Splitsider's Summer Comedy Preview: TV

Summer is typically an unusual season in the TV world, as all the broadcast series go on hiatus, cable networks air some cool stuff, and, as of late, the major networks do some weird experimental stuff that mostly doesn't end up working. This summer is no different, with cable favorites like Nathan For You, Louie (currently airing), and Comedy Bang! Bang! returning while NBC is bringing back Last Comic Standing and experimenting with a couple international comedies and Fox is debuting an improvised game show.

Check out our guide to the new and returning TV comedies set to debut throughout the next few months:

NBC to Burn Off Anne Heche's 'Save Me' This Summer

NBC announced its summer schedule this week, revealing that they'll be burning off its only remaining new comedy, Save Me, during the summer. Starring Anne Heche as a woman who believes God is speaking to her after she nearly chokes to death on a sandwich, Save Me looked to be one of the better comedies from NBC's 2012-13 lineup (albeit a lineup that also included 1600 Penn and Animal Practice) when the network announced its schedule last May. NBC Announces Summer Premieres for New Sitcoms 'Welcome to Sweden', 'Working the Engels', and 'Undateable'

Created by Adam Sztykiel (Due Date), produced by Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Cougar Town), and starring Chris D'Elia (Whitney) and standups Ron Funches and Brent Morin.
  • Thurs., July 10th at 9pm: Welcome to Sweden, an English-language Swedish comedy [...]

Summer 'Daily Show' Host John Oliver's Main Goal is to Not Destroy the Show

It was announced in March that Jon Stewart will be taking three months off from hosting The Daily Show this summer to direct his first movie, Iranian torture drama Rosewater, and that longtime correspondent John Oliver, who's been with the show since 2006, will be guest-hosting beginning June 10th. Oliver spoke to The Hollywood Reporter this week about his plans for his eight weeks behind the anchor desk, which mostly involve just not ruining the show. "When he gets back I'm just trying to make sure this building is not on fire both physically and metaphorically," Oliver explains. "That is the aim, just to keep the show on [...]
