This Week in Web Videos: 'Neighbors'

Do what you want all the time and, even when you're not funny, chances are you'll learn something about how to be funnier. That's the gist of the advice Jackie Jennings gives and after watching her great series Neighbors, it's pretty clear that this strategy works. So, learn about the science of comedy by taking some classes and reading some stuff (ummmm, this column much?!) and then, once you've got an idea that you believe in, don't listen to the haters and the blowhards and just make what you want. If you've got talent, seeds of your ability will be present in your earliest attempts at originality. If you [...]

How Nicholas Stoller Grounds 'Neighbors', 'Get Him to the Greek', and His Other Comedies in Real Life

Early in Neighbors, a new comedy by Nicholas Stoller, Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne), stuck in their carefully planned adult home with their new baby, Facetime with their single party-girl friend (Carla Gallo) while she prepares to attend, attends, and comes down from the “craziest rave she’s ever been to.” Throughout the scene, when they receive the calls we see the familiar shape of the iPhone appear in a corner of the screen and Gallo’s face smushed into the rectangular frame, giving the viewer the sensation of actually Facetimeing with the character. The structure and style of this interaction seems to encompass all of the visual and dramatic [...]

Watch Seth Rogen and Zac Efron in the Trailer for 'Neighbors'

Here's the brand new trailer for the movie Neighbors, a new comedy out May 9, 2014. Completely unrelated to the 1981 Dan Aykroyd-John Belushi bomb that shares the same name, Neighbors stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a couple with a new baby whose lives are ruined when a fraternity house (led by Zac Efron) moves in next door to them. Directed by Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek), the movie features a supporting cast that includes Dave Franco, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Lisa Kudrow, Jake Johnson, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Mantzoukas, Brian Huskey, Bobby Moynihan, and Jerrod Carmichael.

'Neighbors' Had a Huge Opening Weekend and Its Audience Was Shockingly Mostly Female

The Seth Rogen-Zac Efron comedy Neighbors came out this weekend, earning $49 million at the box office, the highest-grossing opening weekend for a live-action comedy this year. Surprisingly, women made up 53% of the audience for the film this weekend, which isn't exactly what you'd expect from a raucous, R-rated comedy about a war between a family and a frat house. Sure, Rose Byrne, Neighbors' female lead, has a huge part and a lot of funny moments and good-looking guy Zac Efron is in it, but it is still a pretty dude-centric to go over so well with the opposite gender.

Seth Rogen Wants to Make a 'Neighbors' Sequel Happen

With the box office success of Seth Rogen's newest movie Neighbors, the comedy film star said at a Warner Bros. panel over the weekend that he's currently "having a lot of discussions" to make a sequel with his producing partners Evan Goldberg and James Weaver. Rogen also emphasized that the trio will continue to specialize in "low budget R-rated comedies" following Rogen's decision to cut Neighbors' budget in half to $18 million to ward off studio exec interference: "At least we didn't make a movie we hate and had to work on for a year and a half." At the panel, Rogen also confirmed that he's currently [...]
