Scott Aukerman on 'Comedy Bang! Bang!' Season 4 and Saying Goodbye to Reggie

The one thing we do know about Reggie Watts’ replacement on IFC’s Comedy Bang! Bang! is the new sidekick will be a human being.

That is all the offbeat talk show’s host and creator Scott Aukerman is willing to divulge in the wake of news that Watts, Comedy Bang! Bang!’s bandleader for the past three seasons, is leaving in March to become bandleader of the new Late Late Show with James Corden on CBS.

We’ll still have plenty of Watts and Aukerman’s hilariously awkward banter to enjoy in the first half of Comedy Bang! Bang! season 4, which premiered last week. And Aukerman promises a remarkable mid-season sendoff.

After that, [...]

'ANiMASHUPS': Exploring the Possibilities of the Animated Podcast

For my money, there are few things on this big, blue marble we call Earth more awe-inspiring and superlative than the amalgamation of comedy and animation. Screw off, peanut butter and chocolate. Hit the bricks, mortar and bricks! Take a breather, unstable sociopaths and boxes of abandoned puppies. The good folks from Jash and VPN obviously agree, which is where ANiMASHUPS, their series of animated podcasts, comes in.

ANiMASHUPS, which first appeared on Jash’s sister network the Video Podcast Network back in mid-February of 2013, has released over 58 videos to date and features material taken from over eight different partnered podcasts. We were lucky enough to speak with the [...]

Strapped In, Helmet On: Tom Scharpling Talks the New 'Best Show'

The last thing listeners heard during the final episode of The Best Show on WFMU was Black Flag’s “Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie” — a sign-off but not exactly a goodbye. For several months, fans of the program wondered what host Tom Scharpling would do next. The answer is a revived Best Show, debuting soon on TheBestShow.net rather than the New Jersey radio station on which it aired for more than a decade.

The original Best Show combined the call-in talk format with written segments by Scharpling and comedy partner (slash indie rock drummer) Jon Wurster. In the course of a typical episode, Scharpling would hang up on a series [...]

Inside A Special Thing and 'Never Not Funny' with Matt Belknap

Matt Belknap has had many aspirations. As a teenager he hoped to make it in Hollywood after reading a Spike Lee book on screenwriting. After attempting to make films, he carved his own path by starting A Special Thing message board, originally designed as a place where Tenacious D fans could congregate. But AST morphed into an alternative comedy hub where fans and comedians alike could post and discuss comedy. Belknap soon started A Special Thing Podcast and since 2006, Belknap has been cohosting the weekly podcast, Never Not Funny, with one of his favorite comedians, Jimmy Pardo.

Along with his cohosting duties, Belknap cofounded A Special Thing Records, which [...]

The Year in Comedy Podcasts

2014. The year the podcast came back! What? Did it ever leave? Well, no. But with major ink from hoary old analog readers like New York Magazine and The Washington Post trumpeting “the return of the podcast!” it seems mainstream has finally figured out podcasting is a thing. Podcast impresario Kevin Smith even featured Justin Long portraying a podcaster who is transformed — painfully, and against his will — into a walrus in the feature film Tusk this year.

It seems that comedy isn’t the only main driver for the podcast medium any more. This year saw the rise of “must listen” shows like Startup, a podcast about a [...]

Elizabeth Laime and the Lessons Learned From Podcasting

Elizabeth Laime knows all too well that all good things must totally come to an end. Her flagship podcast, Totally Laime, is winding down its five-year run with a final flurry of episodes, the last of which will drop on January 23rd. It's shaping up to be a fond farewell that won't leave fans of Laime and her cohost/husband, Andy Rosen, completely empty handed, considering that a mini-empire of Totally spinoff podcasts are still going strong. We talked to Laime about how luck, laziness and low expectations can somehow be the perfect recipe for success.

Well, it's the final countdown. How are you feeling?

You know, I'm pretty excited. [...]
