Splitsider's Summer Comedy Preview: Movies

While the summer movie season is traditionally known for big, loud superhero movies, it's also the time of year when the highest number of comedies hits theaters. It's also the time of year that tends to offer the best big-screen comedies. Take last summer, for example, when This Is the End, The Heat, The World's End, and indie In a World… all came out and ended up better-received than anything released before or after the summer.

Summer 2014's crop of comedies is a little smaller than usual for whatever reason, but there's still plenty of stuff to look forward to, including hot comedy directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller's 22 [...]

Summer Comedy Preview: TV

Charlie Sheen is finally coming back to TV everyone!!!! Splitsider readers will no doubt be dancing in the streets when the Two and a Half Men man himself returns to our television sets with a new show this June, but that's not the only TV comedy event of note this summer. While the broadcast networks are taking a much-needed three-month break (probably to reflect on the rapidly-declining popularity of broadcast networks), America's heroic cable channels are swooping in to save the day, offering up a plethora of new comedic programming for comedy snobs and people who like comedy but aren't snobs, alike.

Splitsider's Summer Comedy Preview: TV

This is the first Louie-less summer since Louis C.K.'s acclaimed FX series began, but there's plenty to look forward to this May-August as a lot of high-profile shows are coming back and some promising new shows on the way too. Of course, the biggest deal amongst this summer's batch of new and returning series is Arrested Development's return on Netflix later this month with a 15-episode fourth season. Despite the much-hyped Arrested Development reunion, there's plenty of other exciting stuff to watch too, including a new series from Christopher Guest, the launch of Fox's late night Saturday animated block ADHD, and the returns of Childrens Hospital, Whose Line Is [...]

We’re only a week into summer movie season, and it’s already overloaded with superheroes. More excitement is coming too, as Hollywood rolls out what are expected to be its biggest hits this time ever year. There's no shortage of comedies this summer, as Batman and Spider-man will be duking it out at the box office with the likes of Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, and, um, Wes Anderson.

What's in store for us comedy wise? The return of the Men in Black! A movie based on a pregnancy guidebook! A comedy based on a novel by Saddam Hussein! And a comedy that had to change its name because of the [...]

Splitsider's Summer Comedy Preview: Movies

Iron Man 3 raked in a ton of cash this weekend and officially kicked off the 2013 summer movie season, which is set to contain an unusually high amount of comedies. From blockbuster sequels like The Hangover III and Grown Ups 2 to indie fare like Michael Cera's psychedelic drug movie Crystal Fairy and Joss Whedon's Shakespeare adaptation, this year's summer movie season has a wide variety of comedies to offer. Your best bets this time around look like Bridesmaids director Paul Feig's Sandra Bullock-Melissa McCarthy buddy cop movie The Heat and two dueling apocalypse comedies, This Is the End from Seth Rogen and Company and The World's End [...]

Summer 2011 Comedy Preview: TV

Summer was once a desolate wasteland when it came to original programming, with wall-to-wall reruns blanketing the television landscape so the cast and crew of your favorite shows could take their much-needed vacations. All that has changed in the aftermath of the cable TV renaissance, and it's now just as easy for TV junkies to get their fix during these warmer months as it is during the traditional broadcast season.

While the big networks will mostly be airing forgettable reality shows and the scripted series they didn’t like enough to fit into their broadcast season schedules, cable nets have figured out that summer's the perfect time to bring their [...]
