Inside the Job of a Showrunner with 'The Comedians' Ben Wexler

For the past decade television audiences have become increasingly aware of the showrunner, the individual responsible for the day-to-day operations of a television show. Ben Wexler has built his career working on shows like Community and Arrested Development, where the showrunners can stand out as much as the stars. Wexler is now the executive producer and co-creator of FX’s The Comedians. The show stars Billy Crystal and Josh Gad as slightly heightened versions of themselves, teamed up to create a new FX sketch show. I spoke with Wexler about creative freedoms, the many talents of his stars, and the importance of being a decisive showrunner.

FX Orders Billy Crystal/Josh Gad Pilot 'The Comedians' to Series, Will Debut in 2015

Cable network FX announced today that they've ordered the pilot The Comedians to series. Starring Billy Crystal and Josh Gad, The Comedians is based on the Swedish show of the same name and was ordered to pilot by FX last summer. The American adaptation is being written by Larry Charles (Seinfeld, Borat), Matt Nix (Burn Notice, The Good Guys), and Ben Wexler (Community, Michael J. Fox Show), and it follows a well-known veteran comedian (Crystal) working on a late night sketch show with an edgy young comedian (Gad). Here's the First Trailer for Billy Crystal and Josh Gad's 'The Comedians'

The trailer for FX's new series The Comedians dropped today, and it features three of the most revered elements of American comedy: ham eating, adult diapers, and horny bears. "[Crystal] comes from more of an old-school mentality of wanting the purity of comedy in the way that he experienced it growing up in the industry, and I come from more of a take-no prisoners approach in that Apatow age of scatological humor and edgy comedy," Gad explained to EW. "And when the two of those things come to a head with each other, there’s conflict." Get ready for the conflict to begin on Thursday, April 9th.

With Robin Williams returning to TV on CBS this fall, it looks like his old comedy buddy Billy Crystal may be coming back to television too after nearly three decades away. Crystal has signed on as a star and producer for the new FX pilot The Comedians, based on the Swedish show of the same name. Billy Crystal Is Reviving His 'SNL' Characters on FX Show 'The Comedians'

If you've been clamoring for an encore performance of Billy Crystal's SNL characters from the mid-'80s, your dreams are about to come true. FX's upcoming Billy Crystal/Josh Gad show The Comedians — which follows a veteran comedian (Crystal) working on a late night talk show with an edgy young comedian (Gad) — is set to premiere in summer 2015, and according to Page Six, Crystal is bringing some of his SNL work with him to the new show.
