On What Is the Single Best Sitcom Episode of All Time?

It doesn't look like these have been said before. Like the others, apologies for the recentness of the episodes, although to be fair sitcoms right up to the mid eighties seemed to be designed as a whole, not episode by episode. The Simpsons: Homer vs the 18th Amendment (I would say the best episode ever kinda needs to be a Simpsons. They're just so stand alone) The Office - Threat Level Midnight Scrubs - My First Day Black Books - Fever (although you knida need to have see any other episode to, for lack of a better turn, 'get it') The Vicar of Dibley - Summer (but you may pick any one of the seasonal specials) Father Ted - Kicking Bishop Brennan up the Arse (the reason is in the title) Always Sunny - The Gang solves the Gas Crisis Coupling - The End of the Line Parks and Recreation - Telethon Welcher and Welcher: White Man's Burden One Foot in the Grave - Monday Morning Will Be Fine The IT Crowd - The Speech Futurama - The Late Phillip J Fry, or possibly The Problem with Popplers Oooh, I enjoyed that. Nothing like reliving memories to make you appreciate the form.

On Wayne & Shuster: Canadian Comedy Cornball Supergods

I am not a Canadian, and his was the first time watching W&S for any length. I dunno...it still seems pretty funny. Certainly not worthy of these words. Canadian comedy always seemed light and bookish (Codco, The Frantics, Kids in the Hall), if it was satire its with a lower case s. This Hour has 22 Minutes signiture joke was calling their prime misister a cheesy dish for instance. W and S seems to fit right into that mold I reckon. And that francis bacon joke was pretty clever....

On When Did Great Sitcoms Have Their First Great Episode?

Great article. Its odd about Parks and Rec though, because the first time I watched it was on DVD. It was shown at odd times in Australia, and I didn't have a dvr. So, yeah, I watched the first season, and re watched with commentary, over a weekend in the twilight hours

On 10 Promising TV Series That Weren’t Picked Up

Great! Just thought I'd add, I believe Reno 911 come directly out of the spare time and budget they had after Hey Neighbor was cancelled.

On Looking Back at The Carol Burnett Show

Wow...harsh. But I won't argue. I do think, however, its amiss to mention the winking at the audience was part of the fun. This show is as notorious today as featuring a cast clearly enjoying themselves as much as the audience. Their laughter was barely suppressed, and still they managed to work together in sync. The longer sketch time was as much to allow that. But yes, by today's standards its pretty slow (even the times were becoming more sock it to me), sometimes undesirably so. Also 1. Do you have to nitpick about the 30 second advert? Adverts straight to camera, today and then, were rarely so short. 2. It feels like a televised stage show, because variety shows were meant to be televised stage shows. Stephen Colbert sometimes feels like a televised stage show too, less justifiably to the format (Colbert's great, don't misconstrue) 3. This is the big one. Carol Burnett most certainly draws from a improv background. Conway alone was an improv machine. All the performances had massive, live elements of improv, more then snl (despite their more specific pedigree) and certainly more then the 30 second pitch perfect ad parody's you compared it to. But great article series!
