'Live from New York' Co-Author Jim Miller on How 'SNL' Has Changed and Stayed the Same

"I know that there were a lot of people, veteran SNL watchers, me, even, that thought that there might have been more of a house cleaning. And I think that at the end of the day, Lorne understands development arcs, and for all we know, there might have been something in a particular sketch that Lorne saw of somebody, and he may have been ready to let them go. And he saw something in one sketch and thought, Okay, wait, if they can do that, that's worth holding on to. We're going to get them to the next level. … You know, it’s not always, Well, they didn't have a [...]

Updated Edition of 'Live from New York' Book Will Be Available This September

Since its publication in 2003, Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller's oral history book Live from New York has served as the quintessential SNL bible for fans and students of TV history alike, and according to Miller, the book is currently being updated to include all the post-2003 SNL history the original edition missed out on. Covering the period from 2002 to the present, the update takes on the show’s engagement with recent politics, the rise of Lonely Island, and the internet’s effect on both the players and the general reception of the show. It features interviews from [...]

The new and extended version of Tom Shales and James Miller's SNL oral history book Live from New York isn't out until September 9th, but in the meantime THR has released a few exclusive excerpts from the book all about the show's more recent political satire, from how Tina Fey's Sarah Palin was born to why Robert Smigel's last TV Funhouse segment was rejected to Fred Armisen and Jay Pharoah's Obama impersonations. Here's Horatio Sanz on the opposing political sensibilities of former head writers Jim Downey and Seth Meyers:

I don't think the show itself has ever let its freak flag fly in the last 20 [...]
