a time machine and some quick thinking by Stewie, Brian's death-by-car was averted just in time for some sentimental Christmas gratitude, and you can watch a clip from the episode here. The time machine was also an easy way to get rid of the Griffins' temporary replacement dog Vinny (voiced by The Sopranos' Tony Sirico), so it looks like we can [...]

'Family Guy' Killed Off Brian Last Night

On last night's episode of Family Guy, the Griffin's dog and smartest member of the family Brian was struck by a car and killed off. Brian, who was voiced by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, died after baby Stewie's time machine had broken, meaning he was unable to go back and save him. But since the world of Family Guy has a very casual relationship with continuity and logic, it's more than possible that his death need not be the end of Brian.

Update: Family Guy's writers made reference to the death at Comic-Con a few months ago, saying that one family member would be killed and replaced by another [...]

A Look Through the Best Emmys Openings and Monologues

When several of the best recent hosts joined Neil Patrick Harris during his monologue last night at the Emmys, it was as a reminder that, despite the usual award show grumblings and random musical performances, the producers of the Primetime Emmys have a pretty good track record. They try new things and let the hosts have fun, and for the most part, their network-influence emcees are appropriate and talented (and when they get it very wrong, they course correct). Here's a look back at some of the best openings and monologues from the ceremony's impressive history:

Seth MacFarlane Turned Down the Chance to Host the Oscars Again

Seth MacFarlane's performance as Oscars host this year drew a mixed response, but the ceremony got big ratings. It was reported last month that he had been asked to return to host the awards in 2014, but MacFarlane revealed today on Twitter that he said no to the opportunity. "Traumatized critics exhale: I'm unable to do the Oscars again. Tried to make it work schedule-wise, but I need sleep," MacFarlane wrote. He added, "However, I highly recommend the job, as [Craig] Zadan and [Neil] Meron are two of the most talented producers in the business. My suggestion for host is Joaquin Phoenix." Don't get your hopes up, [...]

The Hour-Long 'Simpsons'/'Family Guy' Crossover Episode Will Air This September

News broke last summer that Fox was working on a Simpsons/Family Guy crossover episode to be aired sometime in fall 2014. At Fox's upfront presentation yesterday, entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly confirmed the news and revealed that the episode — called The Simpsons Guy — will be a full hour and is currently set to air sometime this September. The episode will feature the Griffins going on a road trip to Springfield; here's the full description of the crossover special via EW:

They cross paths with Homer, who graciously greets his new "albino" visitors, and the two families become fast friends. Stewie is impressed with Bart and [...]

Brian Is Still Alive, or Something, on 'Family Guy'

Surprise! Family Guy didn't actually kill off one of its main, most popular characters a couple of weeks ago. What many people assumed to be a cynical stunt for ratings turns out to be, well, just that, it seems. It's not clear how Brian will be brought back into the show, but he's set to return as soon as the December 15th episode, which has the synopsis "Stewie devises a master plan to get the one and only thing he wants for Christmas." I wonder what Stewie could want?? And it's clear that he'll be back for good, as an episode slated for next fall with guest [...]

Seth MacFarlane Gets Another Animated Show at Fox

Fox has bought another animated comedy from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. TV Guide reports that the network has ordered 13 episodes of show Bordertown produced by MacFarlane and created by Family Guy EP Mark Hentemann. The show will follow Bud Buckwald, a Border Patrol agent in a Texas border town and his next door neighbor, a Mexican immigrant named Ernesto Gonzales. The show will "take a satirical look at America's cultural shifts through the evolving relationships between the two families." The series is expected to debut sometime during the 2014-15 TV season and is the second network comedy ordered for next year already following NBC's Tooken (tentative title), which was co-created by Tina [...]

'The Cleveland Show' Has Been Canceled

After four seasons on the air, Fox has canceled The Cleveland Show, according to animation site Cartoon Brew. Since premiering to strong ratings in the fall of 2009, the Family Guy spin-off has seen its viewership gradually decrease over the last four years (just like TV in general has) and ratings prognosticators have been expecting the cancellation. By the time the current season wraps up, Cleveland Show will have aired 88 episodes, which is an impressive run for a series these days and enough to get it into syndication, with reruns set to debut on TBS and Adult Swim this fall. Co-creator Seth MacFarlane still has [...]

How 'Family Guy' Gets the Comedic Cutaway So Wrong

By now, the cutaway has become a television comedy staple, allowing programs to reveal information, flashback, build on a joke, or direct-address the camera among other options. The cutaway, an abrupt break in continuity editing, (which as mentioned previously here is editing that allows multiple shots to appear as if they are happening continuously on the same spatial and temporal plane) is useful and oft-used in the visual comedy toolkit because it can suddenly subvert the pacing of a scene or add information for a joke or punchline without losing dramatic focus. Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy has positioned itself as the immediate point of reference when discussing the [...]

Brian Griffin's Probably Not Really Dead

On Sunday night's episode of Family Guy, it appeared that the Griffins' dog Brian had bitten the dust after being hit by a car. But unsurprisingly for a show not bound by any laws of nature, it might not be the end of the beloved pet. An animated clock has appeared online, promising a "special announcement" from Brian on Friday, December 6 at 1 PM ET/10 AM PT. There are no clues about Brian's upcoming message, other than a decree to "spread the word" about the announcement.

Some fans of Family Guy were extremely upset by Brian's death; some even started a petition to bring him back that currently [...]

Talking to Alex Borstein About Writing Strong Female Characters and Her New HBO Show 'Getting On'

From Lois Griffin on Family Guy to Miss Swan on MADtv, Alex Borstein has played some memorable TV characters. Though she was always a self-described “smart ass performer” from a young age, she almost nixed a life in show business for a more practical career as a lawyer and later an advertising exec. Now, after her big break on MADtv and years of acting, writing, and producing on all sorts of TV shows and movies, Borstein will be starring in a new HBO series called Getting On, a remake of the hit UK medical comedy of the same name. We caught up with Borstein to discuss the new show, how she helped turn [...]

'The Simpsons' and 'Family Guy' Are Doing a Crossover

Just like when the Jetsons met the Flintstones before them, the Simpsons and the Griffins are set to go face to face next year in a special crossover episode. EW reports that an upcoming episode of Family Guy entitled "The Simpsons Guy" will feature the Griffin family going on a road trip to Springfield. Simpsons voice actors Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, and Hank Azaria are all voicing characters in the Family Guy episode, with Harry Shearer conspicuously absent. Here's how EW describes the crossover:

They cross paths with Homer, who graciously greets his new “albino” visitors, and the two families become fast friends. Stewie is [...]
