Read a Bit of Julie Klausner's New YA Novel

The very funny Julie Klausner has a new young adult novel, Art Girls Are Easy, coming out on e-book tomorrow and in print next month, and Jezebel has an exclusive excerpt from it, which you could be reading right now instead of this sentence if you clicked on that link.

The WGA Original Screenplay Nominees Are Nearly All Comedies

WGA's big-screen announcements are out, joining the small-screen nomination list released a few weeks back. The Original Screenplay category in particular is almost totally comedy-dominated, with Bridesmaids, 50/50, Midnight in Paris and Young Adult all getting nods. And everyone knows that's the best category (screw you, Adapted and Documentary Screenplays!) The full list of relevant TV and movie nominations is below.

Patton Oswalt Explains His King of Queens Prank to Jimmy Fallon

Patton Oswalt took to Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night to promote Young Adult, but more importantly to show a fast-forwarded clip of that time he stood totally still in the background of a King of Queens scene. (The fact that the writers on that show are huge stoners explains a lot of it.) In the second part of the interview (below) Patton describes Young Adult as "the way a romantic comedy would look in real life, which is a stalker horror movie." Weird, I thought I couldn't want to see this movie any more, but now I SO DO.

Details on Jason Segel's Young Adult Novel Series 'Nightmares!' Revealed

Jason Segel revealed earlier this month that he has a series of young adult novels on the way, and now, we've learned the books' titles and what they're about. Entitled Nightmares!, the series is "an adventure story about a group of kids who realize it’s up to them to save their town from fear, which has manifested itself in the form of nightmare creatures that have slipped into the everyday world." Segel, who has previously written movies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Muppets, said in a statement, "Ultimately, it’s a story about learning that we can accomplish anything, as long as we are brave enough to try. These [...]

Patton Oswalt Tears Into the Logical Inconsistencies of "The Little Drummer Boy"

This week on Conan, it's Making Fun of Popular Christmas Carols Week, where a different guest every night deconstructs one of the carols you hear twenty times per CVS visit and berates it until it is simply too ashamed of itself to play for the remainder of the holiday season. Alright, that isn't a real theme week YET, but someday, when I have my own talk show, I will devote it entirely to bitching about Christmas songs. You'll see. You'll all see.

Charlize Theron Is a Terrifying Mean Girl in Young Adult

This red-band scene from Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman's Young Adult is short, but it's so densely packed with middle school-type trauma that it should be viewed with caution by anyone who has ever chosen to color-coordinate the little rubber bands on their braces in honor of every month's holidays, or had a terrible short haircut and slicked the top back with gel but let the bottom poof out like a panoramic mullet. Oh, god. I've entered a cave of unhappy memories triggered only by Charlize Theron's line at the end of this tiny clip. I'm probably gonna pee my pants when the whole movie comes out on Dec. [...]

Jason Segel Wrote a Series of Young Adult Novels, Out Later This Year

Jason Segel revealed yesterday that he has written a series of three young adult novels and that he hopes to have the first one released later this year. Segel spoke about the books for the first time last night at a Forgetting Sarah Marshall screening and Q&A hosted by filmmaker Jonathan Demme in Pleasantville, New York. The book series, which is currently the subject of a bidding war between publishing houses, is based on Segel's first screenplay for a kids adventure movie, which he sold to a movie studio for "super cheap" when he was 21 because he "didn't know any better." Segel bought the script back from the [...]

The Quiet, Dark Comedy of Young Adult

Young Adult is not only one of the best comedic films of the year, but one of the best films of the year. It’s about time comedic performances can be considered brilliant performances.

It’s wonderfully sublime, hilarious, dark and poignant, made possible by the perfect combination of filmmakers, writers, and actors. The plot is quite simple — a recently divorced, former popular prom queen Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) is now making a living ghostwriting a series of young adult novels. After her high school boyfriend sends her pictures of their newborn baby, Mavis decides the only time she was happy was with him, so she returns to her small [...]

Young Adult Trailer Makes Mean Charlize Theron Look Super Fun to Watch

Behold, the trailer for Young Adult, the upcoming dark comedy directed by Jason Reitman, written by Diablo Cody, and starring Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt. That group of people alone was exciting, but the trailer has me looking forward to the December 9 release date even more. Theron's lying, adultering, small-dog-having protagonist looks to be – if not exactly likable – original and funny, two traits we've come to expect from Reitman and Cody.
