HBO Orders Mike Judge's Silicon Valley Comedy to Series

HBO has ordered a new show from King of the Hill and Office Space mastermind Mike Judge. Deadline reports that the pay cable network has given a series order to a comedy Judge co-created with John Altschuler and Dave Krisnky (King of the Hill, The Goode Family) that was previously titled Silicon Valley. The show follows a bunch of people working in the tech industry and stars an impressive ensemble of up-and-comers including T.J. Miller, Thomas Middleditch, Josh Brener, Lindsey Broad,Christopher Evan Welch, Amanda Crew, Angela Trimbur, Zach Woods, and Kumail Nanjiani. It's been a good day for The Office alum Zach Woods, who also has a supporting role in USA's [...]

Kumail Nanjiani, Nate Corddry, Parker Posey, and More Cast in Pilots

Pilot season is in full swing, with networks ordering up new shows right and left. Here's a rundown of actors who have been cast in comedies over the past few days:

  • Nate Corddry (Studio 60, Daily Show), Matt Jones ("Badger" from Breaking Bad), and Spencer Daniels (Star Trek)  have been cast in CBS's Mom, a comedy from unfunny incarnate Chuck Lorre about a newly sober single mom (Anna Faris). Allison Janney was cast previously, meaning Mom will feature a better cast than any show Chuck Lorre's ever been within a hundred feet of.
  • Parker Posey will play the female lead in an untitled NBC comedy produced by [...]

Talking to Kumail Nanjiani About Standup, Acting, 'SNL' Auditions and More

Fans of Kumail Nanjiani have no shortage of places to find him. He's appeared in every season of IFC's Portlandia, and is a regular on TNT's legal dramedy Franklin & Bash. He also hosts the video game podcast The Indoor Kids alongside his wife Emily V. Gordon, co-hosts the weekly standup show The Meltdown in Los Angeles with Nerdist’s Jonah Ray, and just recorded his first special and CD for Comedy Central.

I recently got the chance to chat with him about acting, touring, and auditioning for SNL.

You recently recorded your first hour special in Austin. Does it have a name yet?

There's a couple names we're kicking [...]

Kumail Nanjiani Answers Questions from Teen and Tween Girls for 'Rookie Mag'

Here's comedian Kumail Nanjiani, of Portlandia and Franklin & Bash fame, participating in Rookie Magazine's "Ask a Grown Man" series and  doling out advice to young girls. He's got some good tips to hand out, but someone needs to give Kumail Nanjiani some advice on theme park behavior because, as evidenced by the video, he seems to be in some sort of theme park crisis.

With Comedy Bang Bang Gone, What's L.A.'s Next Big Stand-up Show?

2012 was the end of an era for the Los Angeles comedy scene, as Comedy Bang Bang, the influential weekly stand-up showcase co-created by Scott Aukerman, ended its ten year run earlier this month. Comedy Bang Bang (originally titled Comedy Death-Ray) will live in on in the form of the popular podcast and IFC show of the same name, but the live show's impact upon the L.A. comedy scene (and the comedy world at large) is endless. Comedy Bang Bang first started in 2002 when the term "alternative comedy" actually meant something, years before Zach Galifianakis was a major movie star or Louis C.K. was the country's leading [...]

Kumail Nanjiani Would Never Be in The Thing

Ladies, maybe get a guy to help you play this video of Kumail Nanjiani doing standup on Conan last night, because the Koran says women are really bad at using the internet. Luckily the Koran also says that Kumail is really funny and you'll like watching him. Yes, it does! Page 398! Look it up if you don't believe me! (And that's how you convert people to a new religion.)

Comedians Steve Agee (The Sarah Silverman Program), Kumail Nanjiani (Franklin & Bash), and Steve Little (Eastbound & Down) are all playing supporting roles in Craig Robinson's untitled NBC pilot, produced by Greg Daniels and written by Office writer Owen Ellickson. Nanjiani tweeted this photo of the full cast yesterday, with the new actors joining previously-announced cast members Amanda Lund (bottom left), Amandla Stenberg (bottom, middle), and Larenz Tate (back row to the right of Robinson). The pilot stars Robinson as a musician adjusting to his new life as a music teacher at an inner city middle school. This was already a show worth looking forward to for [...]

The Meltdown is a weekly stand-up showcase held at NerdMelt in Los Angeles since 2011, hosted by Ray and Nanjiani and produced by Emily V. Head on over to The Meltdown Tumblr for info on how you can attend the taping on February 13th. Basing a stand-up TV show on a popular live stand-up show is [...]

Kumail Nanjiani Investigates the Real Portlandia in His 'Portlandia' Web Series

Here's the debut episode of Kumail Tours Portlandia, a new Portlandia web series starring amazingly-funny comedian and Portlandia regular Kumail Nanjiani, in which he walks around Portland, Oregon, trying to find real people and things similar to those on the show. In the first installment, he visits a feminist book store called "In Other Words" that was the partial inspiration for Portlandia's "Women & Women First." Future episodes will see Nanjiani visiting a chicken retirement home, the Portland Steampunk Society, and a vegan strip club. It should be pretty tough to find the real mayor of Portland's secret reggae band, though.

Talking with Jonah Ray About His New Stand-Up Album, the Nerdist Podcast and His Aversion to Niche Comedy

As co-host of the Nerdist podcast, one of the best and most popular comedy podcasts going, Jonah Ray wields a lot of power in the comedy community, but the show, which he hosts with Chris Hardwick and Matt Mira, is just one of the many projects he currently has his hands in. Ray is also a writer for The Soup, as well as an accomplished standup who hosts the awesome weekly show The Meltdown along with buddy Kumail Nanjiani in the back room of the L.A. comic book store Meltdown Comics.
