The Episodes of 'SNL' Season 39, Ranked

With SNL's 39th season coming to a close, we're taking a look at the past season with a series of posts examining the highs, lows, and other memorable moments from the past eight months. Here, we look at each episode as a whole, ranking them in order of overall success and positive resonance with viewers.

Obviously comedy is subjective, and everyone watches SNL looking for different things — this list is just one of many you can find online. As far as we're concerned, things like musical guests, surprise cameos, and drama surrounding the show are less important than the plain-and-simple comedy aspects of an episode: How many sketches had [...]

Jim Parsons and Bobby Moynihan Get Nerdy in These 'SNL' Promos

Here's the promo reel for this week's SNL with host Jim Parsons and musical guest Beck, in which Parsons and Bobby Moynihan discuss laugh tracks, sock puppets, their shared nerdiness, and their mastery of non-ice division Olympic ice dancing.

Alec Baldwin: AOL Homepage Writers Are "the Dumbest Bastards in the World"

Alec Baldwin wrote about Waiting for Superman at the Huffington Post, but at the end he tacked on an amazing little anecdote about AOL and The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons. Classic Baldwin right here:

Today, on AOL's homepage, I am accused of insulting actor Jim Parsons for sending him a congratulatory gift basket, inside of which I added a card that read "Congratulations you talented, charming bastard."

I thought that was a joke. I think Parsons knew that. I think anyone on Earth could see that. Except the eighth degree, black belt idiots that compose the AOL homepage.

I'm still a loyal AOL user. In spite of [...]

'SNL' Review: Lena Dunham, Guest Stars, and Lots of Impressions

This time last year, Megh Wright and I compiled a list of 10 first-time SNL hosts we'd like to see someday. The list included Stephen Colbert (right?) and the now-sadly-late Philip Seymour Hoffman, but decidedly not Lena Dunham. She was one of the first people we discussed, and we both agreed to pass over the Girls creator/star in favor of figures who might make better hosts. I told Megh then that Dunham would be a person people like us would want to see host, but by the time the episode started, we'd quickly realize, "Oh, this wasn't as good an idea as we thought." Dunham doesn't strike me [...]

Jim Parsons to Host 'SNL' March 1st with Beck as Musical Guest

Saturday Night Live announced via Twitter today that Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be hosting the next new episode of the show, on March 1st. This will be the first time hosting the show for Parsons. His musical guest will be Beck, who will be making his seventh appearance.

This will be SNL's first episode back after a month-long break for NBC's Winter Olympics coverage. The March 1st episode will be the first for new cast member Colin Jost, who will be taking Seth Meyers's spot as Cecily Strong's "Weekend Update" co-anchor.

'SNL' Review: Jim Parsons Broadens His Range to Nerdy Guy

The alternative comedy scene has never been very kind to Jim Parsons. He's best known for playing Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory — the current leader of the pack of broad, Chuck Lorre sitcoms that are dismissed by critics and comedy snobs but beloved by industry insiders and pretty much everyone else across the country. To comedy nerds, Parsons is the ever-popular prom king who's not in any of our classes: "Who the hell is this guy, and why do people love him so damn much?" He has been showered with Emmys (winning for lead actor in 2010, 2011, and 2013), beating out Steve Carell in his final [...]

Louis C.K. and Amy Poehler Amongst Emmy Presenters

Today, the Emmys announced their first handful of presenters for the September 23rd telecast. The list is made up exclusively of funny folks: Louis C.K., Jim Parsons, Amy Poehler, Ricky Gervais, Mindy Kaling, and Ginnifer Goodwin. OK, sure, Ginnifer Goodwin isn't known for being funny but her name is Ginnifer, so you know, at least her parents had a sense of humor.
