How Richard Linklater Uses Naturalism to Find Comedy

Richard Linklater is having what can probably be considered the most visible period of his career with the release of his highly anticipated and equally regarded Boyhood. This marks the first time that the box office success and critical success of one of his projects coalesced into a true major cultural moment, prompting numerous career retrospectives and think-pieces. Common take on Richard Linklater is that his filmography is defined by unpredictability, never bound to one particular label and always willing to try new things as a director. Just when you think you can track his Rohmer-influenced style through Slacker and the Before Trilogy, you realize his name is [...]

Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis to Star in a Richard Linklater Film

Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis are teaming up to star in another movie together with Richard Linklater attached to direct. Vulture reports via Cannes that the duo have signed on to star in an adaptation of the wonderfully titled Daniel Asa Rose memoir Larry's Kidney: Being the True Story of How I Found Myself in China with My Black Sheep Cousin and His Mail-Order Bride, Skirting the Law to Get Him a Transplant–and Save His Life. Ferrell will play Rose, the one who goes on the kidney hunt for his cousin Larry (Galifianakis). Galifianakis and Ferrell last starred together in the 2012 political comedy The Campaign. [...]

Richard Linklater's Bernie Looks Like Good Wholesome Murderin' Fun

Here's the first trailer for Richard Linklater's dark comedy Bernie, based on the true story of a Texas murder. Jack Black is fun as a charming, murderous assistant funeral director, Shirley MacLaine is awesomely cranky, and Matthew McConaughey is…also in the movie. Bernie comes out April 27, which could be enough time to befriend a mean old widow, shoot her and stuff her in your freezer, if you want to really relate to the protagonist's journey.

Richard Linklater Is No Longer Directing the 'Incredible Mr. Limpet' Remake

After over a year and a half of being officially attached to the project, Richard Linklater has announced that he will no longer be directing the long-in-the-works remake of The Incredible Mr. Limpet based on the 1964 Don Knotts film of the same name. Coming Soon reports that Linklater is exiting Mr. Limpet to focus on That's What I'm Talking About, which he's described as a "spiritual sequel" to his 1993 film Dazed and Confused.

Since Linklater signed on to the Mr. Limpet remake last year, the project was beginning to take shape with Zach Galifianakis playing the titular role along with Jon Hamm, Josh Gad, [...]

Richard Linklater Is Remaking 'The Incredible Mr. Limpet'

Back in 2011, The LA Times reported that filmmaker Richard Linklater (Before Midnight, Dazed and Confused) was the top choice to direct a big budget remake of the 1964 family comedy The Incredible Mr. Limpet, which starred Don Knotts as a guy who turned into a fish. Now, nearly three years later, Linklater has officially signed on to direct the movie, Screen Daily reports. Zach Galifianakis was in talks to star in the movie back in 2010, but it's not known whether he's still attached to the project.

Linklater is teaming up with Femke Wolting and Tommy Pallotta, who will be working on design and animation for [...]

Jack Black to Murder Shirley MacLaine in Richard Linklater's Bernie

I looks like Richard Linklater's latest, Bernie, is going to be coming to theaters at some point in the near future. The dark comedy starring Jack Black was just bought by Millennium. "Inspired by a true story, the film stars Jack Black as the title character, an amiable funeral director who kills a rich widow (Shirley MacLaine) and creates a ruse that she's still alive." Also, Matthew McConaughey is in it! OK, I'm listening.

Jon Hamm, Key & Peele, Sarah Silverman, and More in Talks to Join Zach Galifianakis in Linklater's 'Incredible Mr. Limpet' Remake

Almost six months after Richard Linklater officially signed on to direct the Incredible Mr. Limpet remake, The Wrap reports that a bunch of comedy stars are currently in talks to join the cast alongside Zach Galifianakis, who is expected to play the titular role. Jon Hamm, Danny McBride, Sarah Silverman, Kevin Hart, Josh Gad, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jordan Peele are all reportedly being considered for roles, with Hamm as the human villain, McBride and Silverman in live-action roles, and Hart, Key, and Peele voicing animated sea creatures. The Wrap notes that production on the Limpet remake could begin as early as the fall, though live-action scenes will [...]

Director Richard Linklater Hopes to Shoot a "Spiritual Sequel" to 'Dazed and Confused' This Year

Dazed and Confused director Richard Linklater is working on a "spiritual sequel" to the classic 1993 ensemble comedy. Linklater has been developing the project for several years, but he revealed yesterday during a Reddit AMA that the movie may be going into production soon. When asked about the status of the film during the Q&A, Linklater replied, "Hoping to make it this fall, actually. A college comedy. I feel like mixing it up with a big ensemble." While the untitled movie, formerly called That's What I'm Talking About, won't follow any of the characters from Dazed and Confused, it will be similar to the movie in terms of [...]
