Harnessing Absurdity to Help Others with Kurt Braunohler

You can catch Kurt Braunohler’s new episode of The Half Hour this Friday, July 25, but he’s been focused on a lot more than just standup lately. In June, the comedian jet skied the Mississippi River from Chicago to New Orleans as part of his Indiegogo campaign to raise $50,000 to provide 500 goats and 1000 chickens to African families in need. The quest is documented in his Comedy Central web series Roustabout, coming out this fall.

On top of that, Kurt is starring in the upcoming film B Roll, has plans to release a compilation album from his standup/variety show Hot Tub with Kristen Schaal, and continues [...]

Damien Lemon on His Comedy Central 'Half Hour' and How He Became a Comedy Cellar Regular

For years Damien Lemon was known as much for his comedic skills as his legendary beater Toyota Corolla. With the way his career is going now, he’s probably due for an upgrade if he hasn’t done so already.

Lemon is one of the rising stars in the NYC comedy scene and has become a regular at most standup clubs, including the famed Comedy Cellar. He’s a cast member on MTV2’s Guy Code, and made his film debut two years ago in The Amazing Spider-Man.

On Friday, you can see his new special on Comedy Central as part of their Half Hour series.

I recently caught up with Lemon while he [...]

How Fortune Feimster Went From Entertainment Blogger to Breakout Comedian

Fortune Feimster is currently at a big crossroads in her career. The North Carolina-born standup, improviser, and sitcom actor competed in Last Comic Standing in 2010, has regularly appeared on Chelsea Lately since 2011, and joined the cast of Tina Fey's Fox pilot Cabot College this year, not to mention her recent standup sets on This Is Not Happening and Conan as well as bit parts on 2 Broke Girls and Workaholics. With the end of Chelsea Lately in August and the fate of the Fey pilot still unknown, Feimster's new Comedy Central standup special — a unique mix of self-deprecation, Southern mother tales, and unexpected bouts of [...]

Adam Newman on His Beginnings in Comedy and His New Comedy Central 'Half Hour'

Adam Newman wants you to know that his new Comedy Central half-hour special, which airs Friday, contains what he hopes is the longest diarrhea joke in televised history. The Brooklyn-based comedian’s episode of The Half Hour airs this Friday, and the special has always been his main goal as a standup. Along the way, he’s appeared on John Oliver’s New York Standup Show, released his first album, and made his Letterman debut last year.

I got the chance to talk with Newman about how he did a 45-minute set for his first time doing standup, Last Comic Standing, and poop jokes, among other things.

Chris Distefano on the Insane Workload of a Comedian and His Comedy Central Half Hour

Every year, Comedy Central hands out half-hour specials to up and coming standups as part of its series The Half Hour. NYC-based comedian Chris Distefano has the honor of kicking off the new season of The Half Hour, with his special set to air this Friday at midnight. Distefano rose up via NYC's comedy scene before making the jump to television. He performed his first network standup set last year on Letterman, is currently a regular on MTV2's Guy CodeGuy Court, and MTV's Girl Code.

I recently caught up with Distefano to discuss setting his doctorate in physical therapy aside to focus on comedy, finding out he got his special during a bad breakup, and [...]

Joe Wengert on His 'Half Hour' Special and Writing for Three Very Different TV Shows

With a half hour special under his belt, Joe Wengert's standup career is taking off, so it’s not hard to believe that he's also an accomplished improviser. Wengert ran the UCB Theatre's school in New York and then in LA and still regularly performs improv at the LA theater with the team The Smokes in addition to the long-running show ASSSSCAT. His TV writing credits are impressive as well: Wengert has written for Kroll Show, Comedy Bang! Bang! and Playing House. You can catch his episode of The Half Hour this Friday, July 18th, at 12:30 am.

I got to talk to Joe about preparing for The Half Hour, writing [...]

Rachel Feinstein on Her Comedy Central 'Half Hour' and the Other Rachel Feinstein

Rachel Feinstein came to New York when she was 17. She did not go to college. She lived in Brooklyn. She shared her apartment with a band that called itself "Dicksister." When Feinstein entered comedy, however, she found an outlet and crowd that she grew to love. Since then, she's appeared on Last Comic Standing, had a Comedy Central Presents special, performed in Women Who Kill, produced an album (Thug Tears), appeared in numerous online sketches, done voices for Grand Theft Auto, and has begun to make more appearances on the acting scene.

Her second Comedy Central special, as part of their series, Half Hour, airs this Friday. I recently [...]

Yannis Pappas on Why He Did Standup for 14 Years Before Doing a Half-Hour Special

Yannis Pappas is (fictionally) Mr. Panos, a deeply patriotic Greek man who owns “The Baby Socrates Diner.” He is also (fictionally) Maurica, a pre-operative transsexual Puerto Rican in search of a wealthy man to pay for surgery. More importantly, Yannis has (factually) survived being shot, (factually) been a 9/11 relief worker, and will soon (factually) have his own Comedy Central The Half Hour special.

After 14 years of pushing and pulling his comedy career through the mud, a 30-minute special is more than due to this particular installment of the New York comedy scene. He’s long been selling out shows from coast to coast, performed as widely as South Africa and [...]

Tommy Johnagin on Breaking Out as a Comic from Somewhere Other Than NY, LA, or Chicago

There’s no definitive path to a successful career in standup comedy. Just ask Tommy Johnagin.

Though he now lives in LA, Johnagin built a career in his mid-20s headlining clubs across the country, appearing on Letterman multiple times, and starring in his own Half Hour special on Comedy Central while based in St. Louis.

That kind of exposure doesn’t happen often to comics based in non-coastal cities, but Johnagin was able to pull it off through a relentless work ethic, clever jokes, and a clear idea of career goals.

Now, Johnagin’s back with a new The Half Hour on Comedy Central. Ahead of the Friday premiere, we talked about starting out [...]

Here's the Full Schedule for 2014's Comedy Central 'Half Hour' Specials

Every summer, Comedy Central debuts half-hour specials from a handful of standup comedians as a part of their appropriately-titled series The Half Hour. Comedy Central tells us that the new season of The Half Hour will debut Friday, June 6th, at midnight, with the rest of the season airing with back-to-back episodes Fridays at midnight.

As previously announced, the 14 standups getting Half Hour specials this year are Adam Newman, Chris Distefano, Chris Gethard, Damien Lemon, Fortune Feimster, Joe Wengert, Joe Zimmerman, Kurt Braunohler, Mark Normand, Michael Che, Rachel Feinstein, Ron Funches, Tommy Johnagin, and Yannis Pappas. Check out the full schedule of Half Hour premiere dates below [...]

Mark Normand on His Eventful Comedy Central 'Half Hour' Taping and Bad Advice from Other Comedians

Mark Normand has slogged his way through the New York comedy scene since 2006. For years now, he's labored through open mics all across the city, played shows to half-filled rooms and drunk, distracted patrons, spent hours enticing passers-by to free comedy shows in the West Village, and balanced multiple careers, a relationship, and a social life.

But all of these have not been for nothing. Normand is now a Comedy Cellar regular, has appeared on Conan, Last Comic Standing, and Inside Amy Schumer. Most recently, Normand finally assembled his first album, Still Got It, and filmed his first Comedy Central special for their series The Half Hour, which [...]

Ron Funches on Fighting His "Adorable" Image

Sure, Ron Funches is an undeniably likable comedy teddy bear. But don’t get it twisted. “Oh, I’m sweet and nice. But don’t fuck with me.” Funches is having a great summer as his name is taking small strides toward household status, with his role on NBC’s new sitcom Undateable, the premiere of his Comedy Central Half Hour special, and being booked alongside a bunch of big names on Funny Or Die's upcoming Oddball Fest tour. I talked with Funches about TV, balancing standup with acting, and how fatherhood fosters toughness.

Watch Chris Gethard Tell His Bonnaroo Drug Story on His Comedy Central Special

Chris Gethard's standup special, part of Comedy Central's series The Half Hour, is set to air this Friday at midnight, and here's an exclusive preview clip from the special, in which Gethard describes the time he did molly for the first time at the music festival Bonnaroo and got pretty freaked out. Also, according to Gethard, "Jigger!" is the word in the clip that is bleeped out for some reason.

Part two of the clip is below:

Michael Che on Respecting the Craft of Standup, 'SNL' Haters, and His Comedy Central Half Hour

Michael Che's first half hour special premieres on Comedy Central this Friday, but that's far from the only new gig for the New York-born standup who has also appeared on Bunk, John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show, Best Week Ever, and Splitsider's own A Night at Whiplash and served as writer on Saturday Night Live for the past year. In addition to the premiere of his Half Hour, this month marks Che's transition to his new job as correspondent for The Daily Show, and seeing as he's the mind behind headline-grabbing SNL sketches like "White Christmas" and "12 Years Not a Slave" it's safe to assume [...]
