Talking to Brett Gelman About His New Adult Swim Special

Tomorrow night, Adult Swim is airing Dinner with Friends with Brett Gelman and Friends, a new half-hour special starring comedian Brett Gelman and directed by Jason Woliner, who co-wrote the script with Gelman. Beginning as a talk show Gelman hosts over a meal with six Hollywood actors a la Jon Favreau's Dinner for Five, Dinner with Friends with Brett Gelman and Friends quickly takes a turn and descends into an evening of psychological torture. Like Eagleheart, the Adult Swim show Gelman acts on and Woliner is a writer, director, and producer on, Dinner with Friends is fast-paced, funny, and unlike anything else on TV.

I recently talked with Brett Gelman [...]

Human Giant Fires T-Shirt Guns at Audience (Then Sits Down for Panel Discussion)

The Paley Center for Media, which has locations in both New York and LA, dedicates itself to the preservation of television and radio history. Inside their vast archives of more than 150,000 television shows, commercials, and radio programs, there are thousands of important and funny programs waiting to be rediscovered by comedy nerds like you and me. Each week, this column will highlight a new gem waiting for you at the Paley Library to quietly laugh at. (Seriously, it’s a library, so keep it down.)

In the past I’ve covered a number of panel discussions held at the Paley Center for New Media ranging from 30 Rock to [...]

Inside 'Eagleheart's' Second Season with Creators Michael Koman, Andrew Weinberg, and Jason Woliner

Currently in the midst of its second season, Adult Swim’s 11-minute crime-comedy Eagleheart has quickly emerged as one of the fastest and funniest shows on TV. For the uninitiated, Eagleheart stars Chris Elliott, Maria Thayer (Strangers with Candy), and Brett Gelman (Comedy Bang Bang) as a trio of sociopathic U.S. Marshals who wind up in all kinds of exceedingly strange and hyper-violent scenarios week to week. Eagleheart is put out by Conan O’Brien’s production company and written by longtime Conan writers Michael Koman and Andrew Weinberg and Human Giant's Jason Woliner, who manage to cram a full 30 minutes worth of story into each 11-minute installment.

Eagleheart's second season [...]

Watch a Trailer for Brett Gelman's New Adult Swim Special

Last week, Adult Swim announced that they're premiering a new special called Dinner with Friends with Brett Gelman and Friends that Brett Gelman and Jason Woliner (Eagleheart) made together, and here's a teaser trailer for the special. It's a Dinner for Five-esque conversation show (featuring guests Dale Dickey, Gilbert Gottfried, Fred Melamed, Alison Pill, Lance Reddick, and Alex Karpovsky) that takes a frightening turn and devolves into Gelman psychologically torturing his guests.

'Apocalypse Now'-ish: Exploring and Understanding 'Eagleheart's Ambitious Latest Season

Where would Jaws be without its malfunctioning mecha-shark? Or Apocalypse Now and its malfunctioning mecha-Brando? The unintentional influence of circumstance can lead to some unpredictable and wonderful things, and that is certainly the case with the most recent season of Adult Swim’s Eagleheart (entirely available online).

The Jason Woliner-helmed project, starring Chris Elliott, Maria Thayer, and Brett Gelman and co-written by Woliner, Michael Koman, and Andrew Weinberg, has always flown under the radar on Adult Swim, despite an impressive list of guest stars (Conan O'Brien, Dean Norris, Ben Stiller, Mickey Rooney, and most recently, Joe Estevez) and a steady output of bizarre scenarios. The show recently wrapped up [...]

Jason Woliner's "Je Shirt" Made Its Way Into 'The Simpsons' Last Night

Here's a still from last night's new Simpsons episode, which featured one of the characters wearing a "Je Shirt" – the novelty Jay Leno/Che Guevara T-shirt line created by Jason Woliner of Human Giant and Eagleheart fame. The shirt was worn by the host of a Pawn Stars-y show that Homer is watching at the top of the episode. The reference was probably lost on the vast majority of the Simpsons audience but it's pretty great that Woliner's novelty T-shirt joke from three months ago has now been immortalized on The Simpsons. I bet this almost makes up for the novelty T-shirt line completely destroying his life.

Talking to Chris Elliott and the Writers of Eagleheart About the New Season, Which Starts Tonight!

Eagleheart, Adult Swim’s fast-paced action-comedy starring Chris Elliott, premieres its second season tonight at midnight, and from what I’ve seen, this season will see the show become one of the craziest and funniest comedies on the air. I got to watch the first few episodes of the new season, and while I enjoyed Eagleheart last year, Season 2 blows it out of the water. Seriously, this is some awesome, really funny stuff that you shouldn’t miss, and you don’t have to have seen the first season to jump in this year.

I recently sat down with the show’s star, living comedy legend Chris Elliott, and the writers/executive producers Andrew [...]

Aziz Ansari, Jason Woliner, and Eric Wareheim Present 'Food Club'

Here's a new video from JASH of a food and culture show called "Food Club" that was created by and stars Aziz Ansari, Eric Wareheim, and Jason Woliner, with Parks and Rec writer Alan Yang as Swab Yang. Wearing silly-looking captains' hats, the three comedians travel from restaurant to restaurant, deciding whether the eateries are plaque-worthy or not.

Ansari, Wareheim, and Woliner started their Food Club years ago, before this video, as Ansari told The AV Club in 2010:

Talking to 'Eagleheart' Writers Jason Woliner and Andrew Weinberg About the New Season

Adult Swim's absurdist Chris Elliott action-comedy Eagleheart returned for its third season last week. This year, the show's creative team (made up of creators/writers Andrew Weinberg and Michael Koman, and writer/director Jason Woliner) opted to turn Eagleheart into one long serialized story called Paradise Rising, covering Elliott's character Chris Monsanto's 10-episode quest to prove his innocence in the death of a fellow US Marshal.

I recently had the chance to talk to Andrew Weinberg and Jason Woliner about Eagleheart's shift in focus, why they don't like using comedic actors as guest stars, and how it's not the sort of TV show you can just have on in the background.

Jason Woliner's New Novelty Shirt Business is a Fiasco

Comedian Jason Woliner, the non-performing fourth member of Human Giant and a resident writer/director on Adult Swim's Eagleheart, attempted to get into the novelty T-shirt business last week, but so far, it's been a complete disaster. Woliner started his business, the Je Shirt Company, last Tuesday to market a "Che Leno" novelty shirt, a mash-up of Jay Leno and Che Guevara's faces. Customers were unable to recognize the face as being Jay Leno's and the shirt had to be redesigned, kicking off a series of mishaps and public Twitter meltdowns that continue to this day. Woliner has lost thousands of dollars on the shirt line in [...]

Aziz Ansari, Randy, and the Nebulous State of "Alt-Comedy"

This week's New Yorker features a lengthy profile of Aziz Ansari, talking about his place in the "alternative comedy" scene and the fine line between his Randy character from Funny People and his normal standup persona. It's only available online for subscribers, unfortunately. Here's a little taste: Sometimes it seems possible, too, that Randy might outlive Ansari. Randy recently released a hip-hop single, "Aaaaaaangry," that contained — brilliantly — no rapping at all; instead, Randy complained, at great length, that various hip-hop luminaries were ignoring him. "He's afraid it will eventually destroy him," Poehler says, mostly kidding. "I think he fights to make sure people don't think that's [...]
