Sacha Baron Cohen's General Aladeen Has Released a Statement On Kim Jong-Il's Death

What do you do when you're in the middle of promoting a movie about a selfish, egomaniacal dictator, and then a real-life selfish, egomaniacal dictator dies? Release an in-character statement eulogizing your friend, doy. Here's what General Aladeen of The Dictator has to say about Kim Jong Il's death:

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM HIS EXCELLENCY ADMIRAL GENERAL ALADEEN – SUPREME LEADER, ALL TRIUMPHANT GENERAL AND CHIEF OPTHAMOLOGIST OF PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF WADIYA

I am saddened to learn of the passing of my dear friend Kim Jong-Il. Our thoughts go out to his wife and 813 children. “K-Jo” was a great leader, good friend and average double’s badminton partner. He [...]

Anna Faris Ditches the Blonde Locks for The Dictator

In her recent New Yorker profile, Anna Faris expressed frustration with how studios always wanted her to be sexy, when she just wanted to be funny. As the female lead in Sasha Baron Cohen's upcoming The Dictator, it looks like she got her wish. Long blonde hair and short skirts look like they'll be nowhere near her character, at least based on this first shot of her from the movie.

Sacha Baron Cohen Is The Dictator

You know that they say about a man who gigantic, fabulous epaulets. You know, that he's probably some kind of ruthless tyrant. Huffington Post has the first official image of Sacha Baron Cohen as The Dictator, and all those tassels certainly suggest so. Cohen has also been spotted shooting The Dictator in Queens recently, which means we also have a sweet stars-and-stripes track suit ensemble to look forward too. Who knew despots were such divas? Well, I guess the other way to look at it is that they're the ultimate divas. That's one for the political scientists to hash out.

Sacha Baron Cohen and Larry Charles Team Up Again For The Dictator

Sacha Baron Cohen is prepping his third movie with director Larry Charles, who helmed both Borat and Bruno. It'll be called The Dictator, and in it Cohen will reportedly play both a goat herder and a deposed foreign dictator who gets lost in the United States. It's written by Cohen and Curb Your Enthusiasm writers Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel.

It's not clear if this is going to be a more straightforward scripted affair or another mockumentary like his last two. But the title and the plot make it sound like somewhat of an homage to Chaplin's classic The Great Dictator. We'll see if that's [...]

The Dictator Trailer Hits Computer Screens Like a Huge Steel Breast

The first trailer for The Dictator is out and it features ziplines, a bitter postcoital Megan Fox, and a woman (or a man dressed as a woman?) breaking a brick with what looks to be a giant steel boob. And of course, Sacha Baron Cohen's General Aladeen riding down 5th Avenue in a camel cavalcade, paying tribute to our beautiful, AIDSy country. This summer, we will all be power-hungry dictators. Metaphorically.

John C. Reilly, Megan Fox Join The Dictator

The Hollywood Reporter claims that John C. Reilly and Megan Fox will cameo in The Dictator, Fox being particularly excited to work for a tyrannical despot who isn't Michael Bay.

Anna Faris Offered Female Lead In Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator

While a few hilarious names had been tossed around for the female lead in Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator, Anna Faris has been offered the role and is currently in negotiations. Faris will play "the owner of an organic food store" who meets Cohen's desposed leader and "turns around his dictatorial thinking," which is just going to encourage even more organic food store owners to sleep with war criminals.

J.B. Smoove Brings the Ruckus to The Dictator

In case you had any any lingering, Bruno-induced doubts about Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator, at least you can feel secure that someone is about to topsy-turvey that motherfucker. According to The Hollywood Reporter, J.B, Smoove joins The Dictator alongside Cohen, Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley and Jason Mantzoukas, as well as cameos from Johh C. Reilly and Megan Fox. The Curb Your Enthusiasm actor will be playing the role of "Usher." Little else is known about the part, which I will chose to believe is the "Confessions Part II" singer until I am physically planted in the theater, watching the trailers.

The Dictator, Great and Otherwise: Is Sacha Baron Cohen the Modern Charlie Chaplin?

The Guardian's Phil Hoad points out that, not only do Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator and Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator seem cut from the same cloth, but there are enough similarities between the two comedians that Cohen has essentially picked up Chaplin's comedic mantel, albeit for our modern, naked-man-wrestling sensibilities.

In addition to lampooning their era's respective despots, Hoad draws deep parallels between the naivety and lanky spasticity of Borat and the bumbling innocence of Chaplin's The Little Tramp, asking what other physical comedian commits as well to playing an innocent terror. "Both characters shuffle along on similar lines: the naif, adrift in a [...]

Ben Kingsley, Jason Mantzoukas Up For Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator

Variety reports that Ben Kingsley has joined Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator, while The League's Jason Mantzoukas is in talks for Cohen's sidekick and likely to sign on. Set to be released May 11, 2012, Baron Cohen's political satire follows the adventures of a disposed dictator as he attempts to protect his country from democracy. The film is based on the novel Zabibah and the King, typically attributed to Saddam Hussein and containing slightly fewer talking-penis gags than the film version. Meanwhile, Anna Faris, Kristen Wiig and Gillian Jacos are up for the role of the dictator's love interest. Given the awkward sex scenes in [...]
