Talking to Thomas Middleditch About HBO's 'Silicon Valley'

You're about to see a lot more of Thomas Middleditch in movies and TV. Middleditch got his start as an improviser and sketch actor in Chicago, where he performed at iO, Second City, and was a founding member of The Improvised Shakespeare Company, before moving to New York and then Los Angeles, where he's performed frequently at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. This year, he has both his first lead TV role  (Mike Judge's new HBO series Silicon Valley, which premiered last night) and his first lead role in a major movie (the upcoming Search Party, which he stars in alongside T.J. Miller and Adam Pally).

I recently [...]

T.J. Miller, Adam Pally, and Thomas Middleditch Are Starring in a Movie Together

Comedic actors T.J. Miller (Yogi Bear), Adam Pally (Happy Endings), and Thomas Middleditch (The Campaign) are playing the lead roles in Search Party, a big studio comedy that's set to start filming this week. The movie will mark the directorial debut of Scot Armstrong, who served as a screenwriter on Old School, Road Trip, and The Hangover Part II. Search Party follows two roommates (Miller, Pally) who go on a dangerous journey to rescue their friend Nardo (Middleditch) after he finds himself stranded and naked in Mexico. Miller will play lewd, fast-talking slob, while Pally will play his uptight sidekick. The movie was set up at Columbia two [...]

Thomas Middleditch to Play Dwight's Younger Bro

Thomas Middleditch, who recently can be seen doing a Southern accent in The Campaign has a very extensive improv background, performing at IO, Second City, and UCB, and was named one of Variety's "10 Comics to Watch" in 2011. Late last night, Middleditch was officially cast to play Jeb Schrute, Dwight's laidback younger brother, on The Office spinoff, The Farm. He's joining Majandra Delfino who was cast earlier this week as sister Fannie Schrute. Jeb has had many zany careers: worm farmer, Bigfoot hunter, successfully running a Northern California pot farm, and he once made a workout video of things you can do with a knife and [...]

Scrubs' Eliza Coupe Is a Terrible McDonalds Jingle Singer

The McDonalds jingle — you know, "ba da ba ba ba, I'm lovin' it" — is pretty straightforward. But all that means is that there's room to let loose and jam with it. At least that's what Eliza Coupe does, much to Thomas Middleditch's unhappiness.

'Silicon Valley's Skewering of the Tech Industry Feels Spot-On

A few weeks ago, South by Southwest offered an advance screening of the first two episodes of Mike Judge's new sitcom, Silicon Valley. It was shown as part of the festival's Episodic section, a new addition this year. Janet Pierson, Head of SXSW Film, stated the decision came after seeing how well the premiere of Lena Dunham’s Girls did in 2012, and she viewed it as a way to broaden the festival’s offerings — and stay vital — at a time when TV is offering so much interesting work. Judging from the reaction of the 600-plus film and tech nerds piled into the Austin Convention Center's Vimeo Theater, SXSW was [...]

T.J. Miller and Thomas Middleditch Cast in Mike Judge's New HBO Show

Comedians T.J. Miller and Thomas Middleditch have been cast in Mike Judge's new HBO show Silicon Valley, Deadline reports. The series is co-created by Judge and his King of the Hill/Goode Family cohorts John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky, and Judge will direct the pilot. If the show makes it to past the pilot stage and to air, it will be the first project Mike Judge has released since the Jason Bateman movie Extract in 2009 (which also starred T.J. Miller). Silicon Valley is a dark comedy "set in the high tech gold rush of modern Silicon Valley, where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable [...]

The Rise and Fall and Fall and Fall of Hipster Bashing

Let’s get the eye rolling out of the way. We all know hipsters are the worst because they’ve been defined as such since the turn of the millennium when the term was reintroduced. They are all smug and unkempt and sheep-like and neighborhood-ruiners and privileged (if not over-privileged) and jerks and smelly-heads and dum-dums and HIPSTERS. They deserve to be made fun of as much as—if not more than—anybody else. But just because they’re an easy target it doesn’t mean their mocking must be effortless. Over the last four years or so, what was once a rich terrain for satire has been mired by laziness and a singular dependence [...]

HBO Orders Mike Judge's Silicon Valley Comedy to Series

HBO has ordered a new show from King of the Hill and Office Space mastermind Mike Judge. Deadline reports that the pay cable network has given a series order to a comedy Judge co-created with John Altschuler and Dave Krisnky (King of the Hill, The Goode Family) that was previously titled Silicon Valley. The show follows a bunch of people working in the tech industry and stars an impressive ensemble of up-and-comers including T.J. Miller, Thomas Middleditch, Josh Brener, Lindsey Broad,Christopher Evan Welch, Amanda Crew, Angela Trimbur, Zach Woods, and Kumail Nanjiani. It's been a good day for The Office alum Zach Woods, who also has a supporting role in USA's [...]

NBC Doesn't Buy 'The Farm'; The Dwight Schrute 'Office' Spin-Off Is Dead

Rainn Wilson announced yesterday via Twitter that NBC has opted not to pick-up The Farm, the spin-off of The Office based around his character Dwight Schrute. A pilot episode was filmed, as a standalone episode of The Office that introduces Dwight's family, and the episode will still air sometime in early 2013, giving us a glimpse of what the Dwight spin-off would have looked like. This means that Rainn Wilson will be sticking around for the rest of The Office's final season, instead of leaving for his own show, which'll make for a more fulfilling finale for fans in May.

The Farm was created by Paul Lieberstein (the [...]

Thomas Middleditch Puts The Nardo In Road To Nardo

It seems like just yesterday I was gagging with laughter at his portrayal of a tiny gelato-loving Italian boy on the UCB stage. Variety reports that Thomas Middleditch joins Road to Nardo; Middleditch will play the title character, who must be rescued by TJ Miller and company after finding himself naked and stranded in Mexico.
