'SNL' Review: Taraji P. Henson Almost Saves the Day

Despite all the criticisms I've made about SNL, I should say that I love this show. And not just what I considered the glory years of the series – the late 90s that I grew up with, or the late 70s that my parents grew up with, or the late 80s I discovered in college, or the late 2000s that inspired me to start reviewing it online – I've loved it even during the not-as-great seasons 39 and 40. Even at its worst, SNL remains a fascinating experiment in live TV sketch comedy, and if I'm going to spend a chunk of my week doing something, I want it to be a positive experience. I've never understood [...]

'SNL' Review: Ladies Night with Charlize Theron

Well, that was quite a turnaround.

To everyone who commented on last week's tirade against Andrew Garfield's lackluster episode that it was about time I gave up on SNL: this episode right here is why I still love this show, and why I will never give up on it. The 90 minutes was about as solid as it gets, with a low-expectations host Charlize Theron blending in seamlessly with the cast, the writers performing on overdrive, and even a few head-turning live-TV moments. We haven't seen this level of consistency since Kerry Washington hosted in November — an episode with which this one shared a few interesting [...]

'SNL' Review: Walking Tall with Chris Hemsworth

One of the bigger frustrations for those of us following SNL's 40th season is that, despite the show's ongoing ups and downs, this current version of SNL is one we want to get behind. Kate McKinnon, Taran Killam, and Cecily Strong are as fun to watch and dominant in sketches as previous eras' stars were (regardless how rosey nostalgia has tinted alums like Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg), and the video segments are as sharply executed as they've ever been. What SNL has been lacking are an overall confidence in its assets and a consistent understanding of how to deploy them effectively.

The stronger episodes this season have featured east cast member putting his or her best foot forward. For example, [...]

Hillary Clinton Considered Guest Starring on 'Home Improvement'

The Bill Clinton library released a bunch of previously-confidential documents from his time in the White House, and Politico detailing a time that then-First Lady Hillary Clinton came close to guest starring on the Tim Allen sitcom Home Improvement in the early/mid-'90s. Here's the internal White House memo about Home Improvement's offer to have Clinton do the show:

I know this may sound like a wild idea, but I think it is an interesting one to discuss. Rick Kaplan [a TV executive friend of the Clintons] brought to my attention that Home Improvement would very much like to have Hillary make a guest appearance on its show. Home Improvement is [...]

Help Jared Logan Get Hillary Clinton to Speak to His D&D Club

Standup Jared Logan just launched a Kickstarter project for a great cause. Logan, who most recently appeared in his own Comedy Central Half Hour special as well as Splitsider's own A Night at Whiplash, unveiled his crowdfunding project today called "Hillary Clinton: The Ultimate Adventure," in which he hopes to raise $200,000 to get Hillary Clinton to speak to his Dungeons & Dragons club. Here's an excerpt from the Kickstarter description:

By achieving this goal, we will prove that a democracy is for the people and by the people. We will show that even the most disenfranchised and oppressed group in this country (tabletop roleplayers) can [...]

Hillary Clinton Lets Jason Segel Down Easy

A little while back, Jason Segel told Us Weekly that he really wanted to put Madam Secretary Clinton in his next film, saying you can feel her comic chops "from a mile away." Well, it seems like Mrs. Clinton took his offer very seriously and wrote him a letter to say she just doesn't have time right now to star in Forgetting Sarah Marshall 2: More Forgettable, Sarahier and Marshallest but maybe one day:
