The latest '80s comedy Hollywood is trying to remake is Private Benjamin, and Rebel Wilson has landed the lead role, The Tracking Board reports. Wilson will play a female military recruit who finds the Army to be harder than she expected. A director has yet to be attached to the project.
The original Private Benjamin, released in 1980, starred Goldie Hawn and was one of the highest-grossing movies of that year. The film consistently ends up on lists of the greatest comedies of all-time, like the American Film Institute's list of top 100 comedies (ranked 82). Anna Faris had previously been cast as the lead in the remake, [...]
Super Fun Night creator and star Rebel Wilson stopped by Conan last night, where she told one quite inappropriate One Direction joke and railed against the no-fun censors at ABC. She also played a dolphin who takes an interest in Andy. And yes, she's in a chicken costume the entire time, and no, they don't even acknowledge it in either of these clips. Below, she talks about her musical theater origins and her insufficient Hollywood billboard.
Last night during the MTV Movie Awards, Aubrey Plaza ran onstage and tried to grab Will Ferrell's "Comedic Genius award" out of his hands during his acceptance speech (at the 1:53 mark in the above video). She had the title to her upcoming movie The To Do List written in marker on her chest, and quickly returned to her seat after about ten seconds of trying to take Ferrell's award. MTV is claiming that the stunt was unplanned and that Plaza was removed from the premises after the incident, but she did appear in the audience later in the show so that could be bullshit. Watch the video [...]
Movieweb reports that discussions are taking place for a sequel to the best collegiate a cappella comedy of 2012, Pitch Perfect. Universal has yet to make an official announcement on Pitch Perfect 2, but one of the first movie's stars, Skylar Astin told Movieweb that he and fellow cast member Rebel Wilson have each taken meetings with the studio about a potential sequel. The first Pitch Perfect , written by 30 Rock's Kay Cannon and also starring Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Adam DeVine, was released in October and performed well with critics and at the box office. So, for those of you who [...]
Remember when Rebel Wilson was on Jimmy Kimmel Live promoting Bachelorette and she was talking about the movie and, like, how she worked with Kirsten Dunst and how that was so exciting because Bring It On is her favorite movie that she just asked Kirsten if she remembered its most famous parts and Kirsten did? That was awesome! Also awesome, as she explains below, was her childhood love of Kris Kross and that documentary Best in Show.
It's only a couple weeks into 2014, but it's looking like a good year for Rebel Wilson, who already has two film roles in the works. According to Deadline, Wilson has been cast as a night guard in the upcoming Night at the Museum sequel by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant as well as the "sharp-tongued roommate" to Amanda Seyfried in He's F***ing Perfect, which was written by Adam McKay's former assistant Lauryn Kahn and produced by McKay and Ferrell's Gary Sanchez Productions. Wilson was also honored on Forbes'"30 Under 30" list last week, so hopefully by next month she'll land 10 more film [...]
Rebel Wilson's new sitcom, Super Fun Night, premiered on ABC last night and pulled in 8.2 million viewers. That gives it the second highest premiere ratings for a comedy this season, following Robin Williams's new show, The Crazy Ones over at CBS. Super Fun Night had the good fortune to follow ABC's smash hit Modern Family, which had 10.9 million viewers overall. If the new show keeps up those numbers, it's likely to make it through its first season, despite mostly middling reviews.
The Critics' Choice Movie Awards were held last night, and Judd Apatow was honored with the "Louis XIII Genius Award," which is sponsored by the cognac brand Louis XIII and not the famed French king. It's an absurdly-lofty name for this particular award, but there are a hell of a lot people who are fewer qualified for it than Apatow. Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids star Rebel Wilson presented Apatow with the statue, introducing him by reading the following speech off a piece of paper:
Critics' Choice Louis the XIII Genius Award speech, written by Judd Apatow. But don't say it's written by Judd …. OK. Maybe I wrote this. World [...]
Two Bridesmaids alums, actress Rebel Wilson and co-writer Annie Mumolo, just sold their own movie projects to major studios. Deadlinebroke the news that Rebel Wilson sold a pitch to Universal for an untitled comedy that she will write, produce, and act in. No plot details are known at this time. Wilson is on the rise after appearances in Bridesmaids, Bachelorette, and most recently, Pitch Perfect. In the second Bridesmaids-related movie sale of the week, Kristen Wiig's writing partner Annie Mumolo, with whom she scored Oscar nominations for Bridesmaids' screenplay, sold a movie too. The project, based on the life story of Joy Mangano, follows a single mom trying [...]
This seems fun. It will undoubtedly be compared to Bridesmaids because that's how things work but it looks a lot more like Very Bad Things mixed with The Hangover. The cast is solid: Rebel Wilson playing against type as the proper bride, Lizzy Caplan as the sarcastic one (the brunette), Isla Fisher as the wild party girl (the redhead), and Kirsten Dunst as the perfect one (the blonde). Also, there appears to be a Lizzy Caplan-Adam Scott rekindling, which hopefully takes up 60% of the movie. Maybe the twist will be that Scott and Caplan's characters have to cater the wedding and this is actually the long-rumored Party Down movie.
Business magazine Forbes released its annual "30 Under 30" list today, and the list is full of comedy people, as usual. Comedians and comedy writers who made the list this year include Megan Amram (26, Parks and Rec writer), Lena Dunham (27, Girls), Dave Franco (28, 21 Jump Street), Mickey Myer (29, cofounder of JASH), Aubrey Plaza (29, Parks and Rec), Issa Rae (28, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl), Heather Regnier (28, UCB), Simon Rich (29, SNL), Jason Ruiz (28, Murder Police), and Rebel Wilson (27, Super Fun Night). Dunham, Rich, and Wilson made last year's 30 Under 30 alongside comedy folk like Aziz Ansari and [...]
Rebel Wilson seems destined to become a major star. The Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect scene-stealer is incredibly funny and talented, and happy to throw herself headfirst into things like her MTV Movie Awards hosting gig earlier this year. And in Super Fun Night, which premieres tonight on ABC, the Australian actress gets her first starring U.S. gig in a show she created herself. Unfortunately, it’s not going to be the thing that makes her a star.
Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson has just been tapped by MTV to be the host of the network's 22nd annual MTV Movie Awards next year. The ceremony is set to air on April 14th and sees the trend of MTV using a comedian to host the awards show continue. Russell Brand hosted last time and was preceded by Jason Sudeikis, Aziz Ansari, Andy Samberg, Mike Myers, and Sarah Silverman before him. Prior to that, the MTV Movie Awards were in a weird era where they hired people like Jessica Alba and Lindsay Lohan to host. Rebel Wilson, who hails from Australia, has been keeping especially busy [...]
Why are they playing "Get Ur Freak On" in the background? The song's awesome and we always need people to tell us what to get on, but there has to be a more recent freak command-based tune. If not, what do we have Nicki Minaj for? For that British monster voice thing? Pssh. Still, this is great and at some point Rebel just yells for no reason. [Via]
