Vanessa Bayer Tries to Stir Up Drama Between the Haim Sisters

Vanessa Bayer Interviews TV on the Radio About Their Garbage Music

Here's the latest installment of Above Average's web series Sound Advice with Vanessa Bayer (or "Janessa Slater"), in which she has a bizarre chat with TV on the Radio about scatting, the title of their new album, and which Beverly Hills 90210 character they each identify with the most.

Vanessa Bayer, Tilda Swinton, Mike Birbiglia, Jon Glaser, and More in Talks to Join Judd Apatow's 'Trainwreck'

There aren't a lot of Judd Apatow regulars in the director's next movie, Trainwreck. Tilda Swinton, Vanessa Bayer, Mike Birbiglia, Jon Glaser, Ezra Miller, Barkhad Abdi, and wrestler John Cena are all in negotiations to join the movie's cast, Variety reports. Trainwreck was written by and stars Comedy Central's Amy Schumer, with Bill Hader, Brie Larson, and Colin Quinn previously announced in supporting roles. Judd Apatow will direct the movie, which is the first of his films as a director that he didn't write, although he helped Schumer with the script. The movie's plotline is being kept under wraps.

Hader is the only actor in the ensemble [...]

'SNL' Review: No Escape from Miley Cyrus

After Justin Bieber hosted SNL last season, I concluded that SNL will never quite be the alternative comedy show we'd like it to be. There's no denying the show would be much funnier if producers only booked the heroes of comedy nerds to host the show, as it did last season with Louis CK and last week with Tina Fey. I've made the case several times that the show would be far better if only former cast members hosted — indeed, SNL has enough star alumni to fill a few seasons' worth of episodes.

But SNL isn't that show. The ongoing inclusion of performances by a musical guest [...]

4 Simple Ways (and 1 Slightly Less Simple Way) to Improve 'SNL'

People like to talk shit about SNL and then in turn give advice. SNL has been a perpetual motion machine for 37 years, almost exclusively overseen by one man, Lorne Michaels, and yet people always think they're doing it all wrong. "Stop repeating characters, Lorne." "Everybody hates game show and talk show sketches." "Why isn't my favorite actor/comedian/athlete hosting SNL RIGHT NOW!?" Trust me, Lorne knows all your concerns but as Bill Hader said in our recent interview: "Yeah, he knows that audience better than anybody. He's been doing it longer than any of us, so shut up and listen to him.'" That being said there are some [...]

Vanessa Bayer Gives NOFX Some Music Advice

Here's the newest installment of Vanessa Bayer's Above Average web series Sound Advice featuring punk band and "four general messes" NOFX, in which Bayer reminds the group what selling out means and suggests some more upbeat song lyrics.

Watch Vanessa Bayer Give Drake Some Advice

Here's the season two premiere of Above Average's web series Sound Advice, in which SNL's Vanessa Bayer gives Drake some advice on how to improve his image. Created by Bayer and her brother Jonah Bayer, Sound Advice follows Janessa Slater, a media coach for successful musicians, with new episodes set to drop every Wednesday for the next several weeks.

Check out the season two trailer, featuring future guests TV on the Radio, Travie McCoy, NOFX, Tegan and Sara, HAIM, Sara Bareilles, and Bastille, below:

Watch Vanessa Bayer's Epic Hip Hop Dance

Here's an SNL web exclusive featuring Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, and last week's host Lena Dunham as they patiently wait for Vanessa Bayer to show off the new dance she learned at the gym paired up with Beyonce's "Partition." They might not exactly agree that Bayer's dance skills are up to par, but that doesn't mean they can't hug it out with her for trying.

'SNL' Review: Tina Fey Introduces The New Cast

For a show that evolves constantly, SNL does a remarkable job preserving its brand. Despite the changes in the cast, the writers, and the culture it parodies, SNL will always be that live, hip, New York-centered show that puts up a few sketches at the end of the week to try to make you laugh. There's the "Live from New York…" throw line, the theme music, Don Pardo listing off the cast, the host walking out on stage, followed by that predictable pattern of live sketches, videos, musical performances, and the news segment. Critics put down this structure in favor of looser, more inventive sketch show formats, but given SNL's [...]

SNL's Christine Nangle Wants to Have Your Baby

A new web series from SNL writer Christine Nangle? Don't mind if I do! Nangle plays Dolores Santangeli, professional surrogate mother and Fritos-eater, as she navigates the tricky landscape of small business ownership. The first episode also features a great performance from SNL cast member Vanessa Bayer as a new client, whose ghost voice sounds a lot like her Miley Cyrus impression when you close your eyes. And that's not a complaint.

Watch Vanessa Bayer Make Fun of Tegan and Sara

Here's the latest episode of Vanessa Bayer's Above Average web series Sound Advice, in which she plays an image consultant for a different musician each week. Her guests this time around are Tegan and Sara, who refuse Bayer's requests to switch names for some reason.

Breaking Down Each Cast Member's Contribution to 'SNL' Season 39

With SNL's 39th season coming to a close, we're taking a look at the past season with a series of posts examining the highs, lows, and other memorable moments from the past eight months. Here, we look at the performers that make up SNL's current cast, including their overall contributions to the show, memorable roles, relative screen time, and prospects for returning next season.

SNL's 39th season was a crowded one. Record-breaking crowded, even. Six new hires, plus a seventh midseason, rose the total to 17, making the current cast the largest SNL has seen during its entire four-decade run, topping even the infamously bloated 1990-1991 season. That season only had [...]

Paul Rudd Fangirls Out in Promos for This Week's 'SNL'

Professional charming man Paul Rudd is hosting SNL this week, and he joined Vanessa Bayer for promos in which they fangirled out over One Direction, wowed us with the magic of Hollywood, and proved their excitement for the upcoming show.

Breaking Down Each Cast Member's Contribution to 'SNL' Season 38

As mentioned in yesterday's post listing our favorite moments from this season of SNL, Season 38 has been dubbed a "transitional year" by many followers of the show. After a few years of relative stability among the core cast members, stars Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg left a year ago, followed by Abby Elliott later in the summer. With the start of the new season, three performers from Chicago's improv and sketch community joined the cast: Aidy Bryant, Tim Robinson, and Cecily Strong. In the wake of Wiig's dominating presence on the show, two freshman females in particular have emerged as go-to's: Kate McKinnon, who joined the cast [...]
