Dissecting the Madness That Is 'Trapped in the Closet': Chapters 23-33

When journalists write about R. Kelly's musical dramedy Trapped in the Closet, they tend to throw out a high-brow literary reference to demonstrate that they are intelligent human beings that just so happen to be exploring a subtlety free, it's-so-dumb-it's-brilliant work of art. I don't believe in that, but I must say that after chapters 23 through 33 out of the planned 85 chapter series aired over the holiday weekend, it's obvious that Trapped's biggest influence is Laurence Sterne's 18th century novel The Life and Opinions of Tristam Shandy, Gentleman.

IFC is resurrecting R. Kelly's comedic hip hopera Trapped in the Closet, with at least 20 new installments on the way. The oft-parodied series is returning from a five-year hiatus on November 23rd, with "Chapter 23" debuting on IFC that evening at 9/8c, following a digitally remastered version of the original Trapped in the Closet videos. I must have missed a massive online campaign to bring Trapped in the Closet back a la Arrested Development. That's how this happened, right?

It's a shame Gary Oldman (aka the anti-Henny Youngman) chose to read this excerpt from Soula Coaster in his fancy British voice instead of his often-used villainous British voice. Or maybe he could have read it as Sid Vicious! Or whatever that voice was in The Fifth Element! There are just so many great options! This better be a weekly segment, Gary and Jimmy.
