We've reached the midpoint of SNL's 39th season — one that has optimistically been called a "transitional year," but one more commonly known as "the year the shit hit the fan with that whole black woman issue." Despite the fact that the bulk of the SNL coverage in fall 2013 has zeroed in on the show's diversity controversy, SNL has given us plenty of other things to talk about, from new cast members and emerging stars on the show, to surprise cameos and celebrity hosts who defied our expectations — in good and bad ways.
Unfortunately, few of those topics have gotten much ink in fall 2013 (outside of sites [...]
Lady Gaga is set to do double-duty as host and musical guest of the November 16th episode of SNL, NBC announced today . This will be her first time hosting and third time doing music on the show. Rumors about Gaga hosting SNL surfaced in September, but it's now official. While she hasn't hosted before or acted much, Lady Gaga appeared in a bunch of sketches during both of her times as musical guest.
Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson will host the following episode, set for November 23rd, with musical guest HAIM. SNL is live this weekend with host Kerry Washington and musical guest Eminem.
Take a ride down memory lane in Weird Al's brightly-painted, frantically bouncing jalopy. The video for "Polka Face," his latest polka medley of pop hits from the last few years, features robot pole-dancer Britney Spears and Lady Antebellum drowning some bowling alley mice in her tears. So, pretty normal for Weird Al.
Huzzah! Looks like I won't have to burn my Lady Gaga CDs (just kidding. Do they even still make CDs?) because Weird Al's Lady Gaga parody was approved by Mother Monster herself. As Al explained on his blog yesterday, "Apparently the fact that she didn’t approve it was news to Lady Gaga herself! Gaga’s manager has now admitted that he never forwarded my parody to Gaga – she had no idea at all." Cut to Gaga's now-ex-manager sprinting through the forest with a thirty-minute head start.
In case you hadn't noticed, there have been a lot more music stars on SNL lately. Not merely performing as musical guests or popping up in a sketch here or there, as we've seen on the show every week, but pop stars getting booked as host in addition to their musical guest gig. What was once a rare event with triple threats like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake occasionally pulling double duty in the early 2000s (and once by Paul Simon in 1976) has now become a fairly common practice. The last three seasons have seen hosts + musical guests Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber, Bruno [...]
Lady Gaga is returning to Saturday Night Live this fall to make her third appearance on the show, TV Line reports, and there's a chance that she might even host. TV Line says the part about her hosting is a "rumor," but the part about her being musical guest again is not. Gaga previously served as musical guest in a 2009 episode hosted by Ryan Reynolds and in a 2011 one hosted by Justin Timberlake, both of which she acted in. SNL's 39th season begins on September 28th with five new cast members joining up as featured players in the wake of Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, and [...]
EW reports the Lady Gaga guests on The Simpsons this coming season; recorded yesterday, the singer's cameo will air next spring. Reportedly Gaga stops by to (unsuccessfully) try and dance Lisa's self-esteem out of the gutter, in addition to conducting a train powered by "a giant flame-shooting bustier," throwing a flash mob and, of course, kissing Marge. Everyone on the planet knows the only way to soothe Lisa's sadness is to glue hundreds of unwashed seashells to her parents' car, Gaga, though I will accept hundreds of unwashed seashells glued to a really fabulous hat, since that's where 80% of the jokes are going to go anyway.
For someone who dresses so ridiculously, Lady Gaga sure takes herself seriously. So seriously, in fact, that she refused to give her blessing to Weird Al's new single and parody of "Born This Way," "Perform This Way." Which is her right, sure, but she also insisted that he record the song before she made her decision — reading the lyrics wasn't enough.
So after spending his own money to record the song — the sales of which were to be given to the Human Rights Campaign — she said no without any explanation. Al recounts the whole ordeal on his blog:
Lada Gaga is the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live this weekend, and she and Kenan Thompson recorded promos for the upcoming episode. There's a broom, a flashlight, and some vomiting, but all unrelated to each other.
It's been 11 years since the release of Zoolander, and Ben Stiller and Company are still pressing ahead with plans to make a sequel. The latest news is that pop star Lady Gaga has been offered £3 million (or $3.9 million in American) to make her comedic debut as Derek Zoolander's love interest, according to the Telegraph. The sequel, to be written and directed by Stiller's Tropic Thunder cohort Justin Theroux, is targeted for a 2014 release. Lady Gaga would play a lady woman who gets caught in a love triangle between Derek Zoolander and Owen Wilson's Hansel, and Stiller said last year that Will Ferrell is [...]
A worthy successor to "Dick In A Box" and "Motherlover," on Saturday we found out Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg's greasy lotharios are down to knock construction boots and white socks with Lady Gaga in SNL's "3-Way: The Golden Rule." And if somebody's hands or wiener happen to stray too far, the social etiquette of the ménage à trois allows for more than little leeway/copious amounts of helicopter dick. Everything about this video was spot on: Gaga's nails and bikes shorts, the dancers on the bus, how it picked up five minutes after "Motherlover" left off and guest starred a deeply satisfied Patricia Clarkson. So as of today, [...]
SNL is wrapping up the current season on May 21st with a couple of heavy hitters: Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga. This will come two weeks after Tina Fey hosts on May 7th. The host for the episode on the 14th has yet to be announced; it was originally supposed to be Steve Carell, but he had to cancel due to a movie's shooting schedule. But I hear his replacement is pretty great, too.
