HBO Cancels 'Family Tree' and 'Hello Ladies'

HBO has canceled a couple of its new comedy series. THR reports that Family Tree, starring Chris O'Dowd and co-created by Christopher Guest, and Hello Ladies, starring and co-created by Stephen Merchant, have been canceled by the pay-cable network. Both shows aired their eight episode first (and only) seasons last year. Hello Ladies will, however, have one final special episode.

While these two shows have been canceled, HBO is in talks to renew its comedy Getting On for a second season. An adaptation of the UK show of the same name, Getting On stars Alex Borstein, Niecy Nash, and Laurie Metcalf as a trio of nurses at a geriatric [...]

Eastbound & Down is set to premiere its last season (again). HBO announced today that the Danny McBride baseball comedy will conclude its run following an eight-episode season that's set to premiere Sunday, September 29th at 10pm. Season 4 will pick up several years after the last season, with Kenny Powers living with his family in North Carolina. McBride and co-creator Jody Hill had previously planned for Season 3 to be the show's final season, but were wooed back for one more year by HBO. We'll just see if they end up changing their minds again after filming Season 4.

HBO today also announced the premiere dates for [...]

Meet the Supporting Cast of Stephen Merchant's 'Hello Ladies'

Hello Ladies is Stephen Merchant's HBO sitcom about Stephen wanting to be super cool and part of LA's social scene of gorgeous perfect people. His supporting cast will be made up a lot of actors that evoke the reaction of, "Oh yeah, that person." Christine Woods (Perfect Couples, FlashFoward) will play Jessica, a platonic friend of Stephen's character who lives in his guest house. Nate Torrence (She's Out of My League, Studio 60) will play Wade, Stephen's best friend who is unhappily forced to join Stephen in the LA dating world, after his wife leaves him. Kevin Weisman (Alias) will play Kives. (Yes, he's named Kives. What's that? That's not [...]

Stephen Merchant's Fans Don't Entirely Trust Him

Stephen Merchant stopped by Conan last night, and the Hello Ladies star and Office co-creator has learned that while his fans really like him, they're still not quite sure they can trust him. Below, he delves into the difficulties of modern dating, and why he would have been much happier when death was a bigger part finding love.

Watch a Trailer for Stephen Merchant's New HBO Show 'Hello Ladies'

Stephen Merchant, Ricky Gervais's writing partner and co-creator of The Office and Extras, is set to play his first lead role in Hello Ladies, an HBO sitcom he co-created that debuts September 29th. Stephen Merchant and Anna Faris Star in Ali G/Borat Writer Dan Mazer's New Rom-Com

Here's the trailer for I Give It a Year, a romantic comedy from Dan Mazer, Sacha Baron Cohen's longtime writing partner who co-wrote and produced Da Ali G Show, Borat, and Brüno. The movie, Mazer's first as a director, stars Rose Byrne, Anna Faris, Rafe Spall, Simon Baker, and Stephen Merchant, and judging by the trailer, it has just as many sex jokes as you'd expect from a romantic comedy by the writer of Borat.

Stephen Merchant Piloting for HBO

HBO has ordered a pilot for a new show co-written/directed/starring Stephen Merchant. Entitled Hello Ladies, the show focuses on a tall British fellow in LA looking for the love of his life. This isn't so easy, as the city's young and beautiful are not the most willing to allow the gangling and awkward into their beautiful inner circle of beautiful people. The show was co-created/co-written by former US Office writers-producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. They're best known for writing the hit comedy Bad Teacher and for recently failing to pen an agreeable third Ghostbusters movie. It's good to see Merchant working with someone other than Ricky Gervais. [...]

Stephen Merchant\'s Undying Love for the Romantic Comedy

Despite all of its cringe-worthy moments, the original version of The Office was at its core a love story between the characters Tim and Dawn. So it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that series co-creator Stephen Merchant has a bit of a soft spot for romantic comedies.

That affinity is on display in Merchant’s latest project, Hello Ladies: The Movie, which premieres Sunday on HBO. Merchant stars in, co-wrote, and directed the TV movie, which concludes the series of the same name that aired for one season on HBO.

I recently had the chance to chat with Merchant about Hello Ladies, his first major project without long-time [...]

Stephen Merchant's 'Hello Ladies' Feels Cringe-Worthingly Familiar

Stephen Merchant is, and probably will always be, best known as the co-creator of cringe-worthy shows that made Ricky Gervais very famous: The Office, Extras, and The Ricky Gervais Show, amongst others. But last night, he stepped into his first starring role with the premiere of HBO’s Hello Ladies, which he also directed, co-created, and co-wrote. The show stars Merchant as gangly Englishman Stuart Pritchard, who is desperately attempting to find love in Los Angeles. He’s normally accompanied in these endeavors by his recently dumped friend Wade (Nate Torrence) and ultra-charming ladies man Kives (Kevin Weisman).

The pilot opens with a joke that is undeniably hysterical, the kind of [...]

The show is set to start airing Sunday, September 29th, and it looks like it'll be pretty good if basing your expectatins for a show off a 15-second clip is okay to do.

HBO Orders Stephen Merchant's 'Hello Ladies' to Series

The Office and Extras co-creator Stephen Merchant's HBO pilot Hello Ladies just got picked up by the pay cable network for an eight-episode run, Deadline reports. Merchant writes, directs, and stars in the new series, in which he'll play a gawky Englishman looking for love in the States. The pilot co-starred Nate Torrence, Christine Woods, and Kevin Weisman, and the show will be produced by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who worked on the US version of The Office. We've seen a lot of Ricky Gervais since Extras went off the air, but it'll be nice to get some more Stephen Merchant on the TV screen for [...]
