Alan Menken Says a 'Mrs. Doubtfire' Musical Is in the Works

The rumored Mrs. Doubtfire sequel might not be moving forward, but now it looks like the 1993 film is getting the stage musical treatment. Entertainment Weekly confirmed with Alan Menken — who wrote music for Disney classics like The Little Mermaid and Aladdin — that he's composing music for an upcoming Doubtfire musical, David Zippel (Hercules) is writing the lyrics, and Harvey Fierstein is writing the book. "It's going very well, it's in its early stages, and that's probably all I can say," Menken told EW. "We're really enjoying working on it."

Mrs. Doubtfire Is Going to Kill You

We should have known when she/he/she/he said, "I can hip-hop, be-bop, dance till ya drop, and yo yo, make a wicked cup of cocoa." That is psychopath talk. She rhymed "cocoa" with "yo yo." I think I would have preferred serial murder. If she/he/she/he were a killer, her/his/her/his catchphrase would be, "Will I set you on fire? No doubt." (Get it? Because like her/his name has both the word "fire" and "doubt" in it, so I used it in a different, villainous way. Nope? Me neither.)

Pierce Brosnan Tells Conan About Working with Robin Williams on 'Mrs. Doubtfire'

On last night's Conan, Pierce Brosnan looked back on his time working with Robin Williams in 1993's Mrs. Doubtfire and told a story about the "beautiful" shrimp choking scene that made the Heimlich maneuver famous. Brosnan is too classy to get into the dirty details, but his attempt at impersonating Williams's off-camera wisecracks is certainly admirable.

A 'Mrs. Doubtfire' Sequel Is in the Works with Robin Williams Attached

THR reports that a sequel to the 1993 Robin Williams-in-drag comedy Mrs. Doubtfire is currently in the works at Fox 2000, with Williams attached to the project as well as original director Chris Columbus. While the studio has been trying to get a sequel made since Bonnie Hunt was brought on to write a script in 2001, this new update involves Elf and The Haunted Mansion writer David Berenbaum attached to the current script, and "Williams and Columbus are attached and hopeful about the outcome." No word yet on whether any of the original cast will be returning with Williams for the sequel.
