Here's a Crash Course in Visual Comedy, Focused on the Work of Edgar Wright

Here's a video essay made by movie fan Tony Zhou, in which he dissects the techniques that make up director Edgar Wright's unique visual style and demonstrates a bunch of ways to tell a story visually with a comedy movie. It's something that a lot of today's top comedy directors neglect in favor of jokes and performances, and the video essay calls them out too by comparing visually inactive clips from their movies with attention-grabby clips from Wright's. 'Shaun of the Dead's Nick Frost to Star in a New Show from 'Curb' Producer

Nick Frost, whom you probably know as Simon Pegg's partner in crime from Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Paul, has signed on to star in a new British comedy series created by longtime Curb Your Enthusiasm producer/director Robert B. Weide. UK TV channel Sky Atlantic has ordered a six-episode first season of the comedy, entitled Mr. Sloane. The show is a bittersweet rom-com set in the late '60s that stars Frost as the title character, Jeremy Sloane, a man going through a midlife crisis who has his fortunes changed when he meets a woman at a hardware store. Frost can next be seen on the big screen [...]

Critics Really Like Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's 'The World's End'

It's been a pretty good summer for apocalyptic comedies, and The World's Endthe third film in the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, is getting rave reviews from critics, earning a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 82 out of 100 on Metacritic. The film, a thematic sequel to Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, is once again directed by Edgar Wright and stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as pals whose friendship is tested during a surreal adventure, this time as they return to their hometown to complete the pub crawl they failed to finish in 1990. The spoiler-phobic should probably avoid reading too many reviews; despite a [...]

Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, and Nick Frost Plan to Work Together Again

Just because Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, and Nick Frost's "Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy" wraps up this summer with their latest movie, The World's End, don't expect them to stop working together anytime soon. The trio talked about future projects at a World's End panel at Comic-Con today. "We can make (future films) about anything we want," Pegg said before jokingly hinting at their next movie being a period drama. While they didn't share any non-joke plans for a future movie, they trio did mention that they have no interest in making a revival Spaced, the 1999-2001 TV series on which the three of them first collaborated.

Wright and Pegg's Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy (spelling flavors with a "u", classic), which so far has included Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, will reach its conclusion soon. Wright and Pegg will film The World's End this fall, with intention for a spring 2013 release. As before, Wright will direct with Pegg starring with Nick Frost. Here's the synopsis:

"20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his [...]

Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright Discuss the Origins of the Cornetto Trilogy

IGN put out this nice little feature this week in which Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, and Nick Frost talk about the origins of "The Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy," which is comprised of their films Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and the upcoming The World's End. The whole concept of the trilogy, it turns out, is basically a casual joke.

The 10 Best Fish Out of Water Comedies

Sponsored posts are purely editorial content that we are pleased to have presented by a participating sponsor — in this case, Jarritos!

The “fish out of water” formula has been a go-to storyline since cinema’s early days, with filmmakers getting a lot of mileage out of plucking familiar characters from their bowls and tossing them into unfamiliar, non-aquatic settings. Using a fish out of water story can be a quick and effective way to engineer a functional comedy, but this trope isn’t always as transparent and contrived as it seems in the likes of Beverly Hills Ninja or Encino Man. The best fish out of water stories [...]
