Lena Dunham's Girls premieres its fourth season on Sunday, January 11th, and HBO released a new promo yesterday featuring Hannah and friends as they continue to deal with their, in the words of guest star Gaby Hoffmann, "profoundly damaged" lives. If you need to catch up before the big premiere, check out our complete review of last season.
To celebrate both of their Emmy nominations, Variety recently sat down with Lena Dunham and Fred Armisen for a hybrid interview/conversation that covers everything from their thoughts on each other's shows Girls and Portlandia to what it's like to perform on SNL. Here's both of them talking about Lorne Michaels and his behind-the-scenes skills and power:
Armisen: Lorne gives the most valuable kind of notes. I don't know how he knows. I don't know if he has like some secret connection to my brain but he addresses questions that I haven't asked yet and then I feel better about a whole season. In a sentence, he can diffuse [...]
With SNL's 39th season coming to a close, we're taking a look at the past season with a series of posts examining the highs, lows, and other memorable moments from the past eight months. Here we recall some of our favorite sketches from the season — both live sketches and videos.
Season 39 of SNL certainly hasn't been the most popular among viewers, with its first half bogged down with criticism over the lack of diversity in the cast, and its second half attacked (often unfairly) for uneven writing under new head writer Colin Jost. Even though the show hired Sasheer Zamata (along with two black female writers), and the script [...]
Judd Apatow gave a nice lengthy interview in front of students at Loyola Marymount last week (via THR), and in it, he revealed that he and his fellows Girls producers Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner have discussed ending the show after six seasons:
How many more seasons are you going to do of Girls? We've talked about doing six seasons. I guess that could change, it's not set … I think we're all committed that we'll do six … Do you have an ending in mind? No I don't think so. But we've talked about it. It makes you respect the ending of The Sopranos though. [...]
This time last year, Megh Wright and I compiled a list of 10 first-time SNL hosts we'd like to see someday. The list included Stephen Colbert (right?) and the now-sadly-late Philip Seymour Hoffman, but decidedly not Lena Dunham. She was one of the first people we discussed, and we both agreed to pass over the Girls creator/star in favor of figures who might make better hosts. I told Megh then that Dunham would be a person people like us would want to see host, but by the time the episode started, we'd quickly realize, "Oh, this wasn't as good an idea as we thought." Dunham doesn't strike me [...]
