Review Roundup: 'This Is 40' Is Judd Apatow's Least Popular Film with Critics Yet

This Is 40, Judd Apatow's fourth film as a director, hits theaters today, and it's receiving mixed reaction from critics and proving less popular with reviewers than anything he's directed so far. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie scored a 52%, compared to 68, 90, and 86 for Funny People, Knocked Up, and The 40 Year-Old Virgin, respectively. On Rotten Tomatoes's less popular little brother Metacritic, it received a 58/100, compared to 60, 85, and 73 for those three same films. And you thought Judd's Twitter account was crappy before. (Zinged.) It's pretty great how she treats the interview like she's uncovering a major conspiracy. Like Judd Apatow tweeting while shitting is the Watergate of people doing something while shitting. Always a supportive husband, Judd tweeted the below photo just so it was completely clear where his tweets were being sent from. Truth in comedy, I guess.

- Reno 911! Star Niecy Nash will appear in an early episode of The New Girl next season as woman who steals Jess's likely ribbon and hearts covered purse. To take the shenanigan level up another notch, this twee purse thief will be a prostitute. Basically, it will be Jess's chance to meet her polar opposite. Also, Leslie Mann will appear as a shot girl in the episode where the gang celebrates the removal of Schmidt's penis cast. Lastly, the perpetually getting sitcom work David Walton will be reoccurring as Jess's definitely tall, probably boneheaded love interest.

The LA Times has some new info and the first image from Judd Apatow's next movie, This is 40. The movie will feature Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann revisiting their characters from Knocked Up. As for the plot: "Pete’s music label is struggling and Debbie’s vanity business, a dress shop staffed by the comely Desi (Megan Fox) and the awkward Jodi (Charlyne Yi), needs to help cover the household budget." Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann Make Their 'The View' Debuts

Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann sat down with the ladies of The View this morning to promote This Is 40. In part 2 (embedded below), Apatow talks about submitting jokes to Jay Leno when he was 19 and getting turned down. Apatow also mentioned on Twitter today that his first job was working for The View's Whoopi Goldberg in 1986 as an intern on the first Comic Relief special at age 16. Leslie Mann Wrote Her Big '40 Year-Old Virgin' Scene and Made Her Own Fake Vomit

"I actually had a whole different ending [for the scene in The 40-Year-Old Virgin where Leslie Mann throws up on Steve Carell]. They get pulled over by the cops, and in the last second, she reveals that she has a gun under the seat. And Leslie said to me, 'No, I really think I need to throw up in his face.' And then she went off and made her own vomit out of strawberry yogurt and some sort of breakfast cereal. And it turned out to be one of the biggest laughs of the movie."

Jason Bateman, Zac Efron, Leslie Mann, Goldie Hawn to Play a Mourning Jewish(?) Family

This Is Where I Leave You is the story of four siblings who come back to their old home to sit shiva for their deceased father. The increasingly un-Jewish looking Bateman, Efron, and Mann are in talks to play three of these siblings and Hawn will be the mother. Jonathan Tropper, the author who wrote the original novel, is adapting the film for Adam Shankman (Rock of Ages and Hairspray) to direct. Considering Shankman's background, I expect a festive version of the Mourner's Kaddish and rip-roaring dance number where the cast saunters around the house covering mirrors.

The Screenplay to Judd Apatow's 'This is 40' Is Online and It's Really Long

Universal has posted the entire screenplay to Judd Apatow's upcoming movie This is 40  on its "For Your Consideration" awards site (via Bleeding Cool). You can click open a full PDF of the massive, 146-page script here. Some clips from Jon Brion's score for the film are also available on the site. Apatow's movies are known for leaning heavily on improvisation, so most of the jokes in the script will probably be different from those in the final version, but the story's the same so you should probably avoid reading the script if you don't want to completely spoil the movie for yourself. New 'This Is 40' Trailer Asks: Who is Tom Petty?

The first This Is 40 trailer had people saying, "This is sad." With this trailer, they'll be saying: "This is funny," and "This is filled with fun cameos," and "Now, this is 40." Overall, it's a very heartening trailer that looks packed with all you expect from an Apatow film. No word yet on runtime but since it's Judd, we're probably looking at about 12 hours. Good news is then the overly schmaltzy third act will only be three hours long.

If you answered humor with a healthy dose of pathos and also an even healthier dose of Paul Rudd's grundle, well, you're going to really like this first trailer for Judd Apatow's sort-of sequel to Knocked Up, This Is 40. We still have a long time to wait for its December 21st release date, but this is a fun first taste of the comedy powerhouse's fourth movie as writer/director. What say you? Not enough jokes? Not enough Rudd gooch? Or the perfect amount of both?
