'iSteve' and the Fun of an Intentionally Half-Assed Biopic

In a scathing review published yesterday on Wired, Mat Honan panned iSteve, Funny Or Die’s 80-minute parody biopic of Steve Jobs, calling it “profoundly unfunny… worse in every way than a sidewalk dentist in Bangkok sans anesthesia.” His review is funny in its own right, though not intentionally; reading it, one gets the strong sense that Honan (a tech reporter) is an admirer of Steve Jobs and that part of what bothered him about iSteve was the film's lack of reverence for its subject.

It's a bit unfair to review iSteve as if it were a feature film — it is, and doesn’t pretend to be anything but, a cheap and extended sketch, a cheeky internet experiment. [...]

Comedy video website Funny or Die has released its first movie this morning. Called iSteve, it's a comedic biopic of Steve Jobs starring Justin Long as the Apple founder and it's  now streaming on FOD. Clocking in at 79 minutes, it's not only the first movie for Funny or Die but also the first biopic of Jobs to see a wide release, beating Ashton Kutcher's Jobs out of the gate. iSteve was written and directed by Funny or Die staffer Ryan Perez, who says he only used Steve Jobs's Wikipedia page and a few interviews as source material. It took Perez five days to write the script [...]

Funny or Die Made a Feature-Length Steve Jobs Biopic

There are currently two Steve Jobs biopics in the works – one that was already filmed starring Ashton Kutcher and another written by Aaron Sorkin – but Funny or Die beat them to the punch and is releasing a Steve Jobs biopic first. The NY Times reports this week that Funny or Die's Ryan Perez wrote and directed a comedic biopic about Jobs called iSteve that stars Justin Long as the Apple mogul and runs somewhere between 60 and 75 minutes in length. Perez wrote the script in three days and shot it in five. The movie also stars James Urbaniak (Venture Bros.) as Bill Gates, Michaela Watkins (SNL) [...]
