Chris Rock was a guest on The Champs podcast this week, and the topic of self-released stand-up specials came up. Rock, who has released all four of his specials on HBO, explained why he prefers the old model of debuting a special on cable as opposed to the $5 DIY Louis C.K. method:

"It gets me a little angry when people say, 'Oh, Louis C.K. It’s a new model where you pay him five dollars and he’s doing it all himself.' A lot of money was spent by big companies to get him to a place where he can do that. Time Warner and Adult Swim paid a lot of money for Eric and I to make stuff, and then they spent a lot of money promoting. People aren't coming out of nowhere and getting careers just by putting their stuff online."

Maria Bamford Is Releasing a Stand-Up Special Recorded in Her Living Room in Front of Her Parents

Stand-up Maria Bamford is self-releasing a new hour special called Maria Bamford: The special special special! later this month, but it's gonna be a little different than just about any stand-up special ever made because 1. she's recording it in her living room and 2. her parents will be the only ones in the audience. Laughspin reports that Bamford will be releasing the special on November 28th through the L.A.-based video site Chill.com. Bamford is currently doing voices for animated series like Adventure Time, Word Girl, and Legend of Korra and has had roles in the most recent season of Louie and the upcoming season of Arrested [...]
