Fox Renews 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine,' 'The Mindy Project,' and 'New Girl'

It looks like Fox has a lot of confidence in its current comedy slate, if its early season renewal news from Friday is any indication. According to Deadline, the network has renewed New Girl, The Mindy Project, and the Golden Globe-winning freshman sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine for fourth, third, and second seasons, respectively. While it's not very common for networks to hand out early renewals before airing pilots — especially for ratings strugglers like Mindy and Brooklyn — Fox has begun a new approach to pilot season, so this move may be part of that bigger push.

Mindy Kaling and Lena Dunham Talk Comedy, Showrunning, and Fantasy Magazine Descriptions

"When Mindy Kaling arrived to the Chateau Marmont 30 minutes late, she apologized profusely and began dabbing ice water on a badly skinned knee. 'I thought I hit an old woman in the Loehmann's parking lot,' she said, a flush of perspiration on her cheeks and forehead. 'Turned out it was a sack of trash with a shawl draped on it. Got so mad at it that I kicked it, and this happened.' She gestured to her knee."

'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Bested 'Dads' In the Ratings Last Night

Fox debuted it's new comedy block last night, and Andy Samberg's new cop sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine did pretty well, pulling in six million viewers. It also was the most watched show by men under 50 on broadcast television last night. It followed the controversially racist Dads, which pulled in about 5.5 million, as did the season premiere of New Girl.

But it was New Girl that did best in the key demographic of 18- to 49-year-olds, scoring a 2.9 rating in comparison to Brooklyn's 2.5 and Dads' 2.1. Meanwhile, the premiere of The Mindy Project, which had made available online and on VOD early, pulled in 1.9 in the [...]

Watch the Season 2 Premiere of 'The Mindy Project' with James Franco Right Now

Mindy Kaling's The Mindy Project doesn't start its second season until next Tuesday, but Fox released the season premiere online early this morning and you can watch the whole thing above. The premiere, entitled "All My Problems Solved Forever," picks up with Mindy and her minister boyfriend (guest star Anders Holt) living in Haiti, while Dr. Paul Leotard (guest star James Franco) becomes the practice's newest physician back in New York.

Adam Pally to Star in the Indie Comedy 'Bad Boys Crazy Girls'

Happy Endings and Mindy Project star Adam Pally is set to play the lead role in a movie. He's set to star in an indie comedy called Bad Boys Crazy Girls, about a pair of friends who are unlucky in love, THR reports. Directed by Don Argott and Sheena Joyce (The Art of the Steal) and written by Heither Maidat (Mad), the film follows friends Jeff (Pally) and Anne, who experiment in modifying their personalities to improve their romantic lives in order to have people think of them as "bad" and "crazy."

Pally has been racking up a ton of roles in movies lately. He'll be playing one [...]

Talking to Tracey Wigfield About Writing for 'The Mindy Project' and '30 Rock'

When 30 Rock finished shooting in December of 2012, Tracey Wigfield had 10 days to decide to move to LA to work on The Mindy Project. She made a great choice. After joining the show midseason and writing the episodes “Santa Fe” and “Frat Party,” she was named one of Glamour’s 35 Under 35: Top Women in Movies and TV. Most impressive of all, in September she won an Emmy for co-writing the 30 Rock finale with Tina Fey.

Now in the middle of The Mindy Project’s second season, I got the chance to talk to Wigfield about starting as a writer’s assistant, improv, and why Christmas episodes are [...]

Sorry, NBC: Fox Is Now the Home of Critically Acclaimed, Smart Comedies

"Those Thursday comedies, which the critics love and we love, tend to be a bit more narrow than we'd ultimately like going forward," NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told reporters at a press tour last summer before the start of the 2012-2013 TV season. He added that those shows, like Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, Community, and The Office, "tend to be a little bit more narrow and sophisticated than you might want for a broad audience. I hope these new shows we've got for the fall and the spring are also clever and also smart, but can also broaden the size of the audience."

That new batch of falls [...]

We're Still Waiting For 'The Mindy Project' to Become Great

The Mindy Project airs Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. eastern on Fox. The season premiere is tonight, but you can watch it online sooner than that.

The Mindy Project premiered one year ago as a sitcom that attempted to bring a romcom to the small screen, focusing on Mindy Lahiri, an OB-GYN obsessed with romcoms. The show attempted to balance the screen time between Mindy’s personal life with her friends and paramours and the assorted weirdos and/or jerks with whom she shares an office. But as early as the third episode, changes were being made, and by the middle of the season, Anna Camp, Stephen Toblowsky, Tommy Dewey, [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'The Mindy Project' on DVD

Look, we all know The Mindy Project has had some ups and downs (drastic casting changes, episodes airing out of order, etc.). But its merit exists not in the depth of its side characters, but in the journey the audience takes with Mindy as she stumbles her way through love, life, and a less-than-romantic job as an OB-GYN. The show flirts with stereotypes of rom-com love, only to shine light on how absurd it often can be (in the last episode, angry neighbors yell at Mindy for running down the street into her lover's arms in the middle of the night). Its strong writers (which includes Kaling, [...]

Mike Schur Compares 'Parks and Rec', 'The Mindy Project', and 'The Office'

"We both came from the office-comedy world. You took the office-comedy world and said, 'I’m going to be a boy-crazy, high-achieving goofball, and the show is going to be like a second Office but the subject material is going to be much more about romantic life.' And then [with Parks and Recreation], I took the office-comedy world and just went into things that I was interested in, like government, public service, and high-minded achievements … we took the same setting and put our own spin on it."

-Mike Schur, co-creator of Parks and Recreation, in conversation with Mindy Kaling for Vulture, comparing his show to her show, The Mindy Project, and the [...]

Fox Is Taking 'Dads' Off the Schedule and Putting 'Mindy Project' on a Short Hiatus Early Next Year

Fox announced its midseason schedule yesterday, and Glee will soon be moving to Tuesdays at 8pm, the slot currently occupied by  freshman comedies Dads and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Brooklyn will be moved to The Mindy Project's slot at 9:30 after New Girl, sending Mindy on a two-month break and Dads will be taken off the schedule indefinitely despite the show having recently received a full season order. Mindy will air new episodes through January 28th and will return after Brooklyn finishes its season on April 1st. Brooklyn will take over its new timeslot on February 4th, and Dads' last schedule episode is set for February 11th.

Adam Pally Promoted to Series Regular on 'The Mindy Project'

Even though Happy Endings is canceled, you'll soon be able to see star Adam Pally on TV every week again. Pally has been made a series regular on Fox's The Mindy Project, TV Line reports. It was announced over the summer that he'd been hired to do a multi-episode guest starring arc as a new doctor at Mindy's OB/GYN practice, but he's quickly been promoted to a full-time cast member on the show. His first appearance is in the second season's third episode, which airs October 1st.

Since attempts to bring Happy Endings to a new network didn't work out, the show's stars have rapidly been finding work elsewhere. [...]

Talking to Ike Barinholtz About 'The Mindy Project', 'MADtv', and His 'Game of Thrones' Audition Tape

From Twitter buddy to staff writer to breakout series regular, Ike Barinholtz earned a well-deserved meteoric rise during the first season of The Mindy Project. The improv actor had initially befriended Mindy Kaling over Twitter, which led to an invitation to the writer’s room on her Fox sitcom, which in turn led to Barinholtz donning the medical scrubs of Morgan Tookers, the show’s eccentric yet affable ex-con nurse. Barinholtz’s character was a highlight in the comedy's freshman year, which should come as little surprise to anyone who knows him for his work as a former cast member on MADtv, or more recently as Eastbound & Down’s Ivan Drago-inspired Russian [...]
