What to Expect From 'SNL' Season 40

SNL returns for its 40th season this Saturday, with host Chris Pratt, musical guest Ariana Grande, and pretty much the same cast — minus a handful of people we rarely saw in sketches anyway. Following a lackluster season, Lorne Michaels is now sticking with the tools he's got, replacing five departing cast members with only one newcomer — standup Pete Davidson — and promoting writer Michael Che to co-host Weekend Update. Meanwhile, Colin Jost will remain at the desk after taking on the job last February. It's a conservative approach, compared to last year's throw-everything-against-the-wall casting strategy, which resulted in a cast so overpopulated that some remained literal faces in the crowd at the season's [...]

Vanessa Bayer Plays a Tacky Talk Show Host in Haim's New Music Video

From hosting Sound Advice to roasting screamo bands, Vanessa Bayer has long proven herself to be the perfect bridge between comedy and rock stars, but today she's taken it a step further by playing a '90s-style talk show host named Dallas Murphy in the new music video for "My Song 5" by Haim featuring A$AP Ferg. Bayer is certainly much nicer in this video than she was during Haim's guest spot on Sound Advice last month.

Vanessa Bayer Interviews TV on the Radio About Their Garbage Music

Here's the latest installment of Above Average's web series Sound Advice with Vanessa Bayer (or "Janessa Slater"), in which she has a bizarre chat with TV on the Radio about scatting, the title of their new album, and which Beverly Hills 90210 character they each identify with the most.

Vanessa Bayer, Tilda Swinton, Mike Birbiglia, Jon Glaser, and More in Talks to Join Judd Apatow's 'Trainwreck'

There aren't a lot of Judd Apatow regulars in the director's next movie, Trainwreck. Tilda Swinton, Vanessa Bayer, Mike Birbiglia, Jon Glaser, Ezra Miller, Barkhad Abdi, and wrestler John Cena are all in negotiations to join the movie's cast, Variety reports. Trainwreck was written by and stars Comedy Central's Amy Schumer, with Bill Hader, Brie Larson, and Colin Quinn previously announced in supporting roles. Judd Apatow will direct the movie, which is the first of his films as a director that he didn't write, although he helped Schumer with the script. The movie's plotline is being kept under wraps.

Hader is the only actor in the ensemble [...]

Vanessa Bayer Puts Puss n Boots in Their Place on 'Sound Advice'

"Janessa Slater" is back with an all new episode of Sound Advice with musical guest Puss n Boots, which proves to be the perfect opportunity for Slater to show off her Jewel impression with the band and share her very own Sunday Night Football song.

Vanessa Bayer Advises LeAnn Rimes to Get Into the Rap Game

Janessa Slater is back with a new installment of Above Average's web series Sound Advice, and this time she advises guest LeAnn Rimes to leave country behind for a new career as a white girl rapper. She also reveals her fascinating connection to Baby Jessica.

Vanessa Bayer Gives NOFX Some Music Advice

Watch Vanessa Bayer Give Drake Some Advice

Here's the season two premiere of Above Average's web series Sound Advice, in which SNL's Vanessa Bayer gives Drake some advice on how to improve his image. Created by Bayer and her brother Jonah Bayer, Sound Advice follows Janessa Slater, a media coach for successful musicians, with new episodes set to drop every Wednesday for the next several weeks.

Check out the season two trailer, featuring future guests TV on the Radio, Travie McCoy, NOFX, Tegan and Sara, HAIM, Sara Bareilles, and Bastille, below:

Watch Vanessa Bayer's Epic Hip Hop Dance

Here's an SNL web exclusive featuring Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, and last week's host Lena Dunham as they patiently wait for Vanessa Bayer to show off the new dance she learned at the gym paired up with Beyonce's "Partition." They might not exactly agree that Bayer's dance skills are up to par, but that doesn't mean they can't hug it out with her for trying.

Vanessa Bayer Has a Public Meltdown While Interviewing Sara Bareilles

Above Average released a new episode of Sound Advice today with Sara Bareilles, and it looks like Janessa Slater has finally found her match. Usually the guests on Sound Advice take her constant insults in stride, but Bareilles is not afraid to get edgy with some swear words if she has to.

Vanessa Bayer Roasts Her Brother's Band United Nations

If you're a fan of Vanessa Bayer's ongoing Above Average series Sound Advice, her recent appearance before a United Nations show — the band fronted by Thursday's Geoff Rickly and also featuring Bayer's brother Jonah — will wildly entertain you. According to Stereogum, Bayer used to open United Nations shows with a few good burns similar to the clip above back before she hit it big on SNL, so it's good to know the Bayer kids have made a career out of some friendly brother/sister insults.

Watch Vanessa Bayer Make Fun of Tegan and Sara

Here's the latest episode of Vanessa Bayer's Above Average web series Sound Advice, in which she plays an image consultant for a different musician each week. Her guests this time around are Tegan and Sara, who refuse Bayer's requests to switch names for some reason.

Breaking Down Each Cast Member's Contribution to 'SNL' Season 39

With SNL's 39th season coming to a close, we're taking a look at the past season with a series of posts examining the highs, lows, and other memorable moments from the past eight months. Here, we look at the performers that make up SNL's current cast, including their overall contributions to the show, memorable roles, relative screen time, and prospects for returning next season.

SNL's 39th season was a crowded one. Record-breaking crowded, even. Six new hires, plus a seventh midseason, rose the total to 17, making the current cast the largest SNL has seen during its entire four-decade run, topping even the infamously bloated 1990-1991 season. That season only had [...]
