Inside Whiplash, 'Review,' and 'SNL' with Leo Allen

Two decades into his comedy career, Leo Allen is both the host of one of New York's most popular standup shows (Whiplash) and a busy writer who's worked for shows like Saturday Night Live, Jon Benjamin Has a Van (which he co-created), Comedy Bang! Bang!, and most recently, Andy Daly's Comedy Central series Review. Allen recently directed A Night at Whiplash, a concert movie version of his long-running standup showcase Whiplash, which was produced by Splitsider and features appearances from Janeane Garofalo, Eugene Mirman, Michael Che, and more. I recently interviewed Leo Allen about the right way to run a standup show, his stint on SNL, and the John McEnroe '80s comedy he's [...]

Carmen Lynch on Translating Comedy from English to Spanish and an Unexpected Career in Standup

New York-based comedian Carmen Lynch didn't come to the city planning to do standup, but she's been at it for more than a decade. She's appeared on Comedy Central's Premium Blend, as a contestant on Last Comic Standing, and recently made her second appearance on Late Show with David Letterman. The Spanish-American comedian performs primarily in English and has also translated her deadpan, personal style of comedy to audiences in Spain and Costa Rica.

You can catch Lynch performing on A Night at Whiplash, the concert movie version of the popular live standup showcase Whiplash at UCB NY that we recently released via our digital distribution label, Splitsider [...]

Janeane Garofalo on Her Influence, Bombing, and Having No Web Presence

In comedy, Janeane Garofalo is a living legend. One of the breakout stars of the alt comedy of the 1990s, she went on to an eclectic entertainment career, appearing in movies like Reality Bites and The Truth About Cats & Dogs and TV shows from The Larry Sanders Show to 24, while also becoming one of the most prominent liberal voices with a stint on radio station Air America. But she's remained devoted stand-up and New York's alt scene, which is why she was perfect inclusion for A Night at Whiplash. I got the chance to talk to her about UCB, working out material on stage, and why she's doubtful about making any [...]

The Inside Story of Whiplash, One of New York's Best and Most Influential Standup Shows

"Whiplash is like a magical kingdom where laughs run free and jelly beans are the main form of currency," says comedian Aparna Nancherla, of UCB's late night standup show. For half a decade, Whiplash has consistently proven itself as an exciting and eclectic show that stands out even in the city's buzzing comedy scene, a favorite of megastar names like Louis C.K. and Chris Rock as well as a reliable well-spring for the next big stars — the likes of Pete Holmes and Kumail Nanjiani were once regulars. It's the reason that Splitsider turned to Whiplash for our first concert film, where host Leo Allen welcomed Jared Logan, Sheng [...]

Sheng Wang on New York and San Francisco's Standup Scenes

Over a decade into his standup career, Sheng Wang has amassed a list of credits that includes Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show, and his own Comedy Central Presents special. Wang, who came up via San Francisco's comedy scene, currently resides in New York, where he plays both alt rooms and clubs. Wang is one of several comedians, alongside Janeane Garofalo, Eugene Mirman, and Michael Che, featured in A Night at Whiplash, a Splitsider-produced standup concert movie based on Leo Allen's long-running live standup showcase Whiplash. I recently had the chance to talk to Sheng Wang about his beginnings in comedy, [...]

Jared Logan on Playing a Big Weirdo on His Web Series and Doing Standup in the South

New York-based standup Jared Logan is keeping awfully busy these days. He recently recorded his debut album in Nashville, released his new web series “Don’t You Think?”, featuring guests like Chris Gethard, Leo Allen, and Nikki Glaser, back in February, and was a cast member on VH1’s Best Week Ever on top of multiple TV appearances and his own Comedy Central Half Hour special that aired last year.

You can catch Logan performing on A Night at Whiplash, the concert movie version of the popular live standup showcase Whiplash at UCB NY that we recently released via our digital distribution label, Splitsider Presents. The film also features performances from Eugene Mirman, [...]

Eugene Mirman on The Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival and WhiteHouse.Gov Petitions

Eugene Mirman is a master of incorporating his absurd humor into places you wouldn't expect to find it. Whether he's making silly WhiteHouse.gov petitions, like one in which he requested Barack Obama call the Ugandan president a "ding dong boob poopy," or coming up with amazing things for corporations to sponsor at his self-titled comedy festival, like a bouncy castle with a therapist inside, even Mirman's ancillary endeavors retains the same irreverent wittiness. So far this year, the Bob's Burgers voice actor and busy standup recorded his fifth comedy album, brought The Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival to Boston (where the mayor made "Eugene Mirman Day" an official city holiday), and did a standup [...]

Sean Patton on the Country's Thriving Local Comedy Landscape

Sean Patton is at a point in his career that every rising comic eventually reaches: expanding his act for his first one-hour special. This fall, he's independently shooting his first hour in native New Orleans, after having risen up through the NYC standup scene and TV world, with recent appearances on Inside Amy Schumer, Maron, and @midnight under his belt. Patton also recently performed on Splitsider's A Night at Whiplash, sharing the stage with the likes of Janeane Garofalo, Michael Che, Eugene Mirman, and more. I recently had the chance to interview Sean Patton, discussing his performance in the Whiplash movie, recording his first hour special, and the bustling comedy [...]

Michael Che on How Confusing Pinpointing Racism Can Be

In this clip from A Night at Whiplash, former SNL writer and newest Daily Show correspondent Michael Che talks about how hard it can be determining just what is and isn't racist. For the rest of his set and full sets by Sheng Wang, Carmen Lynch, Eugene Mirman, Janeane Garofalo, Jared Logan, and Sean Patton, check out the full movie now for five measly bucks.

Eugene Mirman Talks About the Most Awkward Time He Was Recognized in Public

Here's a clip from A Night at Whiplash in which Eugene Mirman tells a story of being recognized in Guitar Center. It gets a little awkward.

For Eugene's full set as well as sets by Sheng Wang, Carmen Lynch, Janeane Garofalo, Jared Logan, Michael Che, and Sean Patton, check out A Night at Whiplash now for only $5.
