'Happy Endings,' 'Modern Family,' 'Daily Show' Earn GLAAD Media Award Nominations

GLAAD (or the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, for those of you who don't know your acronyms) just released its list of nominees today for the annual GLAAD Media Awards, recognizing TV shows, movies, music, news, and other forms of entertainment that positively portray LGBTers. The nominees for Outstanding Comedy Series were Happy Endings, Modern Family, Glee, and newcomers The New Normal and Go On. The New Normal is centered around a gay couple and a surrogate mother bearing their child, and Go On features a lesbian lawyer character who is a part of Matthew Perry's grief support group. GLAAD Reports that ABC Leads the Networks in Gay Characters (And Sassy Gay Assistant Characters)

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation just dropped its “Where We Are on TV” report 2012, its annual analysis of LGBT presence in broadcast and cable TV. GLAAD reports that the 2012-2013 TV season has the highest-ever percentage of LGBT characters on scripted primetime network TV, and comedy-wise, ABC led the pack in terms of having the most gay characters (thanks to Happy Endings, Modern Family, and a handful of other sitcoms). GLAAD Not Happy with SNL's Estro-Maxxx Sketch

GLAAD has released a statement about this past weekend's Estro-Maxxx commercial parody from SNL: "This segment cannot be defended as 'just a joke' because there was no 'joke' to speak of. The attempted comedy of the skit hinges solely on degrading the lives and experiences of transgender women. Holding people up for ridicule simply on the basis of their identity fuels a dangerous and hurtful climate and puts people in danger, especially given how infrequently the media shines a fair and accurate light on the lives of transgender people."
