A 'Muppet Show' Reboot Is in the Works at ABC

Kermit and friends might be heading back to television. TV Line reports that ABC is currently developing a reboot of The Muppet Show, which originally ran from 1976-1981. The Big Bang Theory co-creator Bill Prady is writing and executive producing a pilot presentation for the network later this month with the working title Muppets 2015. Details are slim, and so far only a brief summary has been released: "The Muppets excitedly gather at ABC for a meeting about the new Muppet Show. However, the show will not move forward unless Miss Piggy signs on." ABC last attempted to revive The Muppet Show in 1996 with Muppets Tonight, but [...]

The Original "Muppet Show" Pitch Video Is Damn Near Irresistible

Take notes, anyone hoping to someday sell a TV show of their own: this pitch video for the original Muppet Show, created and voiced by Jim Henson, is how you do it. As Slashfilm notes, this isn't exactly new, but I had never seen it so I figured you may haven't either. Its pacing and escalation is pretty much perfect, and it's no wonder that the show was indeed bought after this pitch was given. If only all shows had pitch videos like this.

A New Muppets TV Show Is Reportedly in the Works

The Muppets might be planning their television comeback. Collider recently spoke with Nicholas Stoller — who co-wrote both The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted — who said that though he's not creatively involved, there is currently a push to bring the Muppet crew back to the small screen in what sounds like a possibly live variety show format. From Collider's interview:

I know they're working on something to get them back on TV. I have no idea where it’s at, but I definitely think so. I mean, they're such rich characters, and it’s very easy to pitch on stories for them, and think of ideas for them. They [...]

The Nine Greatest Celebrity 'Muppet Show' Hosts

One of my favorite Not the Nine O'Clock News skits of all-time begins with the Not Team relaxing at home, reading their newspapers. One after another, they read something amazing in the paper — "El Salvador Is Going to Be a Second Vietnam," something about goats and artificial limbs and flamingos — but show little to no emotion. Finally one of them sees something in the paper that excites everyone: "Good Lord…there's someone I've heard of guesting on The Muppet Show."

The Muppet Show premiered in 1976, and 35 years later, many of its celebrity guest hosts have, like so many other millions from pop culture, been [...]

Watching as The Muppets Go Hollywood For the First Time

The Paley Center for Media, which has locations in both New York and LA, dedicates itself to the preservation of television and radio history. Inside their vast archives of more than 150,000 television shows, commercials, and radio programs, there are thousands of important and funny programs waiting to be rediscovered by comedy nerds like you and me. Each week, this column will highlight a new gem waiting for you at the Paley Library to quietly laugh at. (Seriously, it’s a library, so keep it down.)

At the beginning of 2014, I reflected on the past year of this column and cited a compilation of Jim Henson’s early work [...]
