Melissa McCarthy to Star in Paul Feig's Spy Comedy 'Susan Cooper'

Melissa McCarthy and director Paul Feig are making another movie together. The Wrap reports that McCarthy, who previously worked with Feig on summer blockbusters Bridesmaids and The Heat, is in talks to star in his new spy comedy Susan Cooper. Feig will direct and produce the film, which is based on a script he wrote unlike his previous two movies. Rather than being a wacky spoof like Austin Powers or Get Smart, Susan Cooper is a realistic comedy set in the world of spies that was inspired by Casino Royale, the 2006 James Bond reboot. The movie has one other lead character in addition to McCarthy's and is [...]

Childrens Hospital's Rob Corddry has been cast as the lead in a new ABC comedy pilot called Spy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Corddry will play Tim, the not-so-smart father of a super intelligent son who inadvertently takes a job at the secret service to impress his kid.  Spy is based on the British show of the same name, which was created by Simeon Goulden, and Goulden is writing the US adaptation as well. The UK version of Spy recently wrapped its second season, and you can check it out on Hulu here. Rob Corddry recently appeared in a ton of movies and TV guest star [...]

Paul Feig Is Writing and Directing the Spy Comedy 'Susan Cooper'

Paul Feig's next movie may end up being another female-driven action-comedy. Feig, who created Freaks and Geeks and directed Bridesmaids, also directed The Heat, the Sandra Bullock-Melissa McCarthy buddy cop comedy that's poised to be a big summer hit upon its June 28th release. The Wrap reports that Feig is developing a new film called Susan Cooper, a spy comedy that he's writing, producing, and directing. Rather than a goofy spoof in the vein of Austin Powers or Get Smart, the project is a realistic comedy set in the world of spies that was inspired by the 2006 James Bond reboot Casino Royale. Feig is currently searching for an actress [...]

ABC to Pilot American Version of 'Spy'

Spy is a British show about a single father who quits his mundane job and is accidentally recruited to become a spy. You know, the classic way spies are found. Now picture him as American. ("OOOOooooOOOO," says you.) ABC is working to develop an adaption of the popular Sky 1 comedy with the original creator Simeon Goulden writing the pilot. It's expected the series will be given a put pilot, which means it will have to be aired. There has a been a lot of proposed British sitcom adaptions recently; however, truthfully, ever since The Office, it has been a pretty constant flow. It's probably all the execs [...]

Ken Jeong Lines Up a Potential Post-'Community' Gig

Community's Ken Jeong has booked a new sitcom pilot that could wind up being a new fall show. Deadline reports that Jeong has been cast in the ABC pilot Spy, based on the British comedy of the same name. The show stars Rob Corddry as the father of a highly-intelligent child (Mason Cook), who takes a job at the Secret Service in order to prove himself to his son. Jeong will play Corddry's mischievous boss, The Examiner. Paget Brewster and comedian Moshe Kasher have also joined the cast.

If Community, which posted its lowest ratings ever on Thursday, does get renewed for a fifth season by NBC, [...]

Diving Into the Archives of Spy, The Funniest Magazine Ever

Maybe you've heard of Spy Magazine, the satirical magazine that was one of the funniest things ever in the late '80s and early '90s, but never read it. Now that Google Books has put much of the Spy archive online, you can see what the fuss was about. For me, it was the magazine that redeemed American culture while everything else sucked.

In 1987 I was a junior in high school and nothing was funny. SNL had not recovered from its Gary Kroeger years, Johnny Carson was getting old. National Lampoon was in one of its stupid phases. There was no Onion, Simpsons, Seinfeld or even Kids in [...]
