The Unceasing Honesty of Dan Harmon

Few people would relish the opportunity to have their lives documented in the midst of a low point peppered with job loss, substance abuse, self-doubt, and relationship woes, but in talking to Dan Harmon, it seems that he would have it no other way. In the recently released documentary Harmontown, director Neil Berkeley takes us along on a 20-date live podcast tour with Harmon and his cohorts after Harmon's dismissal from Community and during a somewhat uncertain time in his career and personal life. It's an entertaining and often uncomfortable look not only at Harmon, but also at the people who surround him in the personal and public worlds. I talked [...]

Dan Harmon Apologizes for What He Said About 'Community' Season 4

After going off on a rant about the latest season of Community on his podcast Harmontown, Community creator Dan Harmon took to Twitter and Tumblr yesterday and this morning to apologize for his words. Harmon tweeted, "I feel bad if I made anyone feel bad with my comments in harmontown. It's a dirty, personal comedy podcast, not charismatic for quoting," and "I like making stuff that pleases people, I like being honest about my feelings but I hate hurting other people, especially community fans."

He then wrote a lengthy Tumblr post, entitled "It Won't Happen Again Again," in the wee hours of the morning to [...]

Watch Dan Harmon's Speech at the 'Community' Convention

Dan Harmon is still really, really good at talking about himself.

Dan Harmon and Jason Sudeikis Prank Called Chevy Chase as Joe Biden Last Night

Community creator Dan Harmon's whirlwind tour across America with his live show Harmontown is in progress, and at a show in Brooklyn last night, Harmon and guest Jason Sudeikis prank called Chevy Chase, who, like Harmon recently parted ways with the NBC sitcom that brought them together. Harmon had invited Chase to appear at the Harmontown show, explaining to the audience, "I texted him, 'I'm doing my show in Brooklyn tomorrow night; are you in New York?' and three hours later, he texted back the word country." Dan Harmon then proceeded to call Chevy Chase on speakerphone, holding his phone up to the mic. When Chase [...]

Jack Black, John Oliver, Gillian Jacobs, and More Show Up in the Trailer for 'Harmontown'

Last year it was announced that Community creator Dan Harmon would be touring his live show/podcast Harmontown around the country then turning it into a documentary by director Neil Berkeley, and a new trailer was just released. This sneak peek features stars like Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Gillian Jacobs, Chris Hardwick, and John Oliver attempting to explain who exactly Harmon is and includes some special appearances by Chevy Chase (in the form of blog screen caps and footage of the now infamous voicemail message). Harmontown debuts in select theaters as well as VOD on October 3rd.

Watch a Trailer for the Dan Harmon Documentary 'Harmontown'

Last year, after having been fired from his TV show Community, creator Dan Harmon took his live show/podcast Harmontown on a nationwide tour and it was filmed for a documentary by director Neil Berkeley (Beauty Is Embarrassing). Here's the trailer to that very documentary, featuring appearances from Sarah Silverman, John Oliver, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Jack Black, and more. The movie is also called Harmontown, and it premieres at South by Southwest on March 8th.

Report: Dan Harmon Confirms He's Been Asked Back to 'Community'

A report came in earlier this month that Sony is interested in having Dan Harmon to return to Community for the show's fifth season, and now, it looks like Harmon has confirmed the news. Hollywookiee reports that, at the most recent live taping of his podcast Harmontown, the Community creator said this:

Dan Harmon just told the audience of his podcast Harmontown that he has been asked to return to Community! As soon as Dan said it, he asked that it be edited out of the podcast and it was just for us audience members (and I wasn't going to say a word), but soon after that, [...]

Here's What It's Like to Spend 36 Hours with Dan Harmon

"When any television show is lionized for being 'smart,' someone's laughing all the way to the bank — some company … That there's a difference between any of this shit is the greatest joke that television ever told. I mean, as the creator of Community, I'm telling you: It's all garbage. And the idea that my garbage, y'know, needed a better time slot or deserved an Emmy or didn't deserve an Emmy, the idea that it was better or worse than 30 Rock or Arrested Development or Freaks and Geeks and all that shit — you only have to take a couple steps back before you realize that you're looking at a bunch of goddamn baby [...]

Dan Harmon's First Book 'You'll Be Perfect When You're Dead' Drops Tomorrow

Community and Channel 101 mastermind Dan Harmon is releasing his first book, a collection of the best writings from his amazing blog, "Dan Harmon Poops." The book, entitled You'll Be Perfect When You're Dead: The Collected Online Writings of Dan Harmon, was just announced as a surprise to fans yesterday by Harmon's girlfriend Erin McGathy on Twitter and Reddit to coincide with the tour of Harmon's live show "Harmontown." It's a 307-page book that will only be available for purchase on Harmontown.com tomorrow, 1/8/13, from 12AM to 11:59PST, or during stops on the Harmontown tour (if there are copies left). Only 900 copies of [...]

Diving Into the Cult of Dan Harmon in 'Harmontown'

When introducing the documentary Harmontown at the South by Southwest Film Festival, director Neil Berkeley (Beauty is Embarrassing) described his film's thesis, saying, “The point of this film is not about whether Dan Harmon is a good person or a bad person, but to understand why people are in that room listening to him.” The film follows Harmon on tour with his Harmontown podcast shortly after the embattled show runner's firing from Community in early 2013. Berkeley's remarks make clear it's less a tour doc than a character study, in a similar vein to Rodman Flender's doc, Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, which premiered in 2011 also at SXSW. And [...]

The Annotated Wisdom of Dan Harmon

Dan Harmon has a lot of stuff in his head, stuff that he used to create and run three seasons of Community as well as found Channel 101 and create a new method for understanding story structure. In these projects as well as in older ones like The Sarah Silverman Program, his failed pilot Heat Vision and Jack, and his current live show and podcast (also the subject of an upcoming documentary) Harmontown, Harmon has made himself known for being both brilliant and hard to work with.

Fortunately for us Harmon won't stop creating any time soon, with an animated film written by Charlie Kaufman currently [...]

Talking to Dan Harmon About Harmontown, 'Community' Season 4, and His New Shows

It's been a turbulent year for Dan Harmon. After being ousted from his position as showrunner of the beloved but Nielsen-challenged NBC sitcom Community, Harmon quickly sold new shows to CBS, Fox, and Adult Swim, founded a stop-motion production company called Starburns Industries that's producing a Charlie Kaufman movie, started podcasting his live show Harmontown, released his first book, and went on a 20-city cross-country tour with Harmontown, which will be the subject of an upcoming documentary. I recently caught up with a fully-bearded Dan Harmon backstage at the final show of his Harmontown tour, a triumphant Los Angeles homecoming for Harmon and company after a month on the [...]
