'New Girl's Season Two Was Great, No Thanks to the Parents

New Girl concluded their excellent second season by making one of the world's most awful songs briefly profound.

"Where do we come from? Where do we go?" mumbled Nick Miller in the closing moments of last night's season finale. He was paraphrasing "Cotton Eye Joe," which he justifiably denied enjoying earlier in the episode, betrayed by his involuntary fistpumping. The first question was something that was on the minds of all of the main characters all season long, influencing their decisions as they traversed through the murky, angsty wilderness that is living as a late 20s/early 30s year old with slapstick, pregnant pauses, and a lot of yelling, sometimes [...]

Ode To Funny Ladies Of L.A.

Because they're all friends in real life and experiencing real career success and make your friends look like drifters you picked up in the line for the White Castle bathroom, Paper Mag profiled these comedic actresses living in L.A. The talented ladies include Lucy Punch, Maria Thayer and Community's Gillian Jacobs, whose character Britta is so spot-on, I want to make a new awards show and corresponding statute just so I can personally present her with it. "I don't get the excuse to sit on my butt and wait for the phone to ring anymore. I have proven to myself that I can make this happen on my [...]

Top Comedy Showrunners Just Doing Some Roundtabling

The Hollywood Reporter brought together showrunners Carter Bays (How I Met Your Mother), Bill Prady (The Big Bang Theory), Liz Meriwether (New Girl), Paul Lieberstein (The Office), Steve Levitan (Modern Family), and Emily Spivey (Up All Night) to have a roundtable discussion. (Though, the gang actually shared three roundtables. Also, for some reason they were arranged by who did or did not wear glasses.) They address all the many stresses of the job, like deciding on pen color:

Liz Meriwether: I was unprepared for the leadership; people are looking to you for everything, and you’re pretending to be an expert on, say, props. It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done. But I haven’t had a baby.

Zooey Deschanel to Star in Liz Meriwether's Chicks and Dicks on Fox?

Zooey Deschanel is in talks to star in Fox's pilot for Chicks and Dicks (title tentative for obvious reasons), a new show written by Liz Meriwether, who also penned No Strings Attached. It would be "a young ensemble comedy about the sexual politics of men and women. It centers on Jessica, the role Deschanel is eyeing, an optimistic but unlucky-in-love elementary school teacher who, after her most recent break-up, moves out of her apartment with her ex and moves in with a trio of juvenile guys."

"Funny people are flawed people"

On the one hand, this TV season has had more sitcoms staring women than any in recent memory, which is good! On the other hand, all those funny ladies on TV have been subject to a pretty unfair level of scrutiny and blowback, as the characters they portray are generally flawed people and don't do a great job of representing their entire demographic. Because, you know, they're not supposed to. It's a pretty shitty thing, and while Lena Dunham and Girls have borne the brunt of the flawed funny ladies blowback lately, Zooey Deschanel's character on New Girl got her fair share of criticism as well, especially in the [...]
