The German and the Robot: My Awkward, Addicting Leap Into Comedy

Twelve years ago, I had just moved to New York City. I came here with a friend from my college sketch group. Her name was Alana and we had big dreams. She got a job walking dogs for a member of the SNL cast, which of course meant that within six months, we’d both be cast members too. Obviously, we quickly realized that it was going to take way longer than six months. It was going to take seven months. We got to work immediately: we took Improv Level 1 at Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, went to all kinds of comedy and weird performance art open mics, and observed [...]

You Had To Be There #113: Here's My Big Secret

This week, Sara and Nikki are back from an unplanned hiatus caused by power-touring and binge-working. To get back into the podcasting spirit, the ladies read your tweets as jumping off points for discussing shame cheese, anger yachts, and gracefully splitting a bill. When you’ve got time, check out Nikki’s favorite podcast for quoting Stuff You Should Know and keep tweeting topic suggestions, the more scandalous the better.

Talking to Nikki Glaser and Sara Schaefer About Season Two of 'Nikki & Sara Live'

Co-created and co-hosted by standups Nikki Glaser and Sara Schaefer, MTV's late night talk show Nikki & Sara Live debuted its second season late last month. The series is a mix of topical jokes, sketches, on the street bits, and celebrity interviews that quickly found an audience and earned a renewal from the network after premiering this spring. I recently had the chance to speak with Glaser and Schaefer about the new season, how they go about hiring writers, and why they're not doing their show live anymore.

You Had To Be There #109: Soup Stuff

This week, Sara and Nikki turn in their most laid-back intro yet and make a compelling case for you and all your friends and lovers to turn on MTV tonight, for at 11pm/10c the packed to the gills season premiere of Nikki & Sara Live will hit the air. After some chatter about meme thievery and fruit, your hosts summarize their sexual milestones and make great strides on their quest to create a shared catchphrase. Prove you don’t have a Backpfeifengesicht and pregame tonight’s premiere by firing up this ep this instant.

MTV Didn't Pick Up 'Nikki & Sara Live' for a Third Season

On the latest episode of their podcast You Had To Be There, Nikki Glaser and Sara Schaefer announced that their MTV show Nikki & Sara Live has been not been picked up for a third season. The pair recorded the episode in Schaefer's apartment with the crew of the show, discussing their favorite moments about the series.

Nikki & Sara Live, which began in January, aired for 24 episodes over two seasons. According to the duo, the announcement came down a few weeks ago. While the show's ratings had improved in its second season, it was never a breakaway hit with the network's largely teenage audience. It's been a big [...]

You Had To Be There #115: Row If You Want To

This week, Sara and Nikki are joined by Sara’s comedian, documentarian, vocabularian beau Scott Moran to brainstorm Halloween costumes clever enough for national TV. After a sobering foray into tragedy and inspiration, the gang lightens up towards the end with talk of drugs, cheese, and other addicting habits.

Nikki and Sara are hosting a night of stand-up at the Gramercy Theatre on November 8th for the New York Comedy Festival. They’ll fill you in on the full lineup soon, but really, what else do you need. Get yr tix here.

You Had To Be There #112: Where Are My Omelettes?

This week, after a stumbly start, Sara and Nikki call out the trap of striving to be cool and look ahead to the outlandishly busy coming week. The obvious pinnacle of your humble hosts’ next few days is their opportunity to attend the VMAs with handsome hamsters and every famous person on the face of the planet. Amidst their anticipation, the ladies manage to include a loving Beatles rant, live coverage of a GIFfinated Sara blowin’ up the Internet, and a request for Netflix horror-doc suggestions, the sadder the better.

Hey, you know that special feeling you get on a summer Monday night when you look up at [...]

You Had To Be There #110: Vellum

This week, Sara and Nikki’s chatter skews darker as they both pick fights with BS weddings and fat-shaming yogis. To alleviate the doom of hungry vultures and faulty guardrails, the ladies share some happy secrets about their TV show and a fun fact about foxes.

You Had To Be There #117: We Had a Show

This week, the podcast returns to its Brooklyn home for an hour of reflection on the fate of Nikki & Sara Live and the future of Nikki and Sara. In the closest thing that show will ever get to a reunion special, a good chunk of NSL's staff packs into Sara's apartment to laugh at favorite moments from its run and share stories of sustained disappointment and authentic joy.

Fair warning, the ladies will be taking another podcast break until the new year, so savor this cathartic party of an episode and you'll hear from them soon.

You Had To Be There #114: Lie Lie Lie

This week, Sara and Nikki briefly return to the format of yore by inviting perennial guest Cory Cavin (Awful DJ comedy, Model Wife) to talk about hangovers and listen about periods. In case you’re somehow still guest-hungry, Nikki & Sara Live production manager/breakout star Brian Hoff drops in to explain the guerrilla campaigns he wages against capitalism that are almost as lucrative as they are absurd. And speaking of guests, make sure you watch this week’s Nikki & Sara Live to see your hosts catch their white whale after years of hunting and dreaming and begging.

Oh, last thing: Nikki and Sara are hosting a [...]

You Had To Be There #111: I'm Not Even Joking You Need To Stop Smoking

This week, Sara and Nikki explore the ways of responsible adults and examine the lies that subway ads tell us about childhood. Nikki then launches an antismoking ambush and puts out a call for either tips or sympathy for her totally flawed bedroom setup.

Speaking of Nikki and Sara, check out this interview they did this week with Splitsider about Nikki & Sara Live. And speaking of Nikki & Sara Live, remember to check that on out every Tuesday night at 11pm/10c on MTV.

Watch Nikki & Sara's 'Blurred Lines' Parody

The internet has been awash with parodies of Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" music video for the past month or so, but here's one that's a cut above the rest. It comes from MTV's late night show Nikki & Sara Live, which just started its second season on Tuesday, and, unlike any other "Blurred Lines" parody I've seen, it involves barn animals.
