The "Gas Leak Year" of 'The Boondocks'

For its first three seasons, The Boondocks, which followed inner-city siblings Huey and Riley Freeman's adjustment to life in the predominantly white Illinois suburb of Woodcrest, was a genuinely funny and remarkable achievement on TV. It was the first successful TV-MA-rated animated sitcom spearheaded by an African-American comedic mind, as well as the first animated show that the hip-hop generation can be proud to call its own.

Cartoonist Aaron McGruder's adaptation of his own popular 1996-2006 comic strip took no prisoners in its satirical potshots at the likes of gangsta rappers, the Republican Party, Tyler Perry, and the network execs behind BET's lowest-common-denominator programming. The original strip took no prisoners [...]

The Boondocks ended its four-season run on Adult Swim earlier this summer, with McGruder having left the show after its third season.

Adult Swim just released this trailer for the new season of The Boondocks. Premiering April 21st, the fourth season will be the show's last and it'll be the first time Boondocks has run new episodes in nearly four years. What's On TV This Week: 'Wilfred' Returns and 'The Boondocks' Airs Its Last Episode Ever

Prior to the start of the fourth and final season of Adult Swim's animated comedy The Boondocks, creator Aaron McGruder parted ways with the show and what's resulted has been an odd last season for a show that we dubbed its "gas leak year" in a feature a couple weeks back. That season comes to a close this week, with The Boondocks' series finale set to air tonight on Adult Swim. Elsewhere in the world of television comedy this week, Wilfred will air the season premiere of its third and final season on Wednesday, Melissa McCarthy is making the rounds to promote her new movie Tammy, and Nathan Fielder [...]

The studio behind the show, Sony, said in a release that the new season  "was produced without the involvement of Aaron McGruder, when a mutually agreeable production schedule could not be determined." McGruder, who served as The Boondocks' showrunner for its first three seasons and created the comic strip upon which the show is based, has been busy with his new live-action Adult Swim series, Black Jesus.
