'High Maintenance' and the Art of the Audience Surrogate

With the release of three new episodes last week, High Maintenance went from the one web series you need to be watching to the one web series you still need to be watching. Long-trumpeted by critics of both traditional and new media as the pinnacle of what creators are accomplishing online, High Maintenance returned with three new episodes fully-financed by Vimeo and released under their new original content outfit, Vimeo On Demand.

And what they released was more of the same: character-driven, New York-quirky, sad/funny, length-agnostic short films drawn together by their cross-river view of Manhattan and “The Guy”, co-creator Ben Sinclair’s drug dealing vagabond who waltzes in and out [...]

The Wonderful 'High Maintenance' Will Be Vimeo's First Funded Original Show

Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair's hit web series High Maintenance about a New York weed delivery guy is getting six more episodes and funding by Vimeo in the site's first push toward original programming. According to Variety, Vimeo has funded an undisclosed amount for the new episodes to launch on their Vimeo On Demand service later this year.

"We’re elated to be working directly with Vimeo to make our series with the creative control a television network would never afford us. They are a platform that truly celebrates filmmaking," Blichfeld and Sinclair said in a statement. If you haven't yet checked out High Maintenance, do yourself [...]

Web Series 'High Maintenance' Returns with New Episodes, One with Hannibal Buress

The excellent web series High Maintenance, which we profiled earlier this year, is back with three new episodes that premiered over the weekend. Created by husband and wife team Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld, High Maintenance follows a weed delivery guy (Sinclair) dropping off marijuana for a different New Yorker each week (each episode stands on its own, so no need to start from the beginning). Here's the first new episode, featuring comedian Hannibal Buress. The rest are available here.

Blazing the Internet TV Show Trail with 'High Maintenance's Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair

It's been nearly two years since we first featured High Maintenance, the stoner-friendly web series from husband/wife duo Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld that follows an unnamed weed dealer (Sinclair) as as he makes deliveries to a diverse and never-ending assortment of NYC residents. Since its 2012 debut, High Maintenance has grown from a scrappy DIY web series to getting picked up as Vimeo's very first funded original show, and today marks the premiere of its brand new season online. Ahead of High Maintenance's return, I talked to Blichfeld and Sinclair about why they opted out of the traditional television pilot route, what we can expect [...]

This Week In Web Videos: 'High Maintenance'

Weed humor and Seth Rogen are not inextricably linked after all, and High Maintenance is proof.

Created and written by husband and wife team Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld, executive produced by them and Sinclair’s manager, Russell Gregory, and brought to life by a stellar cast and crew, High Maintenance follows a cycling weed man as he makes his deliveries to different New Yorkers in their native habitats. Nuanced in its voyeurism and deft in its subtle comedic breaks, this is more than a funny show. It’s honest and true, unapologetically and consistently straight with no regard for Internet video conventions or goofy stoner genre norms. [...]

'The New York Times' Profiles 'High Maintenance,' 'Sound Advice,' and More

"Using this anthology structure, the show captures a wide swath of personalities, and while they include a cross-dressing father, a self-described asexual who does magic tricks and a homeless woman who dates for shelter, High Maintenance is not predictably quirky. It’s humane, superbly acted (by many unfamiliar faces) and as blasé about eccentricity as, well, a born New Yorker. Sometimes this style can turn into a gushing love letter to the city, depicted as a benign playground for grown-ups with no serious consequences. But the visual ambition here complements this sunny mood and makes you forgive it."
