W. Kamau Bell Says Goodbye to 'Totally Biased'

On Wednesday, FXX canceled its late night talk show, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell in the middle of its second season. The final show was aired/taped yesterday, with guest Jim Norton returning and reflecting on one of the show's most memorable moments, his debate over rape jokes with Jezebel blogger Lindy West.

Bell wrote a great piece on his blog, called "So… That Happened," addressing the cancelation. Here are some excerpts from the post:

The show was canceled. I’m not canceled. 99.999% of stand-up comics don’t get this far. If I’m really lucky, what we did onTotally Biased will be remembered long after it stops airing. Heck, my [...]

Bill Burr Responds to 'Rolling Stone' Calling Him "The New Louis C.K."

Standup Bill Burr went on Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell last night, and Bell asked him about Rolling Stone dubbing him "The New Louis C.K.," which he has a few problems with. Burr says, "I don't know why they wrote that. 'Oh, he's a balding redhead. I think they're the same thing' … I don't like how they're talking about him like he's not the king. He's the king. All I do is tell jokes. He tells jokes, puts out specials faster than I do; he's writing, acting, and directing in arguably the funniest show on TV. I just do standup in strip malls." He adds, "I don't [...]

Without 'Totally Biased', "None of This Exists Anywhere on TV"

“If we don’t put that out there, none of this exists anywhere on TV [...] And that’s when Totally Biased feels like it’s doing what it’s supposed to do."

- Buzzfeed has a great profile of W. Kamau Bell and Totally Biased's move to a nightly show.

Tracy Morgan, Jim Gaffigan, and Chris Rock Will Be 'Totally Biased's First Guests for Its Nightly Run on FXX

FX's late night talk show Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell is set to move to its new sister channel FXX, where it'll be airing four nights a week instead of one, on Wednesday, September 4th, and the show is pulling out a bunch of big name guests for the first string of nightly episodes:

Wednesday, September 4th: Jim Gaffigan Thursday, September 5th: Tracy Morgan Monday, September 9th: Chris Rock

This is the first appearance on Totally Biased for Morgan and Gaffigan, and the second as a guest for Rock, who also executive produces the show.

Talking to W. Kamau Bell About Standup, 'Totally Biased', and Diversity in Late Night

Long established on the San Francisco comedy scene, W. Kamau Bell was relatively unknown nationally when he began hosting Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell on FX in 2012. But following the internet outrage over the show’s cancellation this past November, Bell and Totally Biased received more critical attention, posthumously praising the show for its unique blend of humor and socio-political commentary.

Now, Bell is full steam ahead with his "Oh Everything!" tour, which will include doing standup at the Atlantic Ocean Comedy & Music Festival July 25-28, a comedy cruise put on by Jesse Thorn’s podcast and radio organization Maximum Fun. Before that, he’ll be in [...]

FXX Cancels 'Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell'

FXX has only been a cable network for a little over a month, but they've already made their first cancelation. Defamer reports that FXX has canceled Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, which is currently airing new episodes four nights a week in the middle of its second season. The show's final episode, with Jim Norton as the scheduled guest, is set to air tomorrow.

The Chris Rock-produced late night series premiered on FX last fall and was earning decent ratings on that network, but ratings have dropped since moving to sister channel FXX this past month. On some nights, Totally Biased has been the lowest-rated [...]

'Totally Biased's Ratings Have Dropped Off Since Moving to FXX

In early September, FX's weekly late night show, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, moved to new sister network FXX and started airing four nights a week, but Deadline observes that the show's ratings have plummeted since the transition, making it the lowest rated late night show on cable this week. On Monday night, Totally Biased had only 12,000 total viewers, and 3,000 in the 18-49 demographic. The second lowest cable late night night show in the 18-49 audience was Pete Holmes Show, which had 245,000.

Totally Biased was earning decent and stable ratings while airing weekly on FX, but the move to the new network may be [...]

Chris Rock Talks Dave Chappelle, Arsenio, and How Unknown Black Guys Don't Get Shows on 'Totally Biased'

FXX's Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell recently transitioned to four nights a week, and here's Bell's interview with Chris Rock, who executive produces the show, last night. It's basically Chris Rock doing standup about The Butler, Arsenio, networks not giving unknown black comedians talk shows like they do for unknown white comedians, and Syria, with him talking a little about the likelihood of a Chris Rock/Dave Chappelle Watch the Throne tour at the end.

FX Wants More 'Totally Biased' and 'Brand X'

The FX network has renewed both of its new late night comedy talk shows, Brand X with Russell Brand and Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, for a 13-episode second season each, according to The NY Times' Dave Itzkoff. Brand X will be expanding from 30 minutes to one hour for the new season, but will noted quiet guy Russell Brand be able to muster up enough conversation to fill an hour every week? Time will tell.

Why We Needed 'Totally Biased'

At first glance, Totally Biased's set comes off as pedestrian. A brick wall that's too well-manicured, graffiti manufactured solely for the sake of being graffiti. It all seems like forced shorthand for "the street," like instead of a half hour of social politics, W. Kamau Bell is about to record a twelve-minute video telling middle schoolers in the late nineties not to do drugs.

But as one gets more familiar with the show, that set stops being a caricature and instead becomes something genuine. Sure, it's still far too well-lit for its own good, but over the past year or so, Bell and his cohorts took that facsimile of coolness [...]

Maria Bamford Discusses Her Parents, Mental Illness Stigma, and LA with Kamau Bell

Maria Bamford was the guest on FXX's Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell last night, and here's the full interview, in which Bamford and Bell discuss the comedy special she made with only her parents in the audience, mental illness stigma, and what living in LA is like.

Hannibal Buress Defends His Gibberish Rap Skills on 'Totally Biased'

Standup Hannibal Buress dropped by Totally Biased last night, and ending up having to defend both his gibberish raps and Tina Fey's workout routine. He also shared a clip of him in sandwich-eating action as the sidekick on The Eric Andre Show, which, as they discuss, is as different from Totally Biased as two late night talk shows can be. Although Hannibal would be brilliant as a sidekick on both, if they could work out some custody-sharing agreement.

'Totally Biased's Guy Branum Calls Out the James Franco Roast for Being Homophobic

Here's a clip from Thursday's Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, in which standup/writer Guy Branum criticizes Comedy Central's James Franco roast for being super homophobic. Branum doesn't really mention how Andy Samberg and Aziz Ansari called out the other comedians for their homophobia while on stage, but he still makes a pretty good point about the event's odd gay panic-y overtones.
