What Horror and Comedy Have in Common

A funny thing about Americans: every year, crowds flock to the theatre and spend millions of dollars for the chance to see pretty people die on screen. The horror genre is popular for the same reason that people spend hundreds of dollars to go to a theme park to ride roller coasters — people love being scared. In fact, while sitting in a movie theater watching a horror movie, you’re likely to hear equal parts laughter and screams coming from the audience. Generally the cries of terror are heard first, followed almost immediately by a wave of chuckles, giggles, and knee slapping. In a paper on the functions of humor, Dr. [...]

Guillermo del Toro Made the Couch Gag for This Year's 'Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror

Pacific Rim and Hellboy filmmaker Guillermo del Toro will be taking the reins of part of The Simpsons' opening credits for the show's Halloween episode this year, Fox announced yesterday. The show's 24th annual "Treehouse of Horror" episode will feature a couch gag created by del Toro that involves monsters from classic horror films from the past several decades. Bill Plympton, John Kricfalusi, and Banksy have all created a couch gag to the show in the past.

Left Handed Radio: Freddy's Back in '9thmare on Elm Street' Thursday Night

Left Handed Radio presents The Sequel Machine, a monthly live show where 25 writers of all stripes (The Onion, Fast Company, McSweeney's) collaborate on a sequel to one of film's biggest franchises. The catch is that the writers pen one page at a time, and only get to see the page before their own. The results are hilariously twisted and virtually no different than a real sequel.

This month is 9thmare on Elm Street! Freddy Kruger is back in action to slash throats and sling puns.

Thursday, October 4th at 11:00 PM, UCB East Theatre, 3rd Street and Avenue A, NYC. Tickets are $5. Make [...]

Scary Movie 5 Hires Writers, Eyes Original Cast

Bend down to this hole carved through the side of my bathroom stall so I can whisper some really spooooooky news to you: Scary Movie 5 is in the works. Reportedly the filmmakers behind the fifth…quel have hired writers Stephen Leff, John Aboud and Michael Colton to pen the screenplay, and have supposedly extended offers to previous cast members Anthony Anderson, Regina Hall and Kevin Hart, who will probably want to read the awful, humiliating way they die before signing on. I, for one, hold out hope that this one could be a return to form. Yes, I know many people blame the series for spawning such [...]

Jordan Peele's Horror Movie Will Be About "the Fears of Being a Black Man Today"

In last month's issue of Entertainment Weekly, Jordan Peele revealed that he was developing and potentially directing a horror film for Darko Entertainment. "That's a straight horror movie. I want to be essentially a thriller director," Peele said. "I'm a big fan of horror movies. Rosemary's Baby, Stepford Wives — I'm sort of taking a lead from that genre of film. It'll be, just, very cool." Peele recently shared more details on the project with Playboy:

"I've been spending the first half of my career focusing on comedy but my goal, in all honesty, is to write and direct horror movies. I have one that I'm working [...]

Bob Odenkirk and Patton Oswalt Join the Cast of 'The Kitchen Sink'

Bob Odenkirk, Patton Oswalt, and Ian Roberts have joined the cast of The Kitchen Sink, a new horror-sci-fi-comedy, Deadline reports. The movie is being directed by Robbie Pickering (Natural Selection), written by Oren Uziel (the upcoming 22 Jump Street and Downtown Owl), and produced by Jonah Hill. Here's how the plot is described:

The action takes place in Dilford, a place where vampires were at the top of the social order, zombies were at the bottom, and the humans were in the middle. This all goes awry and it’s a battle, and it’s up to three reps of those groups to restore harmony.

Odenkirk, Oswalt, and Roberts are joining [...]

Zombieland TV Show Slowly Shambles Around Fox

If anything would get Bill Murray out of his opulent solid gold mansion for a day, it's the chance to slip into some prosthetic rotting flesh for Fox's new Zombieland TV show. In addition to leveraging our collective love of the teeming undead masses, the 2009 film's writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick would also be penning the show, which is rumored for the 2012-2013 season. Over at Vulture, Zombieland producer Gavin Polone reveals that CBS had originally ordered a Zombieland pilot script back in 2005, as "[t]he original plan for this was to make it as a TV show." As to be expected, hopes were high [...]

Billy Hader Talks About His Scary-Good Comedy-Slasher With Judd Apatow

Ever since Abbott and Costello met Frankenstein, comedy and horror have been going together like so much hilarious peanut butter and terrifying chocolate ("A Farewell To Arms?" Raimi, you genius!).  As such, Bill Hader's upcoming slasher-comedy House Of Joel sounds right up our haunted alley…though it might feature a different ghoulish name when it comes out. "Well, I’m not sure it’s called House of Joel anymore. I don’t know what’s happening with it exactly. Judd, me, and [”Human Giant” director] Jason Woliner are gonna meet in L.A. soon to figure out what the next steps are. It’s a funny, funny script and it’s Judd’s take on a slasher [...]

The Summer Caretaker at the Overlook Hotel Asks for a Raise, by David Guzman

I first want to say what a pleasure it is to be back as the summer caretaker for the Overlook Hotel. The grand architecture, its beautiful location in the Colorado mountains, the pleasant staff and clientele; it’s truly an honor to work here.

I must be upfront, though, and tell you I’m here to ask for a raise. There are a few factors that come into play. As I understand it, the winter caretaker position pays just as much as the summer position. And that’s just not fair, since the job of summer caretaker requires much more work than that of winter caretaker. In addition, our winter caretakers tend [...]

Watch Michael Cera Play a Psychopath in Chile in the Trailer for 'Magic Magic'

Here's the trailer for Magic Magic, an upcoming horror/thriller that finds Michael Cera in his first big non-comedy role as a creepy psychopath in Chile. Hopefully, this will silence you weirdos who gripe about Cera playing the same type of characters once and for all.

Good Morning! This Horrifying Simpsons Cosplay Will Give You Nightmares

Cosplay, in which fans of entertainment properties dress up as characters from said properties, is popular in places like Harajuku and Comic Con. People dress up like, say, Batman or Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, often spending tons of time on their costumes. It's fun and harmless and a cool way to express fandom. This, though? This is something else. These Simpsons cosplay costumes are both really sloppily put together and incredibly unsettling. They picked not just characters, but specific frames to recreate, and the results are… well, see for yourself. But fair warning, you can't un-see the Mr. Burns in the image below.
