Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: The Complete First Season of 'Family Tree' on DVD

Having turned 30 with no job, no wife and no real idea of what his heck future holds, the very loserish lethargic but equally likable Tom Chadwick (Chris O'Dowd) decides to look way way into his past to "find himself." This highly improvised half-hour HBO comedy follows Tom as he investigates his ancestry after he inherits a very mysterious box that belonged to his great aunt. As Tom's passion for his genealogy grows, he uncovers a world of unusual stories, a cast of eccentric family members with serious issues and a growing sense of who he really is. Family Tree is another mockumentary baby from comedy genius Christopher [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Robot & Frank'

Great news for grandpas and robots and the people who love them: Robot & Frank is now on DVD! The film, which came out last summer, tells the story of what happens when, instead of taking your aging father to a nursing home, you give him a robot. In the case of this movie, your father will use the robot to get back into the jewel-thieving business. Frank Langella stars as Frank with Peter Sarsgaard as the robot (named Robot), James Marsden as the enabling son, and Liv Tyler as the daughter. Susan Sarandon rounds out the cast as a local librarian and love interest for Frank. [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Cougar Town' Season 3

Season 3 of Cougar Town is out on DVD this week, and if you've already taken the time to get over that off-putting name, you should probably go ahead and pick it up. The Courteney Cox and Busy Philipps-starring sitcom made its debut on TBS this January and if a show is good enough to get booted off of network TV only to have basic cable come to its rescue, it's probably good enough for your DVD shelf.

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'I Remember Me' by Carl Reiner

Television pioneer and comedy mainstay Carl Reiner sparked the careers of numerous TV stars, created memorable sketches with his friend Mel Brooks, and raised a successful family. Now he’s written a book talking about it, and the autobiography, I Remember Me, is available in hardcover starting this week. In it, Reiner recounts stories from his life and over fifty years in comedy. In addition to hardcover, I Remember Me is also available on Kindle and on audiobook as read by Reiner himself.

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'The Mindy Project' on DVD

Look, we all know The Mindy Project has had some ups and downs (drastic casting changes, episodes airing out of order, etc.). But its merit exists not in the depth of its side characters, but in the journey the audience takes with Mindy as she stumbles her way through love, life, and a less-than-romantic job as an OB-GYN. The show flirts with stereotypes of rom-com love, only to shine light on how absurd it often can be (in the last episode, angry neighbors yell at Mindy for running down the street into her lover's arms in the middle of the night). Its strong writers (which includes Kaling, [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Say Anything'

Do you like Valentine’s Day? If so, do you try to coordinate your DVD purchases with whatever holiday you might be celebrating? If so, maybe you’d like to buy Cameron Crowe’s 1989 classic rom-com Say Anything which Amazon has recently put out at discounted DVD and Blu-Ray prices. Fall in love all over again with Lloyd Dobler as he falls in love with Diane Court and then gets his heart broken and then falls in love with her a couple more times.

Do you not like Valentine’s Day, or you do but you don’t get why you’d buy a DVD today if you’re not even [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Celeste and Jesse Forever'

Last summer’s comedy-drama Celeste and Jesse Forever, written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack and starring Jones and Andy Samberg as the titular separated couple, is out on DVD and Blu-Ray today. The movie also features Elijah Wood, Emma Roberts, and The Mindy Project’s Chris Messina. If pilot season works in Samberg’s favor then we’ll be able to see both him and Jones in Mike Schur shows. Until that happens, Celeste and Jesse can tide you over.

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Web Therapy' Season 2

Although the third season of Web Therapy does not begin until July 23rd, the complete second season of the Showtime series came out this week on DVD! Based off the web series of the same name, Web Therapy follows psychotherapist Fiona Wallace, played by series co-creator Lisa Kudrow. The semi-improvised dark comedy consists of Wallace administering her unique brand of three-minute therapy via iChat to various patients, while simultaneously trying to work on her own marriage to husband Kip, played by Victor Garber. The two-disc DVD set is definitely worth purchasing: the line-up of guest stars is outstanding, including such famous [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Nurse Jackie' Season 4

Season 4 of Showtime pill-popping adultery medical comedy series Nurse Jackie comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray today. Emmy-award winning Edie Falco stars as the titular Nurse Jackie, this season struggling with sobriety and being a mom in New York City and also nurse things at her work. The show returns for a fifth season this spring so there is still time for you to catch up, probably with the help of this DVD.

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Eugene Mirman – An Evening of Comedy in a Fake Underground Laboratory'

Maybe you know Brooklyn comedian Eugene Mirman from his stand up or variety show hosting gigs, or perhaps you recognize his voice as weird kid Gene Belcher on Fox’s Bob’s Burgers. Either way, this week you can buy his first hour-long Comedy Central special An Evening of Comedy in a Fake Underground Laboratory on CD/DVD combo pack. The DVD special features include extra material cut from the show as well as a highlight reel from Mirman’s Comedy Central pilot Eugene! in which Mirman ran a fake television network — “like Oprah, but also, not like Oprah.”
