Walton Goggins and Shea Whigham Join Danny McBride's HBO Comedy 'Vice Principals'

Last May, HBO ordered 18 episodes of a new comedy from Danny McBride and Jody Hill called Vice Principals, and today the network revealed two new cast members. According to Deadline, Justified and Sons of Anarchy alum Walton Goggins will star opposite Bride, while Boardwalk Empire's Shea Whigham has also been cast in a recurring role. Goggins will play Lee Russell, "a conniving politician who enters into an unholy alliance" with vice principal Neal Gamby (McBride). Whigham will play Ray Liptrapp, "the new husband of Gamby's ex (Busy Phillips) and frequent target of his hostility, despite being a genuine and supportive guy."

Talking to Co-Creator Jody Hill About the Final Season of 'Eastbound & Down'

After four years, HBO's Eastbound & Down ended its run last night. It was actually the second series finale for Eastbound, after co-creators Danny McBride and Jody Hill surprisingly brought the show back for a fourth season after ending it in season three last year.

I talked to Jody Hill last week about Eastbound's fourth season, the new HBO high school show he's working on with Danny McBride, and whether we'll ever see Kenny Powers again.

Danny McBride and Jody Hill Are Developing a High School Comedy for HBO

Eastbound & Down is set to debut its fourth and final season on HBO this September, but co-creators Danny McBride and Jody Hill already have another project set up at the network. HBO President Michael Lombardo told the press yesterday that McBride and Hill are developing a half-hour comedy set at a high school for the network. "They're taking a look at high school life," Lombardo says. "It's a really great, funny, quintessentially Danny and Jody idea." In addition the untitled high school project, McBride and Hill are producing a new animated series for FXX that's expected to launch early next year. Called Chozen, it follows a [...]

Jim Carrey Is Stealing an Armored Car for Lorne Michaels

Jim Carrey is in negotiations to star in a new comedy called Loomis Fargo, based on a real-life armored car heist, for producer Lorne Michaels and director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite). The movie is based on the Loomis Fargo Bank Robbery, a 1997 heist pulled off by a group of armored car guards in Charlotte, North Carolina. Carrey would play the gang's ex-military leader. Past drafts of the script have been written by Eastbound & Down duo Jody Hill and Danny McBride, as well as Up All Night creator Emily Spivey, but the draft Carrey and Hess are working from was penned by Chris Bowman and Hubbel [...]

Danny McBride Wants to Make "a Southern Godfather"

Here's the movie Danny McBride want's to make next, which would be based on a true story: "These rednecks robbed Loomis Fargo for over $17 million. And they would have gotten away with it, except they stayed in the town they were living in. They literally moved from trailers into the richest neighborhoods in town, lived like kings, bought their wives tit jobs. Jody wants to make it like a southern Godfather." Yep, I'm sold. [via]

HBO Orders 18 Episodes of Danny McBride's New Show 'Vice Principals'

Danny McBride is coming back to HBO with a brand new show. The pay cable network has ordered 18 episodes of Vice Principals, a new comedy starring McBride as a high school administrator. The show was co-created by McBride and his Eastbound & Down partner-in-crime Jody Hill, and it follows "a high school and the people who almost run it, the vice principals." HBO has yet to announce when Vice Principals will premiere or how its 18 episodes will be split up into seasons. McBride and Hill's last series, Eastbound & Downended its four-season run on HBO last year.

Jody Hill talked to us about the project last [...]

Watch a Trailer for 'Chozen,' FX's New Animated Show from the 'Eastbound & Down' and 'Archer' Teams

Here's the brand new trailer for Chozen, FX's newest comedy. It's an animated series from Eastbound & Down creators Danny McBride and Jody Hill and Archer creator Adam Reed. The show, following a gay rapper who just got out of prison, was created by former Eastbound writers' assistant Grant Dekernion and it features the voice cast of Bobby Moynihan (in the lead role of Chozen), Michael Peña, Method Man, Hannibal Buress, Kathryn Hahn, and Nick Swardson.

Danny McBride Talks 'Eastbound & Down' Season 4 and the Possibility of Season 5

It came as a surprise last year when Danny McBride and his Eastbound & Down co-creator Jody Hill signed on for a fourth season after they had always planned to end the HBO series after three. When speaking to Collider this weekend, McBride revealed that they're writing the new season now and that it begins filming this May. He summed Season 4 up by saying, "The theme of this is basically what happens to the hero after he rides off into the sunset.  That’s kind of where we’re starting this season."

While the Season 4 renewal was unexpected, McBride says he and Jody Hill will most likely be moving [...]

Jody Hill to Reboot 'Dukes of Hazzard', Kind of, Maybe

Eastbound & Down co-creator Jody Hill is currently writing a remake of Dukes of Hazzard for him to direct. However, though it's a movie set in the 70s about an outlaw duo, driving fast cars, it may not be about the Hazzards per se. Basically, Hill is writing a movie like the Dukes of Hazzard but it just as easily can become the Princes of Danger. Either way, this is pretty exciting since Hill obviously has a very distinct, very dark comedic voice and an understanding of how to draw humor out of overzealous southerners. His hope is to model it after the great Sam Peckinpah action [...]

Eastbound and Down Season Three Is Currently Being Written, Coming in 2012

Noted in the latest chapter of Vice's super-in-depth set reports from Your Highness is this tidbit: Danny McBride and Jody Hill are currently writing the third season of Eastbound and Down. The plan is to shoot it later this year for a premiere in early 2012. Where will the third season take Kenny Powers? We've already seen that these guys aren't afraid to make huge changes between seasons, so it seems like anything is in play. So we've all got that to look forward to.

'Eastbound & Down's Fourth Season Was Its Best Yet

I was skeptical when creators Danny McBride and Jody Hill opted to bring back Eastbound & Down for another season after ending the show with a well-received finale last year. It's rare for a show to come back from the dead like that and seems like a risk, but that risk paid off. Thanks to a few key cast additions (particularly standout Ken Marino) and Kenny Powers' new arenas to run amuck (a sports talk show and raising a family in suburbia), this was the most satisfying and fresh season of Eastbound & Down's four-season run.

'Eastbound & Down' Season 4 Justifies Resurrecting the Show

It came as a bit of a shock last year when Eastbound & Down was renewed by HBO for a fourth season. For years, showrunners Danny McBride and Jody Hill had been planning on ending Eastbound after its third season and they even wrote/shot/aired the last episode as a series finale. But after a few months, the duo decided to do one more season. Last year, they had wanted to show Kenny Powers as a settled-down family man with his new wife April, but actress Katy Mixon's busy schedule on CBS's Mike & Molly meant they couldn't get her full-time for their third year.

Scheduling worked out so that Mixon [...]

Danny McBride Is Making an Animated Series for FX

The FX network just bought a new animated comedy pilot produced by Danny McBride and his frequent co-conspirators Jody Hill and David Gordon Green, Deadline reports. FX is searching for a companion series to its animated hit Archer, and this could be it. The potential series, entitled Chosen, has been in development since February and will likely feature McBride in a supporting voice role. Chosen was created by Grant Dekernion, a former writer's assistant on McBride, Hill, and Green's HBO series Eastbound & Down. Dekernion would voice the lead character on Chosen, a rapper who's just been released from jail and is looking for redemption. So, take a look at that, [...]

The Perfect Misanthropy of The Foot Fist Way

It’s a rare phenomenon that a film so completely decimates an audience’s understanding of civility that it forces them to recalibrate their entire moral compass. Before Danny McBride swindled us into liking Kenny Powers, the bullying, ultra-arrogant former major league pitcher in Eastbound & Down, he forced on us a protagonist far more brutal and amoral. Fred Simmons, strip mall Taekwondo instructor and small town psychopath, intruded upon the public consciousness in 2006 with Jody Hill’s The Foot Fist Way, leaving audiences stunned and struggling to regain their internal equilibrium, as if they had been suddenly dropped into higher altitudes.

Fred Simmons’s savage presence loomed so large over the [...]
