When introducing the documentary Harmontown at the South by Southwest Film Festival, director Neil Berkeley (Beauty is Embarrassing) described his film's thesis, saying, “The point of this film is not about whether Dan Harmon is a good person or a bad person, but to understand why people are in that room listening to him.” The film follows Harmon on tour with his Harmontown podcast shortly after the embattled show runner's firing from Community in early 2013. Berkeley's remarks make clear it's less a tour doc than a character study, in a similar vein to Rodman Flender's doc, Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, which premiered in 2011 also at SXSW. And [...]

Dan Harmon has a lot of stuff in his head, stuff that he used to create and run three seasons of Community as well as found Channel 101 and create a new method for understanding story structure. In these projects as well as in older ones like The Sarah Silverman Program, his failed pilot Heat Vision and Jack, and his current live show and podcast (also the subject of an upcoming documentary) Harmontown, Harmon has made himself known for being both brilliant and hard to work with.
Fortunately for us Harmon won't stop creating any time soon, with an animated film written by Charlie Kaufman currently [...]
It's been a turbulent year for Dan Harmon. After being ousted from his position as showrunner of the beloved but Nielsen-challenged NBC sitcom Community, Harmon quickly sold new shows to CBS, Fox, and Adult Swim, founded a stop-motion production company called Starburns Industries that's producing a Charlie Kaufman movie, started podcasting his live show Harmontown, released his first book, and went on a 20-city cross-country tour with Harmontown, which will be the subject of an upcoming documentary. I recently caught up with a fully-bearded Dan Harmon backstage at the final show of his Harmontown tour, a triumphant Los Angeles homecoming for Harmon and company after a month on the [...]
Community creator Dan Harmon is taking his live show/podcast Harmontown on a nationwide tour beginning January 10th, and it was just announced via Facebook that the entire tour will be filmed for a documentary by director Neil Berkeley. For the uninitiated, Harmontown is a live show in which Harmon and sidekick Jeff Davis talk about whatever they want for an hour, with the conversation ranging from absurdly dumb to brilliant. Click this link for tickets to the tour, and you could end up in the background of what's sure to be the Gimme Shelter of comedy podcast tour documentaries (minus the tragedy).
