Maximum Fun Launches a New Podcast About Action Movies, 'Wham Bam Pow'

Jesse Thorn's podcast network Maximum Fun just release a new show last week called Wham Bam Pow. Hosted by stand-ups Cameron Esposito, Ricky Carmona, and Rhea Butcher, Wham Bam Pow is a show in which the three enthusiastically discuss and review action and sci-fi movies. Wham Bam Pow becomes Maximum Fun's 12th show and is the latest in a series of March additions to the podcast network. Earlier this month, Maximum Fun picked up Dave Hill's Podcast Incident and started a new show about motherhood called One Bad Mother, from Biz Ellis and Theresa Thorn. So, if you don't already have enough podcasts to listen to, here are more [...]

Past guests have included Jeff Bridges, Judd Apatow, Dolly Parton, Michael Ian Black, Demetri Martin, Chris Gethard, Bob Newhart, and Key & Peele. Under the new deal, Thorn will continue to produce Bullseye independently; it will just be distributed by NPR. Congrats [...]

Tracing the Birth of the Comedy Podcast Boom

The Montreal Just for Laughs Festival is not every comic’s cup of tea. That being said, many consider it to be the most prestigious event of the year. Not only is it the largest international comedy festival in the world, it is also the best attended by industry representatives, precisely the put-off for some. Last year at the 29th installment of the summer rendezvous in Quebec’s cultural capital the Keynote Address was delivered by Marc Maron and kicked off the Conference finale — a three-day parade of panels, parties, pitching and pimping between the purse-holders and the performers.

“I have never been more nervous about anything than to [...]

WTF with Marc Maron Comes to Public Radio

WTF with Marc Maron, the super-popular comedy podcast, is set to be exposed to a whole new audience thanks to the efforts of The Sound of Young America's Jesse Thorn and Nick White. They've gone through the massive archive of podcasts and created 10 hour-long episodes of WTF for public radio. So far, it's been picked up by WBEZ and Chicago Public Media, and it should be coming to many more stations in the near future.

Talking to Jesse Thorn about NPR, Podcasting Empires, and Not Going Viral

It's fair to say that the comedy podcast boom would not exist without Jesse Thorn. Thorn, who began doing his public radio show, The Sound of Young America, as a college student in 2000, began podcasting the often comedy-centric show in 2004. (He also taught Marc Maron how to podcast.) In 2011, The Sound of Young America became Bullseye with Jesse Thorn, and starting this April, the show will be heard on NPR stations around the country.

Thorn's podcasting network, Maximum Fun, which hosts Bullseye along with Jordan, Jesse GO!, Judge John Hodgman, and a half dozen others, continues to grow, recently adding Dave Hill's Podcasting [...]

Julie Klausner Rings in 100 Episodes of 'How Was Your Week'

Julie Klausner's excellent podcast How Was Your Week celebrated its 100th episode today with The Best Show on WFMU's Tom Scharpling serving as the episode's first guest. Maximum Fun mastermind Jesse Thorn also dropped by to serve as Julie Klausner's Mike Birbiglia and interview her about her experiences hosting the show. It's a milestone for one of the funniest, best podcasts going.

Another 10 TV Pilots the Networks Didn't Pick Up

The fall TV season kicked off this week, with NBC being the first of the major networks to launch new shows. It’s really impressive any time a TV show makes it to air because it’s such an arduous process to even get a pilot episode made, let alone getting a show picked up to series. There are so many steps at which things can completely fall apart when developing a TV show that it’s a wonder so many shows get made at all.

Because most networks develop far more pilots than they need, each network has its own back catalogue of rejected shows that never made it to air. [...]

Jesse Thorn Discusses How To Build a Podcast Empire

"Podcast empire" might read like an oxymoron to some but those some are just being regular morons. Over the last couple of years some major podcast networks have blossomed like Nerdist, Earwolf, and ACE. Jesse Thorn's Maximum Fun predates them all. This gives Thorn an important perspective on the podcast industry, which he shared with Fast Company. He explained:

Radio is a very personal medium, and podcasts are even more so because people are choosing them in a way that they don’t choose things on the radio. With talk radio, you have about five or so choices at any given time; with podcasts, you have literally tens of [...]
