University of Iowa Denies HBO's Request to Film 'Girls' on Campus

The latest Girls season finale saw Hannah Horvath holding her Iowa Writers' Workshop acceptance letter, but it looks like we won't be seeing her hanging on the real University of Iowa campus next year. According to Variety, the university has denied HBO's request to film Hannah's storyline there for the fourth season.

"While we are pleased that the Iowa Writers' Workshop is receiving national attention and that our graduate is doing well in her career, our general practice is to not allow filming, due to potential disruption to campus," UI spokesman Tom Moore said in a statement (Girls writer Sarah Heyward is a graduate of the writing program). Lena Dunham Tells 'Glamour' Her Acting Days May Be Over

Girls star Lena Dunham is on the cover of Glamour's April issue, and in her interview with the fashion magazine she reportedly alluded to toning down her acting career to focus more on working behind the camera. "I don't know if I'm going to want to act anymore," she said in the interview. "I'm always relieved on the days I don't have to. I'd rather give parts to other women than be the woman having the parts." A fourth season of Girls is already locked in to air in 2015, so Dunham's intended transition won't happen right away. Either way it's surprising considering all the success she's [...]

Lena Dunham Is Writing a Four-Part 'Archie Comics' Miniseries

Girls star/creator Lena Dunham is getting ready to write her first comic book. Publisher Archie Comics announced today that they've hired Dunham to write a four-issue Archie miniseries that's expected to come out next year. There aren't any details on what Dunham's Archie comic will be about, but she said in the press release, "I was an avid Archie collector as a child — conventions, first editions that l kept in plastic sleeves, the whole shebang. It has so much cultural significance but also so much personal significance, and to get to play with these beloved characters is a wild creative opportunity." Archie Comics boss Roberta Aguirre-Sacasa added, "Lena’s take [...]

'SNL's Sasheer Zamata Will Take You on a 'Girls' Tour of Brooklyn

Newest SNL cast member Sasheer Zamata stars in the latest web video from Above Average, the digital wing of Lorne Michaels's company Above Average. In this sketch written by Celeste Ballard and Alex Scordelis, Zamata plays a superfan of HBO's Girls, giving an authentic tour of the show's Brooklyn setting.

How Lena Dunham's Directing Style Makes 'Girls' More Emotionally Resonant – and More Polarizing

At some point in the last two years it became a legal requirement in the United States to have an opinion about Lena Dunham. So, here is mine: Lena Dunham, the ultimate multi-hyphenate, is a tremendously skilled filmmaker. She also fits perfectly in the original mission of this column, in that while she is often more lauded, or at least more recognized, for her writing and acting work, her skills and choices as a director actually allow her to perfectly convey what she tries to do in Girls and her earlier work. Just as in her writing, her filmmaking choices are pitch-perfect in portraying perfectly timed humor, sadness, vulnerability, and [...]

Season 3 of 'Girls' Was Best When Everyone Was Together Being Weird

In the pilot of Girls, when Hannah Horvath expressed desire to be “the voice of [her] generation, or at least the voice of a generation” the line embodied the 20-something’s comically directionless ambition, yet critics seemed to take the message at face value, crediting Lena Dunham with being that voice in the real world. This baggage bestowed upon the show made it an exhausting topic of conversation (at the very least for young women living in New York) in spite of two strong, funny seasons. This year, Lena Dunham said to Marc Maron in her recent appearance on WTF, “People expect me to either defend or explain my generation [...]

Highlights from Lena Dunham's Keynote Address at SXSW

Lena Dunham keynoted the South by Southwest Film Conference on Monday to a house packed with attendees, many of whom waited in line for over an hour to gain entry. Dunham took the stage joking she'd decided to write a speech in lieu of doing an interview in order to make up for her previous under-preparedness as a student. For much of her 40-minute speech, Dunham ran through her bio — information which her fans mostly already know — giving detailed anecdotes funny enough to compensate for the redundancy. She said the speech was an attempt to explain what helped begin her career, noting the huge role SXSW itself [...]

Talking to 'Girls' Co-Showrunner Jenni Konner About Season 3

Serving as an executive producer, writer, and Lena Dunham's co-showrunner, Jenni Konner has been with HBO's Girls since the beginning, playing an integral role in the series. Konner started her career as a writer on Girls EP Judd Apatow's Fox sitcom Undeclared and created a couple short-lived network shows of her own before she started working as a script doctor in the movie world and eventually transitioned back to Girls when it was brand new. Now in its third season, Girls is still full of the same honesty we’ve seen in the past. Before this season's premiere even aired, HBO ordered a fourth season and their faith in the show is completely [...]

'Girls' Is Back and Good as Ever

The new season of Lena Dunham's acclaimed comedy-drama Girls premiered with back-to-back episodes on HBO last night, and Season Three finds the series in just as strong of shape as it left off last year. Girls is doing 12 episodes this year, two more than in seasons past, but Dunham and co-showrunner Jenni Konner and their team have clearly shown that they're up to the challenge.

The premiere episodes pick up by jumping a little bit ahead in time and tracking what the show's four main characters are up to now in the wake of Season 2's climax. Hannah and Adam are back together, and she's recovered from her OCD [...]

Judd Apatow Says He and Lena Dunham Have Talked About Ending 'Girls' After Six Seasons

Judd Apatow gave a nice lengthy interview in front of students at Loyola Marymount last week (via THR), and in it, he revealed that he and his fellows Girls producers Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner have discussed ending the show after six seasons:

How many more seasons are you going to do of Girls? We've talked about doing six seasons. I guess that could change, it's not set … I think we're all committed that we'll do six … Do you have an ending in mind? No I don't think so. But we've talked about it. It makes you respect the ending of The Sopranos though. [...]

'SNL' Review: Lena Dunham, Guest Stars, and Lots of Impressions

This time last year, Megh Wright and I compiled a list of 10 first-time SNL hosts we'd like to see someday. The list included Stephen Colbert (right?) and the now-sadly-late Philip Seymour Hoffman, but decidedly not Lena Dunham. She was one of the first people we discussed, and we both agreed to pass over the Girls creator/star in favor of figures who might make better hosts. I told Megh then that Dunham would be a person people like us would want to see host, but by the time the episode started, we'd quickly realize, "Oh, this wasn't as good an idea as we thought." Dunham doesn't strike me [...]

Talking to Colin Quinn About Standup, Twitter Hate, and 'Girls' Season 3

SNL veteran Colin Quinn, who sarcastically hails himself as “one of the great writers in the entertainment industry,” will host the 66th annual Writers Guild Awards in New York Saturday. Quinn is currently touring his one-man show Colin Quinn: Unconstitutional (nicknamed “The Toosh”) and appearing on Girls as Alex Karpovsky’s bespectacled, coffee-shop-owning mentor. He’s also working with old friends Jim Norton, Nick DiPaolo and Tom Papa on a very meta Jerry Seinfeld-produced cop show about making a cop show. It’s called Cop Show.

I recently had a chance to talk to Quinn about his thoughts on the New York standup scene, the sheer vitriol he faces [...]

'Girls' Renewed for a Fourth Season

The third season of Girls hasn't even premiered yet, but that hasn't stopped Lena Dunham's hit show from earning a fourth season on HBO. According to THR, the next season will begin filming this spring and air in 2015, so the future of the Girls thinkpiece is now secure for at least another year.
