Splitsider

On Gesundheit, Mr. Vonnegut

Reread most of Vonnegut's stuff this week, concluding with Timequake this evening. You articulated every disparate thought I had running through my head as I ended my re-acquaintance with Kilgore Trout. Bravo, Conor.

On Hey Readers: What Do You Want to See More of on Splitsider?

In the vein of your recent blurb about comedy podcasts being too incestuous, I could do with less coverage of them. The market on podcasts is saturated right now -- especially given that most of them last over an hour -- and often feature the same guests, who don't even regularly listen to each other's podcasts because they themselves are too busy doing real projects. I love the lengthy features, and have enjoyed their increased diversity as of late. I would not have expected to see something about Horse_ebooks on Splitsider, but I was pleased when I did. I would say that there is an appropriate amount of recaps on the site right now, but at the same time, if there's a show people want to see written about, taking on a couple more writers for them couldn't hurt. I would suggest running some sort of Survey Monkey thing asking people to check off all the shows they want to read about on here just to make sure you're not overlooking anything. I like the Web Series of the week feature, and wish that more web comedy was covered, even one-off videos. I know there's a weekly web roundup, but increasing the frequency with which you highlight funny web work would be a plus. And finally, I know it's not really in the spirit of The Awl network to do gimmicky "list" articles, but I think adding a couple more would be fun. The writers here are all intelligent and insightful, and I enjoy the debate spurred by a mildly controversial list. We don't need to turn into Cracked here (though I'm sure you'd appreciate the pageviews), but occasional lists would be welcomed.

On Ten Sitcoms You'd Be Surprised to Learn Have Fan Fiction

Wow. That Clarissa story touched me in a way I'm not especially comfortable with.

On Watch the Media-Conspiracy TV Funhouse Segment SNL Banned in 1998

Wow, I remember watching this clip back when it originally aired. Really glad Maron brought it back. I'm still not sure this sketch would be embraced the way 30 Rock is today, however. Though the comparison is apt, I feel they soften their satire by not dwelling on the corporatism jokes for too long. Rather than spending two minutes saying "All these corporations run your whole life and take all your money and are possibly giving you cancer," they make a joke about Jack being in charge of microwave oven design and rapidly move on to something else, like a Liz Lemon loneliness flashback. Yes, NBC has progressed in that they allow an entire show parody their network, but while the satire is funny, it relies on absurdity rather than harsh, unvarnished truths. Smigel's satire is incredibly dark and unflinching, which would still raise red flags on any major network today.

On Splitsider and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Have a Horrifyingly Tacky Christmas Sweater to Give You

My aunt gave me a pocket reference book because, according to her, I "always seem to know lots of stuff," which is code for talking about something other than the Packers at Thanksgiving dinner. While I do pride myself on knowing an ungodly amount of trivial knowledge, it's usually limited to easter eggs on Community or the lost roles of Jason Bateman, not the density of naval leaded brass at room temperature (8.44 g/cm3) or what to do in the case of a "sucking" chest wound (cover the wound with a dressing that air cannot pass through, and tape it down, leaving one corner loose). Additionally, at almost 1,000 pages, the only way this could be considered a "pocket" reference book is if it was being marketed exclusively to kangaroos. Still, it's better than last year's gift: A Def Leppard greatest hits CD.

On How Can We Save Community?

How about we all pledge not to watch Chelsea Handler's new show? (And yes, that includes watching it ironically, to all of you hipster hatebloggers who won't stop watching Whitney). If that show goes the Reiser Route and gets axed after a few episodes, Community will be back in no time.

On SNL Recap: Emma Stone and the Rules of Recurring Sketches

I enjoyed Technology Hump and Les Jeunes Paris the most this week, but I had a real "aha" moment when the Adele sketch started, because I was immediately reminded of this humor piece Chris Kelly wrote a few weeks ago: http://chriskelly.tumblr.com/post/12041115269/live-blogging-my-572-listens-of-adeles-someone-like Glad to see one of SNL's new writers making a mark.

On Behold The Adam Sandler Movie Matrix

I get the feeling Click and Zohan were both put in the brilliant quadrant simply because they ran out of room in the shitty quadrant. If only the Sand Man didn't have such a huge head...
