Listen to Woody Allen Talk About Midnight in Paris in the 1960s

So it turns out Woody Allen basically figured out the plot of Midnight in Paris in the late 1960s. That's how it seems when you listen to this footage of him doing standup from back in the day, anyhow. It's kind of amazing that a concept like this can stay in the back of someone's mind for 50 years before it becomes a movie. It's a good thing he never actually got punched by Ernest Hemingway, because the ensuing brain damage would surely render that impossible.

The WGA Original Screenplay Nominees Are Nearly All Comedies

WGA's big-screen announcements are out, joining the small-screen nomination list released a few weeks back. The Original Screenplay category in particular is almost totally comedy-dominated, with Bridesmaids, 50/50, Midnight in Paris and Young Adult all getting nods. Woody Allen took to the pages of the New York Times today to tell the story of how he came up with the name of Midnight in Paris. It involves a man named Philo Cubbage, Van Gogh's other ear, and Bud Hartoonian.
