HBO has given a series order to The Brink, a dark comedy that stars Jack Black and Tim Robbins, Deadline reports. Weeds writer Roberto Benabib and brother Kim created the show, and Jay Roach (Meet the Parents, Austin Powers), directed the pilot, which was ordered in the fall. The Brink follows three characters involved in a geopolitical crisis: the Secretary of State (Robbins), a low-level military officer (Black), and a navy fighter pilot (Pablo Schreiber, Orange is the New Black). Aasif Mandvi, Maribeth Monroe, Geoff Pierson, Esai Morales, and Eric Ladin play supporting roles in the show, which HBO quickly ordered to series after receiving and watching the pilot yesterday.
The cast of Funny or Die's new IFC series The Spoils of Babylon keeps getting more and more impressive. The network announced today that Jessica Alba, Val Kilmer, Tim Robbins, and Michael Sheen are joining the cast, which already includes Kristen Wiig, Tobey Maguire, Haley Joel Osment, and Will Ferrell. A parody of epic '80s miniseries like The Thorn Birds and Winds of War, the six-episode show is in production now and is expected to debut in early 2014. Portlandia comes back to IFC for its second season on January 9th, and it sounds like they're keeping the bar set pretty high, at least in terms of guest stars. I mean, it's tough to argue with this list: Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, Penny Marshall, Jack McBrayer, Tim Robbins and Amber Tamblyn. And yes, Kyle MacLachlan is returning as the mayor of Portland, and of my heart.
