Amazon Bought a Comedy Pilot From Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman

Amazon Studios is launching its two new series, Alpha House and Betas, next year, but the streaming service has already ordered three new comedy pilots. The first, Mozart in the Jungle, is written by Roman Coppola and will star Jason Schwartzman and Alex Timbers. The show is based on the memoir of oboist Blair Tindall, and "is all about sex, drugs and classical music," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Another pilot, The Outlaws, "focuses on the ins and outs of a pro football team from the perspective of both the players and the back office, " and is executive produced by NFL-player-turned-TV host Michael Strahan. The third show, Transparent, stars Jeffrey Tambor and is "a darkly comedic [...]

The Subtle Brilliance of Jill Soloway's 'Transparent'

Transparent, Amazon’s foray into the Netflix-infested waters of quality internet binge watching, is deservedly the most critically-lauded show of this Fall television season (and was just renewed for a second season). Created by writer/director Jill Soloway (writer/producer Six Feet Under and The United States of Tara, writer/director Afternoon Delight, which won a directing award at Sundance in 2013), the show centers around the Pfefferman family, an affluent Jewish LA clan whose patriarch Mort (Jeffrey Tambor) comes out as transgender and begins to live as Maura in her late 60s.

Directed mostly by Soloway herself, (with the exception of three, credited to Nisha Ganatra), the direction in the show is [...]

Amazon Studios Orders 'Mozart in the Jungle' and 'Transparent' to Series

Last month, Amazon Studios added 10 new pilots to its original slate including three comedies, and Variety reports that two have officially been picked up to series following a test round with online views and feedback. Both Mozart in the Jungle (co-created by Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, and Alex Timbers) and Transparent (written and directed by Jill Soloway) will join two drama pilots (Bosch, The After) as the online studio's newest greenlit projects. For a closer look at Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent, check out our pilot reviews from February.

Jeffrey Tambor to Star in Another Amazon Pilot

Arrested Development's Jeffrey Tambor is set to star in his second pilot for Amazon's streaming service. Tambor previously starred in Onion News Empire, a critically-acclaimed pilot from The Onion that debuted with Amazon's first batch of original pilots this spring. Deadline reports that Tambor will be playing the lead in a new Amazon comedy called Transparent, written by Six Feet Under alum Jill Soloway and also starring Gaby Hoffman (Veronica Mars movie). The pilot follows Mort (Tambor) who gathers his three adult kids (Hoffman and two uncast roles) for a serious talk. They think he's going to be discussing his inheritance with them, but he reveals he's [...]

The Best Comedy Directors of 2014

As this column wraps up its first full year, I present the 1st Annual 2014 Comedy Film School Awards. These awards are determined by a voting body of one and hold all the prestige and none of the starpower of the Hollywood Film Awards. The idea is not to rank or give out superlatives, but rather use these names to discuss some of the most interesting work of 2014, why, and what this could mean for a larger comedy landscape this year and going forward.

Amazon Renews 'Transparent' for a Second Season

More Transparent is coming to Amazon. Deadline reports today that the streaming network has already renewed the Jill Soloway-created series starring Jeffrey Tambor for a second season to premiere sometime next year. Transparent has broken multiple records over at Amazon already, coming in #1 on Prime Instant Video in just a week after its 10-episode debut season premiere and also ranking as the most binge-watched series currently available on Prime Instant Video. "We are absolutely thrilled that the response to Transparent has been so positive," said Amazon Studios VP Roy Price in a statement. "Our goal is to create series that customers love, so it’s great to hear [...]

Like last year, Amazon will greenlight the pilots that get the most views and positive feedback, so we checked out the selection to get a closer look at the site's new comedy candidates and try to guess which shows have the best chance of getting picked up to series.
